Three

I arrived at work, awake and ready to push through another day. I greeted my employees enthusiastically. They would never know what my night had been like, that would be like letting them in. From there, I dove into reports, customer service issues, numbers, all the routine Monday tasks. The day was a blur. When it was over, I was glad. Tonight, Peter was working an overnight shift at the plant, so I didn’t have to worry about going home to him. Crystal was coming over, we’d planned to hang and drink. I picked up pizza and drove home- she was bringing the wine as normal. The doorbell rang and I sprung up off the couch. After opening the door, I saw the same big brown curls, green eyes and round face that’d gone through so much with me. “Eva!” Crystal shouted, embracing me. We hardly saw each other anymore. I missed her. “I missed you too. Come in! Pizza is here.” “I brought the wine, and a little something extra.” She shook the bottle in one hand, and her tarot cards in the other. I rolled my eyes, skeptical as always of Crystal’s mysticism. “Don’t you dare disrespect the power of the cards.” She dramatically joked. “But first, let’s eat.” Over dinner, we talked about everything- except for Peter. Crystal hated Peter with a passion. She told me all about her new job and her two darling girls. She talked about her husband- Blake. I envied her life so much for it’s happiness, but couldn’t be too angry. I was happy for Crystal. “Eva, how are you? I’ve talked for what feels like hours.” “I’m fine.” I smiled weakly, drinking some more. “Fine, ok. Well, if you won’t tell me the cards will.” She smiled. She slid the deck out of it’s case and shuffled. “There’s nothing to tell. Honestly.” I shrugged off.
