Rene Bittenbaur, the former bank manager in the Swiss city of Gruslac, accepted Atella’s invitation to spend a long weekend at the Schloss. She was flattered. A free weekend at the elite mountain stronghold was not something that came along every day. She packed lightly and planned to do some local cross-country skiing and perhaps a bit of figure skating in the modern indoor rink she had heard so much about.
She did not plan to spend the entire weekend, several more weeks, or the rest of her life there.
