The Lions Den

The relentless Monday morning sun offered no comfort to the thick, nerve-wracking tension brewing in the small apartment. Kate stood before her mirror, her hands slightly trembling as she smoothed down the fabric of a sophisticated, high-end dress she had carefully chosen for the occasion. "Wow, look at you!" Abigail chirped, strolling into the room completely oblivious to the arrangement Kate had entered into. She leaned against the doorframe, eyeing the elegant outfit with an arched brow. "Why are you dressing so fancy today? Are you going for a movie role audition or something?" Kate pulled on her earrings, her nerves stretched too thin to handle the playful interrogation. "It's none of your business, Abigail," she retorted, her voice sharper than intended. "Okayyy," Abigail sang out, raising her hands in mock surrender. She skipped away without a care in the world, leaving Kate alone with her roaring thoughts. Stepping outside the building, Kate found a sleek, undeniably luxurious car parked right by the curb, reserved exclusively for her transit. She hurriedly grabbed her purse, her heels clicking against the pavement as she walked toward the vehicle. The chauffeur moved with practiced precision, opening the passenger door in a gentle, highly respectful manner. Kate swallowed the lump in her throat, stepped inside, and braced herself for the storm ahead. By the time the vehicle pulled up to the elite Sterling estate, Kate had forced her panic into a deep chest of quiet focus. She stepped out of the car and walked into the massive, breathtaking penthouse majestically, carrying herself with the grace of a woman who belonged in high society, even as her heart hammered against her ribs. Taking a quiet, steadying breath, she crossed the threshold into the sprawling dining room where the family awaited her. Sitting around the long, mahogany table were four unfamiliar guests, with Xavier himself seated firmly at the center. Kate didn't falter. She bowed her head slightly, offering a greeting packed with such pristine courtesy and elegance that even Madam Beatrice’s notoriously critical eyes softened with immediate approval. Seeing her entrance, Xavier stood up seamlessly from his seat. He walked over, wrapping his arms around her for a convincing, warm hug before leaning down to press a light, tender peck onto her forehead. The familiar scent of his sharp cologne briefly grounded her before he turned back to the table. With a perfectly controlled, smooth voice, he began introducing her to his parents and siblings, and vice versa. "It is nice to finally meet the woman Xavier keeps talking about," Beatrice said, her sharp features shifting into a rare, welcoming smile. Kate offered a respectful, perfectly balanced tone. "Oh, it's an absolute pleasure, Ma." The initial pleasantries flowed smoothly until Horace Sterling leaned forward, his voice turning deeply analytical. He began throwing pointed questions about her background, her current level of study, and her lineage. The moment the interrogation shifted toward her parents, Kate’s breath hitched in her throat. She hesitated, the silence stretching for a fraction of a second too long. Sensing the drop in the room's atmosphere, Xavier intervened instantly, setting his glass down with a firm click. "That's enough for now. Let's eat." "Hey," Julian retorted immediately, crossing his arms as his lips curled into a sharp, interrogative stare. "Don't we need to know about her background before we go letting her into this family? We aren't running a charity, Xavier." Xavier’s jaw clenched, a dangerous flash of annoyance crossing his dark eyes as he prepared to snap back at his brother. But before he could speak up, Kate gently reached over beneath the edge of the table, holding his hand with a steady, firm grip to ground him. She looked directly at Horace and Julian, her voice unwavering. "My father is Arthur Vance," Kate stated, deliberately invoking a name that still held respect in older corporate circles. She spoke eloquently about the prominent logistics firm her father had run before his untimely passing, and how, in the wake of his death, they had lost everything to his incredibly selfish, conniving extended family. The raw, elegant tragedy of her delivery struck a chord. Beatrice’s expression softened completely, her eyes turning emotional as she listened to the story of a high-society girl wronged by her own blood. "Oh, you poor thing... and what about your mother?" Kate’s mind raced. She knew with absolute certainty that if she mentioned Eleanor’s current, critical health condition or the mountain of medical debts, it would look highly suspicious—almost like a textbook setup for a financial contract. "She is doing remarkably well," Kate lied smoothly, keeping her expression perfectly serene. "She lives a quiet life now." "Urgh, I'm tired of this lullaby," Julian interrupted, loudly rolling his eyes as he started talking over her with arrogant disdain. He leaned forward, tapping his fingers aggressively against the table. "Ask her something that's actually relevant to the cause. We aren't here to cry over old family drama." Victoria snapped her head toward her brother, her eyes narrowing. "Don't be so insensitive, Julian. Have some manners." Horace, however, raised a hand, his cold eyes locked entirely on Kate as he agreed with his eldest son. "Julian is right about one thing. Grace is fine, but Sterling Global needs substance." He leaned back, throwing a series of highly complex, brutal questions about the company's future strategy, specifically targeting the intricate details of the high-stakes commercial district deal their dynasty was currently closing with an international syndicate. The question was a massive corporate trap. It was so densely layered and complex that even Victoria couldn't have answered it without stuttering over the financial metrics. Julian smirked, leaning back in his chair as he waited for the absolute trainwreck that would expose Kate as a fraud. Thankfully, Xavier had spent hours briefing her at the penthouse days prior, ensuring she memorized the core infrastructure and localized parameters of the deal. Without a single beat of hesitation, Kate adjusted her posture, leaned into the space, and answered the question perfectly. Her analysis of the syntactic and operational risks was so flawless it left Horace staring at her in stunned silence. Julian's smirk faltered, and in a desperate bid to salvage his trap, he threw a few more rapid-fire, technical questions at her. Kate caught each one seamlessly, dismantling his arguments with absolute precision. Julian was left completely speechless, his mouth opening slightly as his face flushed with acute humiliation. Xavier let out a low, satisfied breath. A brilliant, genuine smile broke across his handsome features as he looked around the silent table, his dark eyes fixed proudly on her. "Isn't she lovely?" Beatrice let out a delighted, ringing laugh, completely won over by the performance. "Oh, I'm absolutely loving her already!" The rest of the table instantly erupted into amused, warm laughter, leaving a bitter, humiliated Julian completely left out in the cold as Kate officially secured her place in the lion's den.
