Chapter 5: The Gala of Secrets

541 Words
The following evening, Maya stood in front of her bedroom mirror, smoothing the fabric of the elegant navy-blue gown Alexander's office had arranged for the event. She hardly recognized herself. "You look amazing," Ethan said with a grin. "Just don't forget us little people when you become famous." Maya laughed and lightly nudged his shoulder. "I'm only going to work, not walk a movie premiere." --- A black luxury car waited outside her apartment. When Maya arrived at the Grand Royal Hotel, cameras flashed as guests stepped onto the red carpet. Alexander stood near the entrance in a perfectly tailored tuxedo. For a moment, he was speechless. "You look wonderful," he said sincerely. "Thank you." He offered his arm. "Shall we?" Trying to ignore the photographers, Maya walked beside him into the ballroom. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead while soft music filled the room. Business executives, celebrities, and investors mingled with glasses of champagne in hand. "This is incredible," Maya whispered. Alexander smiled. "Stay close. Tonight is about more than celebration." --- As they greeted guests, Maya noticed several people watching Alexander with unusual interest. One man in particular never seemed to look away. He was tall, dressed in a dark suit, and wore a confident smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Who is that?" Maya asked quietly. Alexander's expression changed. "His name is Damien Cross." "You know him?" "He was once my closest friend." "And now?" "My biggest competitor." Before Maya could ask another question, Damien approached them. "Alexander." "Damien." The two men shook hands, but the tension between them was unmistakable. Damien turned to Maya. "So this is your new assistant." "Maya Carter," she replied politely. Damien smiled. "It's a pleasure. I've heard quite a lot about you already." Maya frowned slightly. "We've never met." "No," Damien replied. "But in business, information travels quickly." His words left her uneasy. --- Later in the evening, while Alexander gave a speech on stage, Maya stepped into the hallway to answer a phone call from Ethan. "I'm fine," she reassured him. "The event is almost over." As she ended the call, she noticed a folder lying on a nearby table. It had Alexander's company logo on it. Thinking it had been misplaced, she picked it up. Just then, she heard footsteps. Vanessa emerged from the shadows. "What are you doing?" Vanessa demanded. "I found this folder." Vanessa snatched it from Maya's hands. "You shouldn't touch things that don't belong to you." "I was only trying to help." Vanessa stared at her for a long moment before walking away without another word. Maya's instincts told her something wasn't right. --- As the gala came to an end, Alexander and Maya headed toward the exit. Suddenly, a security guard rushed over. "Mr. Stone!" Alexander stopped. "What is it?" "There has been a security breach." "What happened?" "The confidential merger documents are missing." The ballroom fell silent. Every eye turned toward Alexander. Then another voice spoke. "We found someone holding the folder earlier tonight." Maya's heart sank. The security guard looked directly at her. "It was her." The room erupted in whispers. Alexander stared at Maya, his expression unreadable. For the first time since they met... He wasn't sure what to believe. To be continued
