Chase's POV:
Things between Bri and me are getting complicated. I don't think she wants to see me anymore. I might spend a lot of time with her, but that is because I like it. I like her company. We understand each other well. I don't know why she wants me away from her. She didn't say exactly this, but that's how it sounded to me. I should probably give her some space. If that will make her feel better, I will do it. No matter, I don't want it. For the first time, I feel good being around a girl. Dad has tried to set me up several times, but it never worked. He can't tell me with who I have to go out. That should be my decision. Also, I will be dating her, not him. I already know which girl I want, but I'm unsure if she wants the same. I don't think I will ever be brave enough to tell her. I might have kissed her, but that was. I did it so she could let me stay with her. Honestly, that felt good. I wanted to do it for quite a while but never had the chance. The other problem is that I haven't told my parents about her. If I want to be with Bri, I can't hide her. She has never been to my parent's house, and I don't plan to invite her. I know what will happen there. The girl doesn't need to hear all the things my dad will tell her. He will be mad for sure. It's not like I understand him. There is nothing wrong with her. Bri is perfect the way she is. I like her that way. She might not have much, but I don't care. I'm not with her because of her money. Neither because of the things she has. I like her because of the way she looks. Also, it's because of the person she is. I want to take care of her one day. It's not like I don't do it daily. I hope that I will always be able to do it.
It's another day of hiding. Dad keeps asking me about the girl from the gala night. I thought he would give up, but no. I guess he didn't forget about her. I wish he did. Well, I don't plan on inviting her at home. I mean, at my parent's house. Mom might like her, but not my dad. I don't want Bri to feel uncomfortable or unwanted. After all, there is a reason why she is hiding herself. Mostly, she is hiding her state. I don't see anything wrong with it. Maybe it's better if I distract my dad from her.
Currently, I am in my office. Annie came to leave me the mail and the new documents. I wish I could do something different. At least I found a new friend. Let's be honest. Bri will never be my friend. Even if I try, I will fail. This girl was something more the day I saw her. Now, I can't stop thinking about her. Mostly, I feel bad for the way she lives. I can offer her more, but she won't accept. I don't know what else to do. I was checking the mail when Annie came in.
- Did something happen?
- This came for you now. It says to don't open unless you are Chase Wilson.
- Now you got me interested.
- I will leave it on your desk. Call me if you need something.
- Ok, thanks, Annie.
- You're welcome.
I took my scissors and opened the package. It was a small swan. I have received many things before, but nothing like this. I checked the box and found a note. Let's see who got me this.
Dear Chase, I don't know what has been happening with you lately but thank you for coming to see me. I'm sorry that I said I wanted you to stay away. I didn't mean it. People started talking, and I was afraid you might get in trouble. I never meant to hurt you. I can't buy expensive things, but I hope you will take this small gift. I know what you will say, but you did many things for me. Let me at least give you that. It's not much, but I know you don't care about the price of a present. I hope to see you soon. From your, Bri.
I should've known it was from her. That is the only person who puts thoughts in their gifts. I keep receiving expensive things that I don't need. This might be small, but it means a lot. I took the letter and put it in the first drawer. This one has a lock.
On the lunch break, I took Annie with me. It's boring eating alone. I can go to see Bri, but I know she won't like it. I have to find some time for her. My parents invited me for dinner. I'm sure they want something. Dad was smiling, which is a big sign.
- Thank you for taking me, Chase.
- No problem.
- Can I know what was there?
- Curious?
- I'm a girl. That should say enough. - she said, and I laughed
- Ok, ok. It was a little swan.
- A swan? Who will give you that?
- That will be a mystery.
- Why?
- There was no note.
- Really? I didn't see an address on the box either. Maybe someone came to the building.
- It's possible. Where did you get this?
- I was on the first floor, and the security gave it to me.
- I see. Thanks.
- Hey, are you ok?
- Yes, I'm fine.
- Are you sure?
- I have dinner with my parents.
- Ok, but why is this that bad?
- My dad keeps asking about the girl I took to the gala night.
- That was a long time ago.
- He likes to know all the people who I talk with.
- Why?
- They might embarrass me, which means he will be embarrassed too.
- Don't you think that is too much?
- Say this to him, not to me.
- I see.
After lunch, Annie and I went back to work. I kept looking at the swan for a while. I might take it home. I unlocked my drawer and pulled out the letter. She gave me this. I better start working.
Around 5 pm, I finished everything I had to do today. I went home for a quick shower. Then I went to the grocery store to get something. When I arrived, my mom was already at the door. It looks like they have been waiting for me. I'm starting to get nervous. Hopefully, nothing will happen. I'm not in the mood to argue with them. Mostly, I mean my dad.
- Hello. Again.
- Hey, honey. Come in.
- Thanks. I bought a small cake.
- You can leave it in the kitchen.
- Hello. How is my future boss?
- Dad, we have talked about it.
- I know. Let's eat now.
All of us sat around the table. Something is going on here. Dad is never so good to me. This means he wants something from me. I think I know what he wants.
- Say it.
- To say what?
- Dad, I know why I am here.
- Won't you finally tell me?
- Why do you care? It was just a girl. You won't see her again.
- But I want to know who she was.
- I met her through some friends. You don't need to know everything.
- Yes, I do. Now I know you are lying. Tell me.
- Fine, but promise not to get mad.
- What?
- Dad.
- Ok, ok. I won't get mad.
- I met Bri on the street.
- Son, there are many people on the streets every day.
- No, he lives there.
- What? You brought a homeless girl to my gala night!
- Maybe.
- Chase, are you serious? - my mom asked
- Yes.
- I knew I shouldn't trust you. I had to pick the girl.
- Dad.
- No! If someone finds out about this, you will get fired.
- What? Why?
- I won't let you embarrass me. What were you thinking?
- You didn't even know that she was homeless.
- Yes, but it wasn't visible she could fit in. I noticed that.
- So what? Bri didn't do anything.
- You will never see her again. Understood?
- What?
- You won't see her anymore.
- I won't do that.
- If you don't want us to argue, do as I say.
- No. This time, I will do what I want.
- Excuse me?
- I'm tired of doing everything for you. Can't I do something for myself? She is a good girl.
- SHE IS HOMELESS!
- SO WHAT?
- If I see you with her again, you two will be in trouble.
- That's not fair. I'm an adult. I can do whatever I want.
- Me too.
- Dad, you are not right.
- I hope you won't miss her. - he said and left
- I will talk with him. - my mom said
- No, leave him. I have to go.
- Will you see her?
- Yes.
- Do you love her?
- Yes.
- Good luck. If you want to keep her, you have to fight.
- I won't give up. Neither will lose.
- I haven't seen you like that in a while.
- Thank her for this.
- I might do it.
I went home for a while and then to search for Bri. She still sleeps in that caravan. I will find her a better place. When I arrived, I saw the door open. She must be here. I came closer and knocked on the door. Soon, she showed up.
- Chase.
- Hey. Can I come in?
- Yes, sure.
- I brought sweets.
- You didn't have to buy them, but thanks.
- Oh, I didn't. I took them from home.
- Good. How are you?
- I have been worse.
- Something has happened. Will you share it with me?
- I don't want to talk about this now.
- Please. I want to help you.
- You already did.
- How?
- I received your gift.
- You did?
- Yes. Can I know why you got me this?
- Take it as a thank-you gift.
- Thank you for what?
- For everything that you did for me. Now tell me what happened.
- I told my dad everything.
- He got mad.
- Yes. I can't tell anyone about you, or I will be fired.
- What? Chase, he can't do that.
- Yes, he can. He is the boss, not me.
- I told you it was a bad idea.
- No, it wasn't. I like spending time with you, and nothing will change that.
- Chase.
- No, Bri. I don't care what he says. I'll come here whenever I want.
- Can I know why? I don't want something to happen to you. - she said and looked at me
- I will be fine. Also, this is my decision.
- I know, but.
- No, but. It's final.
- Ok, ok. Don't get mad.
- I'm sorry.
- It's ok.
- Look, um, about what happened.
- It will be our secret. Sweet secret. - she said and kissed my cheek
- Really? You don't mind?
- How can I? It's Chase Wilson. It's not like I knew how you were.
- Maybe that was better.
- Everything will be fine.
- I hope so.
- You will see. All you have to do is to be patient. Also, I am here.
- I know.
- I won't let you be in a bad mood.
- You have proved to me that since the beginning.
- I won't stop doing it.
- I don't know what I would've done without you.
- Be without me. - she said, chuckling
- But I don't want to.
- What?
- I should've told you this a long time ago. The thing is that I didn't know how.
- What do you mean?
- I can't stay away from you. Even if I want to do it, that will be impossible. I don't know what you did, but it makes me want to keep coming here. That's why I wanted to see you often. I'm sorry, but I.
- You what?
- I.
- Chase, is everything ok?
- I love you.
- You what?
- I'm sorry, but I can't keep denying it.
- So it's true?
- Yes, it is. It took me time to admit to myself.
- Why me?
- I don't know. Falling for someone is not a choice. Staying with that person is a choice.
- What is your choice?
- To stay here. Will you let me?
- I think I have to because I love you too. - she said, smiling
- Really?
- Yes.
I didn't say anything and kissed her. Now, I can do it as much as I want. I don't care what my dad thinks about her. Nothing and no one will stop me from seeing her. I want to be with Bri. I'll do everything possible to achieve it, even if this means I have to fight with my dad about it. He can't tell me what to do. I'm not a little kid anymore. Falling for her was unexpected, but staying was not. It's time for me to do something for myself. I got tired of doing everything he wanted. If he tries to get close to her, I will step in. Dad can't scare me. I hope that he won't do anything.
