You’re Mine

Work has been relentless over the past few weeks. The hours blurred together, the routine pulling me under like a tide. And yet, every day at 8 PM, an invisible alarm would go off in my head. Elias’s penthouse. It had become a routine—one I hated but, shamefully, had started to anticipate. The way he looked at me, the control he wielded so effortlessly, was both intoxicating and infuriating. “Hey,” a voice called out, snapping me out of my thoughts. I looked up to see Kareem standing in front of my desk, his broad smile instantly lifting my mood. “How are you doing?” he asked, leaning casually against the edge of my desk. “I’m okay,” I replied, returning his grin. “I see you got the job in the end.” “Yes, I did,” I said, my voice faltering slightly. His presence was disarming in a way that made me nervous. “Any plans after work today?” he asked, his tone light but curious. “None that I know of,” I joked, trying to keep it casual. “Good. I’ll pick you up here at 5 PM,” he said confidently, flashing another smile before stepping into Elias’s office. I stared after him, a mix of excitement and apprehension bubbling in my chest. Dinner with Kareem felt like a breath of fresh air—a chance to escape my increasingly stifling routine. By 5 PM, Kareem was waiting at my desk, his charm as effortless as ever. I quickly packed up my things, eager to leave for the evening. As we stepped into the elevator together, I felt a small thrill of excitement. When we reached the car park, Kareem walked me to my car. I opened the door to put my bag inside, but before I could climb in, he stopped me. “No, you’re coming with me,” he said, his smile warm and inviting. I hesitated for a moment before locking my car and following him to his. Just as we were walking toward his sleek black sedan, Elias appeared, his calm demeanor making my heart race. “Heading home?” Kareem asked, his tone casual. “Yeah, need some rest,” Elias replied, his voice steady and unreadable. His hazel eyes flicked to me for the briefest moment before returning to Kareem. “You?” Elias asked. “Heading to grab dinner. She’s coming along,” Kareem said, gesturing toward me. Elias didn’t respond immediately. His gaze lingered on me for a moment longer than necessary before he nodded and got into his car. My stomach twisted as I watched him drive away, his calm exterior masking something far more dangerous. Kareem and I arrived at a cozy yet upscale restaurant downtown. The warm lights and soft hum of conversation created a relaxing atmosphere. As we were seated at a corner table, Kareem smiled at me. “It’s lovely here. Great food, too,” he said. The evening passed in a blur of laughter and lighthearted conversation. Kareem was easy to talk to, his humor and warmth a stark contrast to the tension I’d grown used to with Elias. For a moment, I allowed myself to enjoy the simplicity of it—being seen, being heard. When the dinner ended, Kareem drove me back to the office building to pick up my car. “I had a great time,” he said, his smile softening. “Let’s do this again soon.” “I’d like that,” I admitted, feeling lighter than I had in weeks. We said our goodbyes, and I drove back to the Estrella Doran. But as I stepped into my room, a chill ran down my spine. The lights were off, which was odd. I flipped the switch, and my breath caught. Elias was sitting in the corner, his silhouette sharp against the dim light from the window. His eyes bore into me, unreadable and unrelenting. “You don’t like your job?” he asked, his voice low but laced with menace. I froze, confusion washing over me. “What?” “Answer me!” he barked, making me flinch. “I—I do,” I stammered, my heart pounding in my chest. “Where have you been?” His tone was sharp, each word a dagger. “I went out for dinner and then came back here,” I said, my voice trembling. “You’re mine,” he hissed, standing abruptly. “Do you understand? Mine!” The intensity of his words left me shaken. He stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him. My knees buckled as I sank onto the bed, my mind racing. “What does this mean for my job? Will he fire me? Is this what happened to his last assistant?” The questions spiraled in my head, each one heavier than the last. I thought of my family—their comfort, their safety—and knew I couldn’t risk losing this job. Determined to make amends, I quickly showered and changed into the nicest lingerie I owned, tying a robe around myself before heading to his personal room. My heart pounded as I raised my hand to knock, but I froze when I heard voices from inside. “Leave my family out of this!” Elias’s voice thundered, the anger in it making my blood run cold. There was a moment of silence before he spoke again, his tone darker, deadlier. “I told you to handle it. Why am I still getting calls from a man who should’ve been dead hours ago?” I gasped, too loudly, and clapped a hand over my mouth. My pulse raced, but I couldn’t tear myself away from the door. “If you want to join the cartel, you have to prove you’re worthy of it. Kill him before midnight, or I’ll kill you myself!” His voice was ice-cold, each word cutting like a blade. A loud bang followed—his phone, I realized, meeting the floor. I stumbled back, my breathing shallow and panicked. What had I just heard? Who was he talking about? What cartel? I heard his footsteps approaching the door. I fled back to my room, locking the door behind me. My hands shook as I leaned against the wall, my mind spinning. Elias wasn’t just dangerous—he was lethal. The door knob twisted. It was Elias. I cling tightly to the sheets in desperation for them to protect me from him. I had locked the door behind me so I was safe for one more night. “What could he be talking about? Who does he want dead? What cartel is he joining?” The questions buzzed in my head, refusing to let me rest. I lay awake all night, staring at the ceiling, the weight of what I’d heard pressing down on me. I was in too deep, and I didn’t know how to get out.
