Chapter 5

A Second Chance The tension in the air was palpable as Nicole arrived at the secluded cabin Eric had chosen for their so-called "business retreat." Nestled deep within the woods, the cabin exuded a rustic charm, with its wooden beams and stone fireplace, but the environment did little to ease the storm brewing inside her. She stepped out of her car, her heels crunching against the gravel, and took a deep breath. This was a mistake, she thought. She should have declined Eric’s invitation. The door swung open before she could knock, revealing Eric, looking uncharacteristically casual in a gray sweater and dark jeans. His sharp features softened when he saw her, but Nicole didn’t miss the flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. “You came,” he said, his voice low. “Let’s just get this over with,” she replied, brushing past him into the cabin. The warmth inside was a stark contrast to the frosty tension between them. A fire crackled in the hearth, and the scent of cedar lingered in the air. Nicole set her bag down and crossed her arms, refusing to let her guard down. “You said this was about the project,” she started, her tone clipped. “It is,” Eric said, closing the door behind him. “But it’s also about us.” Nicole’s heart skipped a beat, but she quickly masked her reaction. “There is no ‘us,’ Eric. Not anymore.” Eric sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Nicole, I know I screwed up. I know I let my ego and my insecurities ruin what we had. But I’m trying to make things right.” Nicole let out a bitter laugh. “And dragging me out here is your idea of making things right? You can’t just control the narrative, Eric. That’s not how this works.” Eric stepped closer, his expression earnest. “I’m not trying to control anything. I’m trying to show you that I’m not the same man I was when we fell apart.” Nicole’s eyes narrowed. “Prove it.” The Weight of Regret Eric gestured toward the small dining table set with two plates and a bottle of wine. “Sit with me. Let’s talk.” Nicole hesitated, her instincts urging her to leave, but curiosity—and perhaps a flicker of hope—held her in place. Reluctantly, she sat across from him, her posture rigid. Eric poured the wine and handed her a glass. “Do you remember the first time we did this? Just you and me, no boardrooms, no cameras?” Nicole’s lips pressed into a thin line. “That was a long time ago.” “But it mattered,” Eric said, his voice soft. “And it still matters to me.” Nicole studied him, searching for any sign of manipulation or deceit. Instead, she saw a man stripped of his usual bravado, his vulnerability laid bare. It was disarming, but she refused to let herself be swayed so easily. “Why now, Eric?” she asked, her voice steady. “Why are you suddenly so desperate to fix things?” He sighed, leaning back in his chair. “Because losing you was the biggest mistake of my life. And I’ve spent every day since trying to figure out how to be the man you deserve.” Nicole’s throat tightened, but she forced herself to stay composed. “You say that now, but how do I know you won’t go back to treating me like a trophy wife the moment I let my guard down?” Eric flinched, the words hitting him like a slap. “I don’t deserve your trust yet. I know that. But I’m willing to do whatever it takes to earn it.” A Vulnerable Confession They fell into a heavy silence, the crackling of the fire the only sound between them. Nicole stared into her glass, her emotions a tangled mess. She wanted to believe him, but the scars of their past were still fresh. “Do you remember why I left?” she asked suddenly, her voice barely above a whisper. Eric nodded. “You felt like I didn’t respect your independence. Like I only cared about what you could do for me.” Tears pricked the corners of Nicole’s eyes, but she blinked them away. “I felt like I was losing myself, Eric. Like I was drowning in your shadow.” Eric leaned forward, his gaze intense. “I see that now. And I hate myself for not seeing it sooner. But I want you to know that I’ve changed. I’m not here to take anything from you, Nicole. I just want to stand by your side.” Nicole’s heart ached at his words, but doubt still lingered. “And what about the merger? What about everything we’ve built together? Is that just a means to an end for you?” Eric shook his head. “The merger was never about control. It was about creating something we could both be proud of. But if it’s standing in the way of us, I’ll step back. I’ll let you take the lead.” Nicole’s breath caught. “You’d really do that?” “Yes,” Eric said without hesitation. “Because I believe in you, Nicole. More than I’ve ever believed in myself.” The Call That Changes Everything Just as Nicole was about to respond, Eric’s phone buzzed on the table. He glanced at the screen, his expression darkening. “I have to take this,” he said, standing up. Nicole nodded, watching as he stepped into the next room. She could hear his muffled voice, tense and urgent, but the words were unclear. Curiosity got the better of her, and she moved closer to the door, straining to hear. “…this expose could ruin everything,” Eric was saying. “I don’t care about the business—just make sure Nicole isn’t dragged into it.” Nicole’s stomach dropped. She stepped back as Eric ended the call and returned to the room, his face unreadable. “What was that about?” she asked, crossing her arms. Eric hesitated. “It’s nothing for you to worry about.” Nicole’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t lie to me, Eric.” He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Someone leaked information about us. The media is running with it, spinning it into some story about me using you for a comeback.” Nicole’s blood ran cold. “So, this is what you wanted all along? To use me as your redemption arc?” Eric’s eyes widened in shock. “Nicole, no. That’s not—” “Save it,” she snapped, grabbing her coat. “I should have known better than to trust you.” Eric reached for her arm, his grip firm but gentle. “Nicole, please. You have to believe me.” But Nicole pulled away, her eyes filled with anger and pain. “I can’t do this, Eric. Not again.” She stormed out of the cabin, leaving Eric standing in the doorway, his heart sinking as he watched her disappear into the night. As Nicole drives away, her mind races with conflicting emotions. Can she truly trust Eric, or is she setting herself up for heartbreak once more? Meanwhile, Eric is left grappling with how to prove his innocence and win back the woman he loves before external forces tear them apart forever.
