Chapter 12: The Lurker
The streets were empty and damp, rain refracting into amber halos beneath the streetlights. Ava Black clutched the blood sample tightly, feeling its faint pulsating warmth—a signal entwined with the memories of the deceased and a warning of danger. Every heartbeat throbbed like a hammer against her nerves, reminding her that unknown threats lay ahead.
Jack Morrison walked beside her, flashlight beams slicing through dark corners, illuminating the slick pavement on either side. The air smelled of rain mixed with soil, carrying an indistinct tension. He spoke softly, “Ava, I checked nearby surveillance—someone has repeatedly appeared in the areas you’re investigating. Their movements are unusual.”
Ava’s brow furrowed slightly. She closed her eyes, letting the blood sample in her palm connect with her senses, detecting the lurker’s presence. Images flickered in her mind: a stranger in a black trench coat and a baseball cap, moving with agile, almost eerie steps. He paused at street corners, scanning his surroundings as if monitoring a target.
“He’s skilled,” Ava said quietly, a barely perceptible tremor in her voice. “Not an ordinary tail… more like a trained operative lying in wait.”
Jack rested a hand lightly on her shoulder, eyes firm. “Whoever he is, we need the upper hand first. Can you see which direction he’s heading?”
Ava opened her eyes slowly, visualizing the lurker’s trajectory—moving quickly and covertly through a narrow alley. The faint glow from the blood sample seemed to guide her, hinting that this person might hold secrets the Chief Judge has yet to reveal.
The two of them pursued him through the alley. Abandoned shops lined the street, neon lights reflecting in puddles like ghostly figures. Each footstep was swallowed by the rain, leaving only their heartbeats echoing clearly.
“Watch out—there might be traps,” Ava warned softly, her intuition telling her the lurker had already set obstacles in the shadows.
Sure enough, a trash can shifted slightly, rain trickling from its lid, making a faint noise. The lurker sensed their approach and accelerated, disappearing into the night.
“He’s gone!” Jack shouted, flashlight sweeping the area, revealing only wet ground and scattered paper.
Ava smiled faintly, the blood sample’s glow pulsing in her hand. She closed her eyes, letting her ability guide her. A mental image appeared: the lurker’s hiding place—a derelict warehouse, dimly lit, filled with old crates and broken planks. She could sense the chill and the dangerous aura in the air.
“The warehouse is about ten meters ahead,” Ava whispered. “We must be careful; he could be armed.”
Jack nodded. The pair approached silently. The slightly open door seemed to invite them into an unknown game. Ava’s heartbeat quickened; the blood sample’s warning pulsed—danger was gathering.
Inside, darkness enveloped them like a massive arm. Ava raised her hand slightly, flashlight beam cutting through the shadows, revealing the lurker’s outline. He stood deep inside the warehouse, back turned, holding a laptop with its screen glowing blue.
“What’s he doing?” Jack whispered.
Ava exhaled softly, synchronizing her senses with the blood sample. In her mind’s eye, images flickered: the lurker analyzing case files, entering complex code, seemingly tracking Ava’s investigation and attempting to manipulate the flow of evidence.
“He’s not just lurking; he’s actively interfering with our investigation,” Ava said, her voice firm. “We must stop him, or we’ll never get the truth.”
Jack moved closer, gripping his flashlight and protective tools. Ava felt the faint glow in the blood sample resonate with the lurker’s presence, as if warning her—this person was extremely dangerous, yet left a flaw.
“We’ll split up,” Ava whispered, exchanging a glance with Jack. “You draw his attention; I’ll control the situation from the side.”
Jack nodded, their movements seamless and swift. Jack made a small noise, catching the lurker’s attention. His eyes sharpened like blades. Ava silently approached, using the blood sample to sense his psychological rhythm and predict his next move.
Just as the lurker reached to raise an alarm, Ava leapt, grabbing the laptop. The blood sample’s glow flickered, revealing passwords and hidden case details in her mind. The lurker cried out as Jack restrained his arm, preventing further action.
“Got him!” Jack whispered, breathing heavily.
Ava exhaled slowly, holding the blood sample, her mind flooding with all the information the lurker had manipulated: he was an accomplice of the Chief Judge, using technical means to interfere with the investigation and possibly holding new murder plans.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Ava whispered, her voice cold. “The more clues we uncover, the closer the danger comes.”
Jack looked at her, concern and warmth in his eyes. “No matter how dangerous it is, I’ll be by your side.”
Ava smiled faintly, feeling a surge of warmth. Amid darkness and danger, someone stood with her—this trust and connection became the strength that propelled her forward.
The rain continued to fall; the streets remained quiet and damp. Yet in the shadows, a greater crisis was brewing. Hidden eyes continued to fixate on them, while the blood sample’s faint glow seemed to warn: the real challenge has only just begun.
