Chapter 2

Unwanted Proximity Nicole Stanton stood at the base of the Grand Regency Tower, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floors as she approached the elevator. She adjusted her blazer, forcing herself to focus. This was a business meeting, and Eric Ferguson’s presence would not distract her. Not today. The elevator doors slid open, and there he was. Eric stood inside, looking every bit the polished businessman in a suit that seemed tailor-made for him. His hands were casually tucked into his pockets, and his confident posture made it clear he was in control of the situation. Nicole's stomach tightened as the doors closed behind her, trapping them in the small, suffocating space. “Nicole,” he said, his voice smooth and casual, but the faint smirk on his face betrayed his amusement. “Eric,” she replied curtly, her gaze fixed on the elevator buttons. She refused to let him see how much his presence unsettled her. The silence between them grew heavy, but it didn't take long for Eric to break it. “I assume you’re prepared for the meeting,” he said, his tone light but with an underlying challenge. Nicole shot him a sideways glance. “Why wouldn’t I be? I’ve been leading Stanton Enterprises for the past three years. I know my business.” Eric chuckled softly, his eyes never leaving her. “I never doubted you knew your numbers, Nicole. I just hope you’re ready for the questions.” Her chest tightened, but she didn’t let it show. Was he warning her—or taunting her? The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open. She stepped out quickly, eager to escape the tension, but Eric was right behind her. The Boardroom Showdown The conference room was filled with executives from both companies, each representing their stakes in the merger. Nicole took her seat at the head of the table, opposite Eric. The room was filled with murmurs of anticipation, but Nicole remained calm. Her confidence radiated as she launched into her presentation, detailing the proposed terms with poise and precision. As she spoke, Eric’s eyes never left her. He leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable, but there was an intensity in his gaze that made her feel exposed. His presence felt like a weight, pulling at her, reminding her of everything they had been through. But she pushed it aside and focused on the task at hand. When she concluded, one of Eric’s partners, a middle-aged man named Mr. Dawson, leaned forward. “Ms. Stanton, your plan sounds idealistic,” he said, his tone dripping with skepticism. “But what happens if the market shifts? Your projections assume a seamless integration, but we all know that’s rarely the case.” Nicole’s mind raced, but she didn’t let the doubt creep in. This was her moment to prove herself. She opened her mouth to respond, but before she could, Eric spoke up. “Dawson, I think you’re underestimating Ms. Stanton’s abilities,” he said, his voice firm. “She’s accounted for potential setbacks. If you’d reviewed the data thoroughly, you’d see that her contingency plans are solid.” The room fell silent. Nicole blinked, caught off guard by Eric’s unexpected defense. She wasn’t sure how to react. In the past, Eric had never been one to defend her—not unless it benefited him. But now, here he was, standing up for her in front of everyone. His words disarmed her, stirring emotions she wasn’t ready to confront. She recovered quickly, addressing Dawson’s concerns with a calm, measured explanation. By the time she finished, it was clear that she had won the room’s respect. But as she spoke, a part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that Eric’s support was more than just professional. A Moment of Truth As the meeting wrapped up and everyone began to filter out of the room, Nicole gathered her materials, eager to escape the tension that still lingered between her and Eric. But before she could leave, she felt a familiar presence behind her. “Nicole,” Eric said, his voice softer now, almost admiring. “You handled that well.” Nicole turned to face him, her expression hardening. “I didn’t need you to defend me in there, Eric. I’m perfectly capable of standing up for myself.” “I know you are,” he said, stepping closer, his voice low. “But that doesn’t mean I’ll stand by and let someone undermine you.” His words hit her harder than she expected. They stirred something inside her—something she wasn’t ready to confront. She looked away, trying to regain her composure, but her heart was racing. “Why are you really here, Eric?” she asked, her voice quieter now, betraying a hint of vulnerability. Eric hesitated for a moment, and when he spoke, his answer was simple. “I’m here for the merger.” But the way his eyes softened as he spoke suggested there was more to his presence than business. Nicole swallowed hard, struggling to make sense of the emotions swirling inside her. She couldn’t afford to let herself get distracted—not by him, not by the past. But the pull between them was undeniable, and it left her feeling helpless. The Turning Point Later that evening, Nicole found herself in the company lounge, going over the day’s events. The city lights sparkled outside, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing within her. She couldn’t escape the memory of Eric’s words, nor the way his gaze had lingered on her during the meeting. Her phone buzzed on the table, and she glanced at the screen. A message from her assistant, confirming the next meeting, but that wasn’t what caught her attention. The door to the lounge opened, and Eric entered, his presence commanding as always. He approached her, two glasses of wine in hand. “Truce?” he offered, holding out a glass. Nicole hesitated, staring at the glass for a moment before accepting. “For tonight,” she said, her voice cautious but resigned. They sat in silence for a while, the tension between them palpable. Nicole could feel his eyes on her, but she refused to meet his gaze. Instead, she took a sip of the wine, focusing on the taste as a way to distract herself from the storm of emotions threatening to overwhelm her. “You’ve changed,” Eric said finally, his voice breaking the quiet. “You’re more confident, more... unstoppable.” Nicole glanced at him, her brow furrowing. “What’s that supposed to mean?” Eric’s expression softened, and he leaned back in his chair. “I always knew you were brilliant, Nicole, but now you’re more than that. You’ve become someone who doesn’t let anything stand in her way.” Nicole’s heart skipped a beat, and she felt a sharp pang of anger. “Independent?” she finished for him, her tone sharper than she intended. Eric winced. “That’s not what I meant.” Nicole sighed, setting her glass down. “Let’s not do this, Eric. Whatever this is.” But Eric wasn’t ready to let it go. “Why not? You’re clearly still angry with me. But I think you know as well as I do that there’s unfinished business between us.” Before Nicole could respond, her phone buzzed again, pulling her attention away from him. A breaking news alert flashed on the screen, with a photo of her and Eric from earlier that day, accompanied by a headline: “Stanton-Ferguson Merger or Romantic Reunion? Inside the Billion-Dollar Deal Between Exes.” Nicole’s blood ran cold. The article suggested that their professional collaboration was nothing more than a cover for rekindling their romance. She skimmed the article quickly, her fingers trembling as she read. It seemed the media had made up their own story—and it was one that could jeopardize everything she had worked for. Her phone buzzed again, this time with a text from an unknown number. The message was short but chilling: “Be careful who you trust. Not everyone has your best interests at heart.” Nicole’s heart raced as she looked up at Eric, her mind spinning. Was this just the work of meddling journalists, or was someone deliberately trying to sabotage her? And more importantly, was Eric involved? Her growing confidence was suddenly overshadowed by the looming threat of media scrutiny. And Eric’s protective nature, though appreciated, only seemed to complicate their already fragile dynamic. Nicole’s confidence was tested as the media turned its gaze on her, and Eric’s defense of her in the boardroom only seemed to add more fuel to the fire. The leaked article and the ominous warning were just the beginning of the emotional and professional turmoil that was about to unfold. What was once a clear path to success was now clouded by doubt, suspicion, and a connection to Eric that neither of them was ready to confront.
