Chapter 19: The Final Meeting

510 Words
Night had fallen over the city. The abandoned Stone Global headquarters stood like a forgotten monument, its broken windows reflecting flashes of lightning from the approaching storm. Alexander parked across the street and looked at the building. "This is where my father started the company," he said quietly. "And where it almost ended." Detective Bennett addressed the tactical team gathered around two police vans. "Remember, Richard Hale is intelligent and dangerous. We assume the building is under surveillance. Move carefully." Officers nodded and spread out. --- Inside the building, dust covered the once-grand lobby. Old company logos still hung on the walls. Maya ran her fingers across one of them. "So much history..." Alexander looked at a faded photograph of himself and Nathan as children standing beside their father. "He always believed this company should improve people's lives." "And it still can," Maya replied. Her words gave him strength. --- Jordan examined a blueprint of the building. "According to the plans, the executive boardroom is on the top floor." Nathan frowned. "That's exactly where Richard will expect us to go." Alexander smiled slightly. "Then we won't." He pointed to an old maintenance tunnel beneath the basement. "We'll approach from below." --- The underground passage was dark and silent. As they climbed the final staircase, Jordan stopped suddenly. "Wait." He knelt beside the door. "A pressure sensor." Detective Bennett looked closer. "Explosives." Jordan carefully disconnected the wiring. "If we'd opened that door..." "The entire staircase would've collapsed," Nathan finished. Maya shivered. "They're trying to trap us." "No," Alexander said. "They're trying to slow us down." --- At exactly 11:00 p.m., the team entered the executive floor. The boardroom doors stood open. Inside, one man sat alone at the long conference table. He slowly applauded. "Welcome." Richard Hale. He looked older than the photographs, but his sharp eyes revealed the same calculating mind. "I've been expecting you." Alexander stepped forward. "It's over, Richard." Richard smiled. "No." He slid a small remote control onto the table. "It's only beginning." Detective Bennett raised her weapon. "Don't touch it!" Richard ignored her. "For twenty years, you've believed this story was about revenge." He looked directly at Alexander. "It wasn't." "Then what was it about?" Richard leaned back in his chair. "Legacy." He pressed a button. Every screen in the boardroom came to life. Security cameras from around Stone Global headquarters appeared. Then live news broadcasts interrupted the screens. A breaking headline flashed across every monitor: STONE GLOBAL ACCUSED OF DECADES OF FRAUD. CEO ALEXANDER STONE UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. Maya gasped. "That's impossible." Richard smiled. "I've already released forged evidence to the media." Alexander's phone began ringing nonstop. Board members. Investors. Journalists. The company's stock price was crashing in real time. Richard stood. "I told you..." "...I wouldn't destroy your life." He smiled coldly. "I'd destroy your name." Outside, police sirens echoed through the city as news helicopters circled overhead. For the first time, Alexander realized this battle wasn't just about proving Richard guilty. It was about saving everything his father had built. To be continued
