The Uninvited Guest

The air in the room felt thick enough to cut with a knife. For a terrifying second, Kate thought Xavier was going to tear the entire ward apart. His jaw had tightened into a hard line, and his dark eyes burned with a dangerous, volatile intensity. But then, right before her eyes, his composure shifted. The sudden flash of shock vanished, seamlessly replaced by an unsettling, icy calm. He didn't yell, and he didn't demand answers. Instead, he simply stared down at her, his expression smoothing into an unreadable, flawless mask. Before Kate could dig her own grave any deeper or let her racing thoughts betray her out loud, Xavier stepped closer. His large, warm hand reached down and firmly grasped her wrist. The touch wasn't painful, but it was completely unyielding—instantly anchoring her erratic movements and forcing her into silence. Looking past Kate, Xavier offered a warm, remarkably polished smile to Eleanor, his voice dropping into a smooth, reassuring register. "Please excuse her nervousness, Mrs. Vance. Kate tends to get flustered easily around company. The truth is, I’m actually an old friend of hers from high school." Kate’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. She looked up at his sharp profile, her heart doing a frantic, chaotic flip at the sheer brilliance of his sudden lie. "We used to do almost everything together back then," Xavier continued flawlessly, his tone laced with a perfectly manufactured sense of nostalgia. "Projects, studying, walking around campus... we were practically inseparable. When she recently reached out about a position at my firm, I couldn't help but look out for her." Eleanor’s expression softened completely, a beautiful, relieved smile returning to her pale face. "Oh, an old school friend! How wonderful. I always worried Katherine didn't have enough people looking out for her in the city. And what did you say you do for a living, Xavier? You look so—" Internal alarm bells began screaming in Kate's head. If her mother found out he was the multi-billionaire CEO of Sterling Global, the entire web of lies would collapse right then and there. She opened her mouth to frantically interrupt. "Mom, he's just—" *SLAM!* The heavy wooden door of the hospital room swung open with an aggressive, resounding thud, cutting Kate off entirely. Standing in the doorway was a nineteen-year-old girl with her arms tightly crossed and a fierce, irritated glare locked onto her face. It was Abigail, Kate’s younger sister. "Where on earth have you been for the past two days, Kate?!" Abigail barked loudly, her voice dripping with sheer bratty annoyance. "I’ve been stuck here taking care of Mom by myself while you’ve been off playing ghost!" But as Abigail stepped fully into the private room, her eyes naturally drifted past her sister and landed squarely on the man standing at the foot of the bed. The angry words died instantly in her throat. Xavier stood at his full height—an intimidating, striking six-foot-two—the tailored charcoal suit hugging his broad shoulders with corporate perfection. He looked like an absolute god who had accidentally wandered into a mundane, sterile hospital ward. Abigail froze on the spot, her hostile posture melting away as she looked him up and down. A faint pink flush crept up her cheeks, and she quickly tried to compose herself, smoothing down the front of her messy, casual shirt. "Oh... um. Who is this?" Kate rolled her eyes, deliberately stepping into her sister's line of sight to break the spell. "Abigail, meet Xavier. He’s... my friend from high school. He was kind enough to give me a ride here to check on Mom." "An old friend? Pfft," Abigail scoffed sarcastically, her usual bratty attitude returning as a mischievous smirk tugged at her lips. She eyed Kate with pure amusement. "Well, he definitely couldn't be your boyfriend. You could never land someone that hot." Kate's temper flared, her fists clenching at her sides as her cheeks burned with embarrassment. "Abigail! Keep your mouth shut before I—" "Girls, that is enough," Eleanor raised her voice slightly from the hospital bed, her gentle tone cutting right through the sibling bickering. "Stop your fighting. We have a guest in the room, show some manners." Lowering her head, Kate deflated slightly, the exhaustingly high stakes of the morning wearing her down. "I'm sorry, Mom." Abigail simply rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "Whatever." Xavier, completely unbothered by the sudden burst of sisterly drama, smoothly stepped into action. He walked over to the corner of the room where a folded wheelchair stood, unfolding it with a practiced, effortless elegance before rolling it to the side of the mattress. Moving with a surprising amount of care and strength, he gently placed his large hands under Eleanor's arms, lifting her onto the plush seat without a single strain. Nervously stepping forward, Kate reached out for the black handles. "Xavier, it’s fine. You don't have to worry about pushing her. I can handle it." Xavier gently brushed Kate’s hands away from the grips. He looked down at her, his dark eyes locking onto hers as a soft, incredibly private smile touched his lips—a look so full of hidden possessiveness and dark amusement that it sent a violent shiver straight to Kate's core. "I've got it, Kate," his deep voice murmured. "Rest." From her vantage point in the wheelchair, Eleanor didn't miss a single detail. She saw the intense, heavy look Xavier gave her daughter, and she noticed the sudden, undeniable electricity crackling between them. She kept completely silent, her wise eyes observing the scene with a quiet, knowing look. But Abigail saw a golden opportunity, and she wasn't about to waste it. Before Kate could even register the movement, Abigail lunged forward, grabbed Xavier tightly by his massive bicep, and began dragging the towering CEO toward the hallway doors. "Hey, 'high school friend,' come with me for a second," Abigail smirked mischievously, giving him a playful tug. "I need to ask you a few questions about how you actually survived my sister back then." Kate’s jaw dropped in absolute, suffocating panic as she watched her teenage sister literally kidnap the most dangerous, ruthless billionaire in the city. "Abigail! You get back here right now!" As Abigail successfully pulled a remarkably amused Xavier out into the quiet corridor, Eleanor watched her eldest daughter stamp her foot in sheer frustration. A soft, gentle smile spread across the mother's face. She didn't know who Xavier really was yet, but she knew one thing for certain—he was definitely far more than just a friend
