Chapter 6

ELAINE I woke up the next day feeling a bit tired. I wasn't able to catch a good sleep last night. Guess the drastic transformation of my life in such a short while was taking a toll on me. I stood up from my bed and wobbled to the bathroom to brush my teeth. At least I could be grateful for my new abode. The air here was nice. The floor and furniture were so sleek, it almost felt like I was in a palace. Almost. After brushing my teeth, I headed out of my room still in my baby pink pajamas. Barefooted, I walked down the stairs to the kitchen to make myself a quick breakfast. Usually, by this time of the day, Mom would have robbed me of sleep and together we would be on our way to our bar. She owned the bar and I was a waitress there. Lucky for me though, she paid me. Everything just seemed…strange. As I sat on the stool in the kitchen and took a bite from my toast, I sighed. Then it hit me and I glanced around with furrowed eyebrows. Where's Jeremy? As much as I relished the morning without his ever so annoying presence looming around, it was certainly strange that he hadn't come to pester me yet. It didn't even feel as though he was in the house at all. “Jeremy!” I called, my voice travelling around the silent mansion. No response. I stepped out of the kitchen and went to the living room. No one was there. I decided to head upstairs to his bedroom. That is where he had to be, right? My bare foot slapped the wooden stairs repeatedly until I was on the upper floor. I tried down the corridor until I got to the entrance of his room and paused. “Jeremy?” I knocked. Yet again, there was no response. “I swear, Jeremy, if this is some kind of joke, I promise you won't find it funny at all!” I said but there was still no response. I released a sigh. Where in the world was he? I decided to open the door and step in. There was no sign of him in there. Gazing at his king sized bedroom, I was tempted to walk in. I swept my gaze around, taking the posters of famous musicians and footballers on the walls. Typical guy’s room. I should have left then but something in me seemed to be holding my feet from walking out. So I walked towards his massive wardrobe. I have to admit, it was beautiful to behold. My fingers traced the sleek black lacquer surface before I opened it. There was a long array of hung shirts in there. And I mean really long! “How many clothes does he wear at once?” I asked, marvelled. Now I had a feeling Mom had gotten married into a wealthy family. I went through a few of Jeremy's clothes -which were mostly t-shirts and pants. Then I went to his shoe rack. So many… Suddenly, my senses returned to me. I shouldn't be here. I was about to shut the wardrobe where I felt a raised wood on the side. I raised my brows. What was that? Curiosity got the better of me and I pulled the wood out. As it came out, it was revealed to be a drawer. A drawer? Why would a drawer be hidden within a wardrobe? Was Jeremy keeping something in there? I moved his clothes aside and looked into the drawer. There was a brown envelope lying within. My eyebrows creased and my curiosity piqued. Then I reached for the envelope but I heard a series of approaching footsteps which made me jolt. I cussed under my breath as I hastily slammed the wardrobe shut and scrambled around on the spot for a while, trying to find where to hide. Goddess, he mustn't see me here! As adrenaline rushed through my veins and the sound of footsteps got louder, I bent down and slid under the massive bed. That should be good. I soon heard the door creaking open and footsteps coming in. I held my breath in my lungs so he wouldn't hear me. I tried to steady my heartbeat which was racing against my ribcage. Sweat poured down my face and chest, pooling the ground below me. I saw, from under the bed, his legs as he walked by. I heard him open his wardrobe and I hoped that he didn't notice any recent activity there. Soon, I saw his legs walking by the bed again. He must be going out! Please let it be so! But he stopped! Holy crap, he stopped! I held my breath extra long and waited for him to leave but he didn't. Why wasn't he leaving? My chest was already heating up, I needed air. Just as it felt like I was going to pass out, his legs moved from the spot and I heard the door being shut. I released a long breath and coughed. Goddess, I almost passed out. I'm never going to come in here again. I waited for a while as I caught my breath. Then I rolled out from underneath the bed and stood up. “What are you doing?” Goosebumps enveloped my skin as I jumped in raw fear. I felt my heart jump in my chest as I fell on my buttocks. From the bed, I saw Jeremy looking down at me with a cocky smile on his lips. Wha…when did he… “Why did you do that?” I asked in a high pitched tone. He stood up from the bed and stood over me. “You should have thought of the consequences when you came sneaking into my room.” I sprang to my feet, my nose flaring in fury. “That doesn't give you the right to startle me!” I maintained defiantly, my arms wrapping over my chest. Jeremy scoffed. “What were you doing here, stepsister?” He asked with a step closer to me. It suddenly felt like the room was suffocating. There was a little ring to his tone when he said “stepsister”. Or was it just my imagination? I decided not to feel intimidated and tilted my head up defiantly. “Why can't I be in your room? Aren't we siblings?” I asked, my tone daring. “Siblings?” He huffed, “I don't remember having s*x is a thing siblings do together.” I scrunch my face and recoiled in disgust. “Ugh! Why would you say that?” I asked in irritation as I felt my face burn. I was mortified. A smirk appeared on Jeremy's lips. “Why not? Don't tell me I'm the only one who remembers us having…” Before he could complete his words, I slapped my hand over his lips, shutting him up. “Keep quiet!” I ordered. He went mute but his eyes never left mine. I watched, captivatingly, as his eyebrows furrowed on me. Silence hung between us for a while, an unspoken spell keeping us frozen. I was the first to snap to my senses. I withdrew my hand from his mouth and stepped back. Again, I felt my face heating up. “I should go.” I mumbled, stepping past him to leave. But he bounced in my way and I bumped into him. A gasp escaped my lips and before I could step away from him, his hands were holding my wrists together. I stiffened, my heart skipping. Jeremy stared down at me with a dangerous gaze, one that pierced directly into my soul and stole my breath. “Careful Elaine. My room is off limits!” He said in a dangerously low tone. The huskiness of it made my skin crawl. A shiver slithered down my spine and I couldn't help but shudder. He released me and gestured at the door with a warm smile. With a racing heartbeat, I walked, with wob bled steps, out of his room. As I walked down the corridor, I couldn't wonder what was in that file. And why it seemed like he was hiding something from me.
