Chapter 3: Behind the Glass Doors

Maya barely slept that night. Alexander Stone's business card sat on the small table beside her bed, and she found herself staring at it every few minutes. "Do you really think this is a good idea?" Ethan asked over breakfast. "I don't know," Maya admitted. "But opportunities don't come twice. I have to try." After putting on her best outfit—a neatly pressed navy-blue blouse and black trousers—she left for Stone Global Holdings. The company headquarters towered over the city like a monument to success. Its glass exterior reflected the morning sun, making it almost impossible to look away. Maya took a deep breath and walked inside. The lobby was elegant, with polished marble floors, fresh flowers, and employees moving confidently in every direction. "Good morning," the receptionist greeted her. "How may I help you?" "I'm here to see Mr. Alexander Stone." The receptionist smiled after checking her computer. "Mr. Stone is expecting you. Please take the elevator to the top floor." Maya's eyes widened. He was expecting her? Moments later, the elevator doors opened into a quiet executive floor. Alexander stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the city. Without turning around, he said, "You came." "You invited me." He smiled slightly before facing her. "I did." He motioned for her to sit. "I've reviewed your employment history. The position requires discretion, organization, and excellent communication skills." Maya hesitated. "Why me? There are people with more experience." "Experience can be taught," Alexander replied. "Character cannot." Before Maya could answer, the office door burst open. A stylish woman in a designer suit entered without knocking. "Alexander, we need to talk." Her eyes landed on Maya. "And who is she?" "My new employee," Alexander answered calmly. The woman's smile disappeared. "I wasn't aware you were hiring." "I don't need permission." The room fell silent. Maya could feel the tension between them. As the woman walked out, she glanced back at Maya with a cold expression. "This isn't over." The door closed behind her. Maya turned to Alexander. "Who was that?" He sighed. "Vanessa Reed. She's our Marketing Director... and someone who doesn't like surprises." Maya had a feeling she wasn't just talking about the new job. Something told her that accepting Alexander's offer would change her life in ways she never imagined. To be continued
