Chapter 2: An Unexpected Offer

483 Words
The rain had stopped, but Maya Carter's heart still felt heavy as she stood outside the office building. She stared at the envelope in her hands. It contained her final paycheck—barely enough to cover one month's rent. Her phone buzzed. It was her younger brother, Ethan. "Hey, Maya! Are you coming home soon? I made noodles for dinner." She forced a smile. "I'll be home soon." She ended the call before he could hear the sadness in her voice. Ethan was only sixteen. He had already lost their parents years ago. The last thing Maya wanted was for him to worry. As she crossed the street, a loud screech of tires shattered the silence. A speeding motorcycle raced toward her. Maya froze. Before she could react, a firm hand grabbed her arm and pulled her back onto the sidewalk. Her heart pounded. "You should pay attention when crossing the road." The deep, calm voice made her look up. Standing before her was the same man she had briefly noticed sitting in the black luxury car. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his expression composed, his eyes sharp yet strangely kind. "I... I'm sorry," Maya whispered, still shaken. "Are you hurt?" She shook her head. "I'm fine. Thank you." A bodyguard approached. "Sir, the meeting starts in ten minutes." The man nodded but kept his attention on Maya. "You dropped this." He handed her the envelope containing her paycheck. She hadn't even realized it had slipped from her hands. "Thank you." "My name is Alexander Stone." "Maya Carter." For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. Alexander noticed the company logo printed on the envelope. "You worked here?" "I did." His eyes narrowed slightly. "And today was your last day." Maya managed a small smile. "I guess it's the beginning of a new chapter." There was sadness behind the words, but also determination. Alexander admired that. Most people he met either wanted his money or feared his influence. Maya did neither. He reached into his pocket and handed her a simple business card. "If you're looking for work, come to Stone Global Holdings tomorrow at ten." Maya stared at the card. "I'm not asking for charity," she said quietly. A faint smile appeared on Alexander's face. "Neither am I. I'm offering you an opportunity." Before she could ask another question, he stepped into the waiting car. The black sedan pulled away, leaving Maya standing on the sidewalk with the business card in her hand. She looked down at the elegant silver lettering. Alexander Stone Chief Executive Officer Stone Global Holdings She had no idea why one of the city's most successful billionaires had offered to meet her. But for the first time since losing her job, she felt a spark of hope. As she slipped the card into her bag, she whispered to herself, "Maybe tomorrow will change everything." To be continued.
