Chapter 63

740 Words
Zared's face turned cold. "Shut up!" Even though Ethan hadn't looked at him once, Zared felt that Ethan was targeting him. Zared looked at Ellison. "Ellison, it seems like your dad knows him. Did he tell you who he is?" Ellison's face was pale, and fear flashed in his eyes. "I... I don't know. But... my dad told me seriously that if Mr. Lee finds any fault with me again, he will literally break my legs." Zared's eyes narrowed sharply. For Lawson to say something so ruthless, who was Ethan exactly to make Lawson so afraid? A classmate asked, "Zared, should we listen to Mr. Lee?" Zared sighed. "Let me think. For now, let's clean up the classroom..." *** As Ethan left school, his phone rang. It was Sophia calling. Sophia asked, "Ethan, how did the job interview go?" She sounded anxious and a bit uneasy. Ethan smiled. "It went very well. I've officially started the job." Sophia's voice turned cheerful instantly. "That's great! Now that we both have a job, I believe our future will be better." Sophia continued, "By the way, Ethan, do you need to teach today?" Ethan shook his head. "Today was just my first day, so the school only arranged a simple introduction to the students. I'm on my way home now." Sophia sighed in relief. "That's perfect. I'm kinda busy today, and I might need to work overtime. Could you pick up July from school? You two can have dinner by yourselves." Ethan replied, "Sure, make sure you rest and don't overwork." When he got home, it started drizzling outside. With the only car taken by Sophia, Ethan put on a raincoat, got on the old motorcycle, and headed to kindergarten. At the kindergarten gate, luxury cars were parked everywhere waiting to pick up their children. Ethan spotted July quickly and rode over on the old motorcycle. July ran into Ethan's arms excitedly. "Daddy!" Ethan hugged his daughter and wrapped her in a raincoat. "July, what do you want for dinner tonight?" July said eagerly, "Daddy, I want fried chicken and cola. Mom always says it is junk food and won't let me have it. Can you take me?" Ethan nodded indulgently, "Hold on tight, July. We're going to the fried chicken store now!" July laughed happily all the way. After a hearty meal, Ethan and July returned home. Around nine in the evening, Sophia walked in, looking exhausted. She threw her bag down and collapsed on the couch. Seeing his wife in this state, Ethan got up and asked, "Sophia, what happened?" Sophia turned around, her eyes suddenly red, and her voice choked with sobs. "Ethan, what should I do?" After joining the Rising Group, Sophia showed her impressive business skills, landing a big deal within three days. The Deputy General Manager, Jabbar Cyrus, thought highly of her abilities and promoted her to Business Director. However, this move incited the jealousy of another Deputy General Manager, Adolph Barker. The General Manager of Rising Group was about to step down, and the next General Manager would be chosen between the two Deputy General Managers. The Business Department was company's golden department. Whoever secured its support would increase their chances of becoming the General Manager significantly. Having been outmaneuvered by Jabbar, Adolph wasn't willing to fall behind. He appointed his daughter, Dilanne Barker, as Deputy Director of the Business Department. Using his extensive network and financial influence, Adolph managed to isolate Sophia, reducing her to a powerless figurehead despite her title. After recounting the situation, Sophia's eyes were red with endless grievance. "I know this is a battle between the two Deputy General Managers, and I'm just a pawn in their game." Sophia said with frustration, "But I earned the Director position with my abilities. I worked three days and nights for that deal. Why must my hard work be sacrificed to their conflict? Is this fair to me?" Feeling Sophia's deep sense of grievance, Ethan sighed. Her experience was all too common in the workplace. Sometimes, having ability and working hard couldn't guarantee rewards. Thinking of this, Ethan's eyes flashed with determination suddenly. "They think they can push you out and undermine your achievements. They're too naive." Ordinary people might have to accept such situations. But they were dealing with Sophia, and behind her stood Ethan! Sophia shook her head in despair. "This time, I really couldn't fight them. So, could you help me?"
