Alexander drove through the quiet streets, his hands steady on the steering wheel while Maya clutched Ethan's phone.
The message from the kidnapper had been short:
Old Harbor Warehouse 17. Come alone. No police.
"They're expecting us," Maya said softly.
"I know."
"So why are we going?"
Alexander glanced at her.
"Because Ethan is counting on us."
---
As they approached the abandoned harbor, the buildings became darker and more isolated. A thick fog rolled in from the water, making it difficult to see more than a few meters ahead.
Alexander parked a short distance from Warehouse 17.
He opened the glove compartment and removed a small flashlight.
"Stay close to me."
Maya nodded.
The warehouse door creaked open with a loud groan. Inside, stacks of old shipping containers cast long shadows across the concrete floor.
"Ethan!" Maya called.
Only silence answered.
Then...
A voice echoed through the building.
"You're right on time, Mr. Stone."
A spotlight flicked on.
Standing on a raised platform was Damien Cross.
Maya's eyes widened.
"Damien?"
He smiled.
"I was wondering how long it would take you to figure out this wasn't just a business rivalry."
Alexander stepped forward.
"Where's Ethan?"
Damien's smile disappeared.
"Safe... for now."
"If you've hurt him—"
"I haven't."
Damien raised a hand.
"But whether he stays safe depends entirely on what you do next."
Two men emerged from behind the containers, each dressed in black. They escorted Ethan into the light.
His hands were tied, but he appeared unharmed.
"Maya!" Ethan shouted.
"I'm okay!"
Relief washed over Maya.
She tried to run toward him, but Alexander gently held her back.
"It's a trap."
Damien laughed.
"Very observant."
He pulled a sealed envelope from his jacket.
"Inside this envelope is a contract."
Alexander frowned.
"What contract?"
"The merger agreement."
"What about it?"
"I want you to sign over your controlling shares in Stone Global."
Maya stared in disbelief.
"You kidn*pped Ethan for a business deal?"
Damien shook his head.
"No."
He looked directly at Alexander.
"I kidn*pped him because I knew you would never ignore someone Maya loves."
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"So this has never been about money."
"No."
Damien's eyes hardened.
"It's about revenge."
Before Alexander could respond, another voice echoed from the back of the warehouse.
"He's telling the truth."
Everyone turned.
A woman stepped out of the shadows.
It was Vanessa.
She looked frightened, but determined.
"I know who the real mastermind is."
Damien spun around.
"Vanessa... you weren't supposed to be here."
She took a deep breath.
"The person behind everything... isn't Damien."
Maya's heart pounded.
"Then who is it?"
Vanessa pointed toward the darkness behind the platform.
A slow clap echoed through the warehouse.
A tall figure stepped into the light.
Alexander's face went pale.
"It can't be..."
