The more I thought about it the less sense that it made, but it also proved what a coward Kent was. He attacked a human first, knowing that he wouldn't be able to defend himself as well against a werewolf, let alone an Alpha, but maybe that was all part of his plan to pick us off one by one, starting with the weakest. Cody wasn't going to be weak for long though now that Amber had changed him, he would become a werewolf like us and take his rightful place in the pack, if he survived that is.
