AT MIDNIGHT the police had a positive identification of Eddie Tirkell as the man who had conked McCord and, together with two others, kidnapped Charity. From the landlady of the Towne Avenue rooming house they had a positive identification of the same man as one of those who had shot Patrolman Petrovich and vanished with Hope. Thus a definite link between the two events was now established. But the motive behind those events were still as obscure as ever.
Eddie Tirkell’s person, his car, his room—this last located through the contents of his pockets—gave no information whatsoever about his recent activities.
