She stood still with her eyes wide and shaky as the shock of the situation remained evident in them. Her shoulders were still tense, like she was bracing herself for what would happen next but that was impossible.

I stepped forward and pulled her into my arms. She didn’t resist. She sank into me like she was finally letting go of all the tension. “Breathe,” I whispered. “You're okay. I got you.”
Her body was trembling. Not violently, but enough to make me want to murder Laurie and Amanda. And I meant that. If she hadn’t stopped me, there would have been blood.
She nodded slowly against my chest. Her fists were still clenched.
