Upon catching sight of the explosives strapped to the robbers, Jade's delicate face contorted with fear, her eyes flashing with terror.
She knew that if Tom detonated those devices, the entire bank lobby would be reduced to rubble. At such close quarters, she was unlikely to escape, and the innocent civilians within would surely perish alongside her.
Jade hesitated. Although she had pledged her life to the duty of a police officer, the presence of so many civilians in the bank made her hesitant to fire indiscriminately.
"Bang!"
As she stood frozen in thought, Tom suddenly struck, punching her right hand and sending her gun flying.
He then aimed his own weapon at her head, finger tightening on the trigger.
Suddenly, a burly man standing at the entrance spoke up. "Boss, wait! Don't shoot!"
"Duran, this woman has some skills. Keeping her around is a liability!" Tom shouted with dissatisfaction, shooting a disapproving glance at Duran.
Duran shook his head, explaining. "Boss, we're surrounded by the police. To escape, we need a valuable hostage. Look at her clothes, she's clearly someone important. With her as our hostage, the police won't dare to act rashly!"
Duran, evidently a man of strategy, had immediately grasped the idea of using a hostage to their advantage.
Tom laughed heartily. "Duran, you truly are our brain. Excellent idea. Grab her and let's get out of here!"
Praising Duran, Tom pulled out a rope and bound Jade tightly.
With his gun still trained on her head, he began to make his way out.
Watching Tom and his accomplices lead Jade away, Ethan sighed.
Though he found Jade's recklessness frustrating, he couldn't abandon her to her fate.
Regardless of her status, her unwavering sense of justice warranted his intervention.
However, the moment was not yet ripe for a rescue.
Ethan hid himself in the shadows, like a hawk waiting to strike, his gaze fixed on his prey.
He would wait for the perfect opportunity to deliver a decisive blow.
Outside, a policeman exclaimed, "Deputy sheriff, does that hostage the robbers are dragging out look like our Captain?"
Upon seeing Tom escort Jade out, the deputy sheriff in charge of the operation took a closer look and immediately paled, his hands trembling slightly.'Was that Miss Eve?'
The deputy sheriff knew Jade's identity well. If anything happened to her, the entire Imperial City would tremble in its aftermath.
Panicking, he grabbed a megaphone and shouted at the robbers. "I warn you, release our Captain immediately, or you'll regret it!"
Ethan slapped his forehead, muttering a curse under his breath. "Fool!"
The robbers had only judged Jade's importance based on her expensive attire, unaware of her true identity.
Now, thanks to that idiotic policeman, they knew exactly who she was, making her an even more valuable hostage.
Ethan couldn't help but feel surprised. He had never expected Jade, who appeared to be in her early twenties, to be a police captain.
Whether she had earned that position through merit or family connections remained a mystery.
As expected, the robbers' faces lit up upon hearing the deputy sheriff's words.
Duran exclaimed excitedly. "Boss, this chick is actually a captain! With her as our hostage, we'll definitely make it out of here."
Tom nodded in agreement, his face alight with joy. "Yes, now we're safe!"
Jade glared at the deputy sheriff in frustration, feeling an intense urge to kick him.
Tom, gun still aimed at Jade's head, threatened. "You policemen, listen carefully. Prepare a car for us immediately, or I'll kill her!"
The deputy sheriff quickly replied. "Alright, don't hurt our Captain. I'll get you a car right away."
Seeing the murderous intent in Tom's eyes, the deputy sheriff panicked and immediately complied with the robbers' demands.
He couldn't afford to anger the Eve family if anything happened to Jade.
Shortly thereafter, a SUV was driven up, and Tom and his three accomplices bundled Jade and a bag of money into it, speeding away.
The deputy sheriff pulled out his walkie-talkie and announced. "Attention all units, the robbers are on a white SUV heading towards Queen Street. Intercept them, but do not alarm them. Captain Eve is still in their hands! Repeat! Captain Eve is in their possession!"
Instantly, the notified units erupted into action.
The entire metropolis was thrown into a state of high alert, as everyone scrambled to track the white SUV.
Meanwhile, Ethan quietly exited the bank and made his way to a motorcycle parked by the roadside.
Turning the key, Ethan set off in pursuit of the SUV.
Having emerged rather late, Ethan had only caught a vague mention of Queen Street from the deputy sheriff's announcement.
So, he set off in the direction of Queen Street.
Upon arriving at Queen Street, Ethan found an abandoned SUV surrounded by numerous police officers.
From their conversations, Ethan learned that the four robbers were extremely cautious and had received assistance from someone in the shadows.
The robbers had switched vehicles halfway through their escape, leaving behind this empty SUV.
Queen Street intersected at four points, each leading in a different direction, some towards the city center, others towards the outskirts.
After careful analysis, the police unanimously concluded that the robbers had fled towards the outskirts, and all vehicles were dispatched in that direction.
Ethan crouched down, examining the tire tracks on the ground. A faint smile curled at the corners of his lips. "No, the robbers didn't go to the outskirts. They must have doubled back into the city. A game of cat and mouse, huh? Interesting!"
