Amara had always felt a little out of place. Even in a crowded city where everyone seemed connected, she carried a quiet emptiness that no one could see. Her older brother, Adrian, had been the only person who really understood her, and the only one who made her feel whole.
That all changed one rainy evening. Adrian had gone out like any other day, promising he'd be back by dinner, but he never returned. Hours turned into days, and days turned into weeks. No one knew where he was and Amara felt like a piece of herself had been ripped away.
At first, she tried to ignore it, she told herself he must have gone somewhere far, maybe even started a new life. But the emptiness inside her only grew, a quiet ache she couldn't shake.
One night, alone in her room, she dreamed something strange. She was standing under a sky that wasn't real. A sky split in two, added cracks of light running across it.
Shadows moved just out of reach, whispering her brother's name. When she woke up, her heart was pounding, and she knew something had changed.
The emptiness wasn't just inside her anymore, something was stirring .......something that had been waiting for her all along.
Amara sat quietly on her bed staring into the darkness of her room. The dream still felt too real. Her heart was beating fast, and she could still remember the broken sky and the strange shadows moving in the distance. She rubbed her face and tried to calm herself.
It was just a dream, she whispered.
But something about it didn't feel like a dream. The room felt colder than usual. The air seemed heavy, almost like a storm was coming, even though everything outside was quiet.
Amara slowly got out of bed and walked toward the window. The city outside looked normal. Streetlights glowed softly, and a few cars moved down the road in the distance.
Everything looked the same, yet she couldn't share the strange feeling inside her chest. Her eyes moved around the room until they landed on something she hadn't noticed before. A small wooden box sat on the table beside her bed.
Amara frowned.
"That wasn't there before...." she murmured.
She slowly walked closer. The box looked old, its surface covered in thin scratches and faded markings. It almost looked like it had been hidden away for years. Her heart began to beat faster again. Carefully, she reached out and opened it and she immediately recognized it.
It belonged to Adrian. Her hands trembled slightly as she picked it up. She remembered this notebook very well. Adrian used to carry it everywhere, always writing strange notes or drawing things inside it.
She slowly opened the notebook.
Most of the pages were filled with drawings, strange symbols, rough sketches of landscapes, and shapes that didn't make much sense. Some pages showed tall mountains under a broken sky. Others showed dark figures standing in places that looked nothing like the real world.
Amara turned another page.
Her breath caught in her throat. There was a drawing of the exact same sky she had seen in her dream: the cracked sky and the glowing lines spreading across it like broken glass.
Her heart began to pound. "This can't be real,"she said quietly.
She kept flipping through the pages, her hands shaking more with each one. Then she reached a page with writing on it, she leaned closer and read the message.
"The rift is real. If anything happens to me, it means I was right. The crack between the world is opening again."
Amara felt a cold chill run down her spine, her eyes moved to the next line.
"And somehow........ Amara is connected to it." She steps back slowly, her mind spinning.
"Connected........to what?" she whispered.
Suddenly, the light in her room flickered, the air in her room seemed to grow colder.
Amara turned slowly toward the window for just a brief moment. She thought she saw something strange in the reflection of the glass.
A shadow.
Not her own.
It moved quickly and disappeared before she could focus on it.
Amara's heart began racing again.
Hello? She called nervously.
The room was silent, but deep inside, she could feel it. Something had begun the exact thing that happened the night Adrian disappeared.
And now...........it was coming back.
