Starved Animals

The truce might have stopped them from coming to blows but the dislike between them was crystal clear, especially between Lucifer and Azazel. They had made a good distance from the clearing by now and where lucky enough not to run into anymore hounds. Yet a howl in a distant always put them on edge. Serving to remind them why they had the truce in the first place. Luna sat on Lucifer’s shoulder in her Phoenix form and shuddered, “What are they even doing around the forest? Why won’t they just go away?” Rose answered for her, “One of the processes of breaking a Brutum is to starve them to the point of insanity. This doesn’t kill them as immortals have no need to feed but will turn them aggressive. But after much time, they will do whatever they can to feed…..even be willing to follow commands…” Luna frowned at this, “That’s cruel. How long had they been starve?” “Five winters. They are probably trying to make up for all the times they were deprived of food. This forest will be consumed wholly in about a few days at best.” True to her words, a huge deer like animal was running as fast as it could. The immortals quickly hid themselves as a hell hound went chasing after the poor creature with a sadistic glee. “Abominations.”  Some of the angels muttered under their breath. This didn’t go unnoticed by Lucifer, nor did he miss how Luna flinched slightly. They had no idea how long they had been walking. The sun was covered with dense clouds, snow and trees, so telling the time was nearly impossible. The immortals didn’t show it but this was actually taking a toll. They were all suffering from Maya exhaustion* from the fight last night. This was also the very reason why the angels weren’t able to just fly away with their wings. They needed to rest in order to gain back some of their strength. On their way, Lucifer saw a huge hollow log and inspected it. It was dry and hid them from prying eyes. He turned back to his unlikely crew and announced, “Settle up, Gentlemen. We’re camping here.” The rest were surprised by this but they couldn’t say they didn’t agree. A breather was what they all could really use right now but Azazel had other ideas, “Do you think we are mad? Stopping when we could be attacked at any moment?” “Your men are tired as are my companions. We need rest.” Calmly answered Lucifer. “They are my men. You don’t decide what’s best for them!” Azazel spoke rather heatedly. “Fine, feel free to carry on with your men without us. I wouldn’t mind.” Was all Lucifer said before helping Rose and Luna climb into the hollow log. Leaving Azazel shell shocked. Then anger followed. ‘That filthy traitor, How dare he!’ Azazel had already made his mind that he would carry on but Gabriel made his way into the log along with the other angels. “Where do you think you’re going?” “He is right sir, the men need rest…” reasoned Gabriel making Azazel even more furious. “You don’t make decisions here, Private.” Gabriel glared at this and Azazel didn’t like this, “What are you looking at Boy? Don’t you know disrespecting a higher ranked officer is punishable offence?” “I know...But if that’s what it takes to get us out of here alive. So be it. We have better chance of Surviving if we stick together…” Azazel fumed at this as his face was red with anger, “Wait till the higher ups hear of this…” “Like I give a damn… ” Lucifer smirked at the interaction.  ‘Just like his mother.’ The angels were sitting on the far corner of the log, away from Lucifer’s team. Luna had started a small bonfire in the log and Rose sat beside her, absorbing the warmth of fire while it last. Lucifer had gone out saying he had some task he needed to do and since immortals didn’t really answers the nature’s call, this confused and worried the two females. Luna stared into the flame as it flickered about the wind making it seem like it was dancing to the rhythm of the breeze, while her thoughts were clouded with the events that had occurred till now, especially the Brutums. Still bothered at what the other immortals viewed her kind as. And worst was she was slowly starting to believe they were right. But she remembered what Lucifer told her back at the ship, it made things much easier. Hearing someone approach, they were ready to attack but a voice called, “Easy there, it’s me.” It was Lucifer, causing them to ease up a bit. But what he held above his shoulder was what confused them. It was some sort of big freshly killed rodent. He dropped that thing on the floor and sat down. Turning to Rose, he asked, “You have a knife with you?” she shook her head. Lucifer found it ironic that an assassin didn’t have a knife on her. Turning to the angels he asked, “Does any of you gentlemen have a knife with you?” The request seemed very strange, most not willing to comply. Hesitantly an angel slipped out his dagger and threw towards Lucifer. Uttering an audible ‘Thanks’; he did what the immortals weren’t expecting. He cut the rodent’s abdomen open and removed the insides of the creature. Baffled, Rose shakily asked, “L-Lord Lucifer…what are you doing?” “Isn’t it obvious….”, Lucifer spoke casually as he now proceeded to remove its fur and wash the dead creature and the dagger with the snow, “Its breakfast.” He used some sticks to suspend the meat above the fire and watched as the flames slowly cooked the flesh. Once done, he cut out a fair size of the meat and held it before Luna. The red-head gulped the smell of the cooked meat, making her realize just how hungry she was. Then again, she remembered how the Brutums devoured the angel, making her feel sick on her stomach. She refused. Lucifer frowned; he knew what her problem was. Poor girl felt that if she ate, she would be no better than those Hounds. He sighed. Taking the dagger, he cut another chunk of meat from the cooked rodent and bit into it. This shocked everybody. Lucifer chewed as any mortal would do and finally swallowed like any mortal. The log was silent as this happened as the immortals witnessed the eldest of them break all their laws and eat food like it was as normal as anything else. “A little salt would have done wonders.” He spoke and ate again. Rose was astonished as the Angels muttered in disgust and looked the other way, refusing to witness such blasphemy. Luna looked at Lucifer with equal shock. Lucifer looked at her and spoke with his mouth still full, “What? Eat it while it’s hot…gets cold very soon around here.” Luna couldn’t help but smile. She too took a piece and ate as well. “You’re right…. Salt would’ve been great.” Lucifer smirked at this and Luna laughed softly as both ate, while exchanging some words. This intrigued the rest. It seem so strange, an angel who was friend with a Brutum. It confused Gabriel; the bond the two shared was deep. Deeper than anything he had seen before. It became clear to him why Lucifer ate the meat. He did it so the Phoenix wouldn’t feel left out. If she was a freak then he would be a freak like her himself. This raised so many questions in the young angel’s mind, all left unanswered. But one thing was sure, ‘Lucifer, you’re something else.’ The little snack had done wonders to Luna as she felt herself far more energetic than before. The unstably allied party had left the log and continued their journey. She was wrapped around Lucifer’s neck in her Phoenix form which was unusually flexible and allowed her to be an unlikely scarf. They reached a huge cliff overlooking the massive and awesome landscape of Siraya, littered with steep and sharp mountains, trenches, Glaciers and occasional pocket forests covered with snow. It was slowly getting brighter and brighter and the Sirayan sun peeked from between the spiky mountains heralding the arrival of a new day. Luna was mesmerized by the view as it was the first sun rise she witnessed in Siraya. Just as beautiful as that of other many worlds she had roamed with Lucifer. However the said man was not able to appreciate the beauty of nature as Lucifer was discussing with Azazel where they should head. And discussing was putting it lightly. “Do you have any idea where you are going?” spat the Angel. Lucifer rolled his eyes at ever grumpy leader. Probably still sore from the beating he gave. “No.” he answered bluntly. “Oh just perfect…” Rose came over and spoke, “If my speculations are correct we had located a Vorken city south-east of our ship’s main route. That was four hours before the crash. I suggest we head there for now?” “And lead an entire hoard of Hounds straight into the heart of a likely populated area? I don’t think I really wanna arrange a buffet for the hoard, thank you very much.” Countered Lucifer. Rose bit her lips at this, he was right. Mortal weapons would be ineffective against those immortal beasts and the beast will likely devour the entire population of the city which would not be good. Azazel was silent all this time. Finally he spoke, “But if we go there without attracting attention to our selves then we can reach there without the Hounds on out tail.” “And how do we do that?” asked Lucifer, not liking the ominous tone Azazel spoke with. Without a warning Azazel caught one of his men. Before anyone could do anything Azazel used a blade to chop off the Angel’s legs, much to their horror. But that wasn’t all, the Dark haired angel then threw his dismembered comrade down the cliff. The legless angel screamed all the way down as his figure got lost in the mists down below. Soon howls followed and a shrill cry for mercy before everything became deadly silent. Gabriel was beyond infuriated, he would’ve attacked the leader had not his comrades held him down, yet it was clear that they too were not happy with what Azazel did either, just didn’t have the guts to voice it. “The Dogs will be busy scouring the area down the cliff, giving us enough time to slip away. I suggest we move fast….Even a mortal’s city will be better than this place.” he spoke coldly and moved in the direction of the city. Lucifer spoke nothing and followed the Angel. The rest of the crew followed eventually, all missed and evil glint in Azazel’s eyes. True to his words, no hound bothered the group rest of the way. The murder of their comrade was still fresh in the mind of the Angels, yet when the mortal city was visible in a distance all of them let out a cry of joy. The city was at least another ten miles away but even from this distance they could make out that the city was way big. Perhaps one of the most peculiar cities they had seen as the city was built on a huge arch. The Arch seemed like natural formation at the side of an ocean and seemed fragile, yet the Vorkans had made their city on top of it. And that’s not all; half of the city seemed to be hanging down the arch. With so much load it was a miracle how the arch managed to not collapse under city’s sheer weight. ‘Must be because of the many thick metallic supports which supported the arch.’ concludes Lucifer noticing the huge support pillars of the city.  While all this was good and all but the thing which seemed a bit odd was how the angels reacted while seeing the city. Oddly, the angels looked like they recognised the city, and you only recognise something when you have seen it before. It was very suspicious. All the while, Azazel had slipped behind the group. Making sure that no one had noticed him, he reached into his armour’s storage unit and pulled out another beacon. A beacon needed only a small amount of Maya to active, but when added too much Maya, things get out of hands…….. Azazel overloaded the beacon with his excess input of Maya, causing it to malfunction.  When everyone else saw this, it was already too late. The beacon gave out some sparks before releasing a very bright beam of light into the sky along with a Maya wave which spread in all direction. The wave was enough to send most of the others on their back. The beacon projector dropped on the ground and broke due to all the energy it had released, but its job was done and Azazel had a smirk on his face. Lucifer stomped towards the Dark haired angel and held him by his neck. Lifting him off the ground, Lucifer glared into Azazel’s eyes and said dangerously, “What did you do?” But Azazel laughed at Lucifer’s threats. The fallen had enough of this guy and took out his gun. Making the other angel’s draw their weapons as well but right now Lucifer could care less, he shoved Azazel on the ground and put his barrel directly on his forehead and spoke again, “I will not ask again.” Then they heard it. The sound was clear. They turned to see that the forest trees were being shaken violently as something big made its way through them. Their eyes widened at this for they had a very good idea what it was. Azazel had a cruel smile on his face now. He said out aloud, “I suggest you start running.” The angel quickly freed himself from Lucifer’s grip and stood up.  Looking over to the angel’s and barked, “Men, to the sky!” with that Azazel opened his wings and flew away, leaving everyone shocked. Lucifer realized that Azazel had been storing energy for so long that it would allow him to fly again. It dawned at him hard; the bastard had been planning this all along. Lucifer would’ve shot down that dark haired angel himself had Luna not forcefully nudged him and yelled, “Luci, we don’t have time!” as soon as she said that, several Hell hounds popped out of the forest and locked eyes with them. They howled and charged. “WE HAVE TO GO!” yelled Rose. The other angels gulped and took off to the sky. Lucifer scoffed at this.                                                                                               ---X--- Azazel watched with upmost pleasure as Lucifer, the Phoenix and the demoness ran as fast their two legs could with a hoard of brutum at their tail. His two men flew over him and observed the scene as well but with sympathy in their eyes. The hoard seemingly ignored them for the while as none of them could fly. An angel to his right asked, “Sir, shouldn’t we help them?” “We’ll do no such thing soldier.” “Sir, but they helped us!” Azazel held the angel’s head and hissed, “So, do you want to join them as well?” terrified, the angel shook his head ‘no’ vigorously. Azazel let him go and continued to enjoy the view. “Um, Sir?” shakily asked the other angel. “What now?” “Private Gabriel is *gulp* still down there...” Azazel raised is brow at this. Then he laughed, “Is he now? Well it really is a tragic accident.” He spoke evilly.                                                                                           ---X---  “Screw this crap!” cursed Gabriel while trying to save his life from the Hounds. As an angel, he would have used his wing to fly away to safety but that wasn’t happening anytime soon. When he was hit by the falling debris that separated him from his team, the hit had done more than just made him fall. His wing was damaged severely and it would be days before it healed back to its formal glory, potentially making him downed for the while, which was a very-very bad thing, especially when he needed his wings more than anything. Worst was his so called team still didn’t come for his rescue. He had suspicion that Azazel had something to do with it. The young Angel made a decision that if he ever survived this, he will have the Dark haired bastard Court Marshalled! The hounds were closing in, their bodies glowing red with hostility. The fastest one pounced at him, only for a well placed maya blast from Lucifer to blow its head off. Gabriel was thrown to his ass in shock but Lucifer, who had just saved his hide, pulled the lad on his feet, “No time to sit, Boy. Run!” The angel didn’t have to be told twice. He quickly ran forward and caught up with the sliver haired Demoness Rose as Lucifer shot two more rounds from his gun and followed them. Luna was providing air support from above, burning down as much Hounds she could, but the hounds kept coming. The number of Hounds they had taken down was but a mere fraction of the number of these deadly beasts who were dead set of having them for lunch. “Your Leader is a real asshole you know that, Boy!” yelled Lucifer vaulting over a log which was soon broken into splinters by the hounds who run through them. “Tell me something I don’t know!” yelled Gabriel back. “Now is not the time!” scolded Rose. Lucifer grumbled and used his sword to hit a nearby tree. The tree itself was huge, thirty feet at the best and about six feet thick, yet the thing was cut like butter and fell just behind them, blocking the path for the Hell hounds as angry howls sounded from the other side at this. “This isn’t gonna hold them for long!” declared Lucifer and lead the group deeper into the forest to evade the Hounds. They ran a good distance, still trying to think of a way to actually get out of the situation without dying. “GUYS, BEFORE YOU!” screamed Luna from above. The ‘running’ trio were stunned when a group of Hounds emerged ahead of them with sick grins adorning their muzzles. Lucifer turned towards his other two companions with a grim look. They both knew what Lucifer meant by it and gave a hasty nod. Lucifer shook his head towards left and darted towards the other direction while firing his gun towards them. This enraged the Hounds and they went after Lucifer. The remaining two remained there, wishing Lucifer luck as he may have possibly sacrificed himself for their sake. But both felt a chill down their back as a deep guttural growl came from behind them. They slowly turned around and met a pair of glowing silver eyes.                                                                                          ---X---  “I’m getting old for this crap.” grumbled Lucifer. He ran deeper into the forest. Now that he had successfully made a huge group of Hounds follow him and made sure that those two Kids weren’t in the vicinity, he now could do some of his more powerful techniques without worrying about hurting any bystanders. Reaching a clearing, Lucifer stopped running. The hounds were confused by this and stopped as well. A hound walked before all the others and growled out in its own tongue, “Nege yotee Angelus, Al anak neda..” whose rough translation would be ‘No more running Angel,  You die now’. Lucifer didn’t answer because he didn’t understand a word of it nor did he even care; he just slowly pulled out his sword, making the Hounds curious. Lucifer slowly turned agitating the hounds with his serious face and glowing blue eyes. If one would see from a distance, one would see a normal Sirayan forest. Until the whole ground trembled along with the trees and a huge cloud of dust rose towards the sky due to a very powerful impact which sent shock waves in all directions. Back at the clearing, to call it a clearing would be wrong as in its place was a hundred meter wide crater. The trees around the crater were either uprooted or in an extreme angle, the dust cloud was high in the air and in the middle of all this was Lucifer. No Hell hound could be seen around as all were either killed or ran away with their tails behind their legs. The fallen ran his hand across the sword affectionately and spoke, “Yah, I missed you a lot old friend.” “Luci!” a familiar Phoenix descended towards him with laboured breath. She then looked around and gave him a disapproving look, “Did you just talk to the sword.” Lucifer’s eyes twitched in annoyance, “No. So what happened?” Luna seemed to have remembered why she was there in the first place and yelled frantically, “ROSE AND THE ANGEL GUY ARE IN TROUBLE!” The blond narrowed his eyes at this, “Take me there, Kid.”                                                                                           ---X--- Rose jumped through a looped root of a tree and used the mushrooms growing at the base of the trees as skipping platforms. Her smaller and agile frame gave her more room to move freely in such places. But the same couldn’t be said for Gabriel, his bulky amour was restricting and he had to stick to the ground for now. And it really didn’t help that the biggest Hell Hound in the hoard, probably their leader thougth it was wise to chase after them. Making them both wish that it had gone after Lucifer instead. The Beast, towering over a good Six meter was crushing everything in its wake. Rose jumped down towards the ground and made a mad dash forward where she could see light peeking from the thick bushes in front of her. She passed through it, but had to halt herself real quickly because before her was yet another cliff, far deeper than the one they had seen previously. A rustle of bush and Gabriel burst out of the bushes as well but didn’t seem to stop. On instinct Rose held the Angel back and stopped him from running off the cliff. Gabriel jerked his hand away from Rose’s hold and spat, “Unhand me, Demon!” making her immediately regret her decision.  The masked woman glared at the Angel and was about to argue back but then their common enemy jumped out of the bush as well. The Hound howled and stalked forward. Having no other choice, Gabriel pulled out his mace and his shield. His helmet covered his face once again and Rose readied her sabres. Angry at their defiance, the Hound muttered a single word and charged. That word was ‘Anaksen’ and it meant Death. The Hound swiped at them with its unnaturally sharp claws, forcing the angel and demon duo to evade it. When the hound was left wide after the attack, Gabriel hit it with his mace only to find out that his attacks were useless. The hound didn’t take kindly to this and smacked the angel across his chest with its long bushy but strong tail, which would have injured Gabriel even more had he not brought his Maya enhanced shield before him in nick time. The attack sent him through several trees before the angel landed heavily on the ground. The Brutum was about to make his way towards Gabriel to finish him off but it howled in pain as someone sliced its flank. Seeing the culprit was the masked female, the hound tried to smack her away as well but she was light of her feet and was able to dodge it. She sliced again but all her attacks were only scratching the Hound, not wounding it. A war cry was heard and the hound was bashed with a shield across its face by Gabriel who then smashed his mace at its face. Still no effect because Gabriel lacked the strength of a Brawler to pack enough punch with a blunt weapon and although Rose’s sharp weapons were hurting the Creature, it was not enough to actually cripple it. The two immortals looked at each other, the path was clear; if they wanted to live they had to work together. The hound charged again, Gabriel went before Rose and blocked the attack head on. He gritted his teeth to ignore the sting he felt because of the impact. The Hound would’ve swiped its claw again had it not been Rose who slid under the Hound and cut its chest. Thrashing in pain, the hound tried to crush the small demoness under it but Gabriel again bashed his shield at its face and this time he used both of his hand which was actually able stagger such a huge beast. Rose then threw one of her sabre at Gabriel who slashed at the Hound and with his strength, the hound yowled in pain as the wound was fairly deep. Not giving it time to rest, Rose closed the distance between herself and the Hound slashing its legs. This happened for quite a while; the hound was powerless against the combined might of a demon and an angel as both of them striked with such precision and team work that the giant hound had to fall to its knees. Seeing their chance Gabriel turned to Rose and yelled, “Demon, now!” he held his shield and pointed its face towards the hound. Rose nodded and ran towards the Angel. Jumping off, she stepped in Gabriel’s shield. The angel with a mighty heave pushed the shield upwards. Rose used this extra force to soar up to a good Twenty feet in the air, Twirling herself into position with an excellent display of grace and agility, Rose fell down head-first towards the Hound with her sabre. The hound looked up and its silver eyes widened as the demon fell. Using the momentum she gained from the fall, Rose plunged her Sabre into the Hound’s eye. The Brutum seized moving after that and Rose somersaulted back to the ground, her sabre still in her grasp. Slowly she stood up breathing heavily. Her sabre was then presented to her by Gabriel who came before her with an annoyed yet humbled look. “I never thought I would ever say this to a Demon, but you are a great warrior and a valuable comrade. Accept my gratitude and respect.” The angel said humbly and gave a slight bow. This surprised Rose, she must be the first demon in eons to earn respect of an angel and she was really flattered. She bowed back and took back her sword, “And mine to you as well.” he nodded back at this. However a deep growl drew their attention and they were really shocked to see that the hound wasn’t dead yet. It actually looked more pissed than ever. “I-Impossible...” Rose stammered, mortified in her position. The hound without warning pounced at them but Rose was too shocked to move. And imagine her shock when Gabriel actually shoved her out of the way and took the hit for her. “Aaargh!”, Gabriel screamed in pain and the hound’s claws tore through his armour and digged in his flesh. He felt excruciating pain but it was his right hand was the only thing keeping the Hound from biting off his head. Rose stood up and tried to help Gabriel but the hound saw this and smacked her away. The hound then turned back to finish what he started but then again they heard a voice yell, “Fire Barrage!” and several fire balls shoved the Hell hound away from Gabriel. They all looked up and saw it was Luna and the one who boosted their hopes ten folds, Lucifer. Rose came over Gabriel and inspected his wounds. Lucifer came over and kneeled besides them, “I cannot leave you kids for a even a moment can I?” Gabriel glared Lucifer at his humourless joke but writhed in pain as the claw wounds hurt like nothing he had felt before. Rose checked the claw wounds and gasped, “Oh no, his wounds are deep and the poison is spreading fast.” “Poison?” asked Luna coming over as well. Rose explained, ”Hell hounds are particularly notorious because of the Immortal essence devouring poison that is present in them. They can inject this on any target they strike with their claw and it has the same effect as what a poison does to a mortal body. The poison is ‘eating’ Gabriel as we speak.” Gabriel let out a pained howl. Lucifer frowned, “Can you heal him?” Rose seemed unsure but answered, “There is a way, but I need time.” The hound, now having a severely burnt face glared at them with extreme hatred. Lucifer met its gaze and spoke, “You got your time Ms. Rose. Do what you must…mean while I’ll deal with this pup here.” The silver haired demon frowned at this, “Be careful Lord Lucifer, the Hell Hound is very strong.” Lucifer chuckled at this. The hound roared and run towards Lucifer with speed not seen before. Lucifer slowly put down his sword and gun, getting into a fighting stance. The hound closed in and attempted to strike, only for Lucifer to back hand the Giant Dog and sending it skidding away, shocking the hound, Rose and Gabriel was well. Rose was speechless as the Hound who they had so much difficulty fighting and Lucifer back handed it like a child. A groan from Gabriel broke her train of thoughts and so she concentrated her mind on healing Gabriel rather than the sounds of pained moans from the Hound. Yet one thought was still there in her mind, ‘Just how strong is Lucifer!’ Lucifer punched the Hound hard in the face, stepping aside the hound’s futile counter attack, Lucifer punched its gut making the Hound double over in pain. Thinking to finish the fight fast, Lucifer stood on top of the Hound’s chest. The Brutum glared weakly at Lucifer and cursed. “Harak Al!” Lucifer narrowed his eyes and stomped hard. The impact caved the hound’s chest in its rib and the Mighty Beast died soundlessly and faded away in a black mist. With that taken care of, Lucifer came over his companions. “How is the Boy?” he asked. Rose, who seemed very tired, spoke groggily, “Lord Lucifer, I managed to cut away the poison from his body. But the entire process has been very…..taxing on me.” She shuddered when she tried to stand up. Luna came to her aid and supported her. While Lucifer touched her shoulder and assured Rose, “Easy there Ms. Rose. You have done more than enough. I thank you.” Now he stood over Gabriel and asked, “How do feel, Boy?” The said angel groaned and mumbled, “Like crap….but the pain is gone, so I’ll live.” Lucifer nodded and helped him up. Now that all was good and well Luna skipped in the air and merrily declared, “We did it! We are all okay!” And she must have jinxed them as more growls sounded from the bushes. One by one more Hounds emerged from the bushes and all looked very pissed at the death of their leader. The Four of them backed up together while Gabriel hissed, “You had to open that mouth of yours didn’t you, Phoenix!” Luna laughed nervously at this. Lucifer and the others slowly drew their weapons readying themselves for yet another fight. The hounds howled as if daring them to make their move. The four were about to rush forward to oblige their challenge. Out of the Blue several Maya blasts came from behind them and the amount of fire power behind the barrage of Blasts was more than enough to utterly destroy the Brutums. Lucifer had to drag everyone to safety so that none of them would be caught in the cross fire and for a while, all they could hear was yelps of pain and the constant sounds of Maya blasts. When the firing seized, Lucifer brought out his wing and slowly came out with the rest of his companions behind him. What he saw made him swallow hard. Angels, a whole lot of them. Around forty of them along with five Cleanser turrents were aiming at him and those behind him. He then recognised the one in the middle who was all too familiar. With a cruel and cocky grin pasted on his face, Azazel smirked, “Missed me?”…………………………………….
