Beneath the Surface

The penthouse was both a haven and a trap. Returning here felt like stepping back into a world I couldn’t fully escape—a life with Elias that was as intoxicating as it was dangerous. I’d told myself I could handle it, that I could compartmentalize the things I knew about him and the feelings I had for him. But every moment with him made that line blur. “Are you okay?” Elias asked, setting my suitcase down beside the door. I nodded, though my heart was pounding. “It feels strange to be back here.” He stepped closer, his gaze softening as he cupped my face. “I know. But it’s safer here. For now, this is where you need to be.” Safe. It was a strange word coming from him. Elias, who could make me feel like I was the only person in the world who mattered, was also the reason danger seemed to follow me like a shadow. “I’ll unpack later,” I said, pulling away. “There’s something I need to talk to you about.” Elias frowned slightly but gestured toward the couch. “All right. I’m listening.” I hesitated, my hands twisting in my lap. This was the moment I’d dreaded, the confession I’d kept buried for too long. “I know about the hidden room in your bedroom,” I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper. Elias stilled, his expression unreadable. “What do you mean?” “I found it,” I admitted, meeting his gaze. “The night you went out of town. I went inside, and I saw… everything. The cameras. The files. The blood.” His jaw tightened, but he didn’t look away. “You should have told me.” “I didn’t know how,” I said, my voice trembling. “I didn’t know what it meant or how you’d react. And then I saw you… kill someone.” The room fell silent, the weight of my words pressing down on us. Elias stood, running a hand through his hair as he paced the room. “When?” he asked, his voice low. “That night,” I said. “I saw it on the camera feed.” He stopped, turning to face me. His expression was a mix of anger, regret, and something I couldn’t quite place. “Zahra, I didn’t want you to see that. I’ve tried to keep you away from that part of my life.” “I know,” I said, my voice barely steady. “But I did see it. And I’ve been carrying it ever since.” Elias crossed the room in two long strides, kneeling in front of me and taking my hands in his. “Are you afraid of me?” The question hung in the air, heavy with implications. “I don’t know,” I admitted. “I’m afraid of what this means—what being with you means. The danger, the secrets… Elias, I don’t know if I’m strong enough for this.” “You are,” he said firmly, his grip on my hands tightening. “And you’ll never have to face it alone. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe.” I wanted to believe him. I wanted to trust that his words were enough to protect me from the darkness that seemed to follow him. But the fear lingered, gnawing at the edges of my resolve. Dinner that evening was quiet but comforting in its simplicity. Elias cooked—a ritual I’d come to love over the weeks we’d spent at the penthouse. Watching him in the kitchen was like seeing a different side of him, a glimpse of the man he might have been in another life. “Are you nervous?” he asked, handing me a glass of wine as we sat at the table. “About what?” “About tonight.” His lips curved into a small, knowing smile. I felt my cheeks flush. Tonight. Eight o’clock. The routine we’d fallen into before the chaos—a ritual that was as intimate as it was addictive. Elias’ s*x room was a space where we shed everything else, where the world outside ceased to exist. “A little,” I admitted, sipping my wine. He leaned closer, his eyes darkening. “You don’t have to be. You know I’ll take care of you.” By the time the clock struck eight, the anticipation had built to an almost unbearable level. I made my way to the room, my steps faltering slightly as I pushed the door open. Elias was already there, waiting for me. The soft lighting bathed him in a warm glow, highlighting the sharp angles of his face and the raw intensity in his eyes. “You’re late,” he said, his voice teasing but laced with something darker. “Only by a minute,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. He crossed the room, his movements deliberate and fluid, like a predator closing in on its prey. “A minute too long.” His hands found my waist, pulling me close as his lips captured mine. The kiss was slow and deep, a promise of what was to come. “You’ve been on my mind all day,” he murmured against my lips. “Have I?” He chuckled, the sound low and sinful. “You know you have.” His hands moved to the buttons of my blouse, his touch firm but unhurried. Each piece of clothing he removed felt like shedding a layer of the fear and uncertainty that had been weighing me down. When I was bare before him, he stepped back, his gaze raking over me with a hunger that made my pulse quicken. “You’re beautiful,” he said, his voice rough with emotion. I reached for him, tugging his shirt over his head and letting my fingers trace the scars and muscles that told the story of his life. “So are you.” He led me to the bed, his touch igniting a fire that consumed us both. The rest of the world faded away as we lost ourselves in each other, our movements a silent conversation that spoke of need, desire, and something far deeper. Elias was careful and precise, his hands and mouth worshipping every inch of me. He knew exactly how to unravel me, leaving me trembling and breathless beneath him. “You’re mine,” he whispered, his voice thick with possession. “Yes,” I breathed, the word spilling from my lips without hesitation. And in that moment, nothing else mattered. Not the danger, not the secrets, not the fear. There was only him, and the way he made me feel whole in a way I never thought possible. When we finally came undone, it was like shattering and rebuilding all at once. Elias held me close, his breathing heavy and his arms a safe haven. “Whatever happens,” he said softly, pressing a kiss to my temple, “we’ll face it together.” I nodded, my body still trembling in his embrace. For now, I let myself believe him. For now, I let myself feel.
