Worlds Apart

The sleek sedan glided away from the highway, leaving behind the smooth, illuminated suspension bridge and descending into the gritty, labyrinthine streets of Kate’s neighborhood. The contrast was stark. The bright neon lights of the commercial district faded into the dim, flickering glow of broken streetlamps, and the quiet hum of the luxury car was replaced by the distant noise of the bustling city outskirts. Xavier navigated the uneven roads with a tense grip on the steering wheel, his eyes scanning the crowded alleyways and worn-down storefronts. He remembered the deep sense of discomfort—the sheer disgust—he had felt the first time he had ever stepped foot into this neighborhood. It was a world completely alienated from his own. Turning his head slightly, his voice cut through the silence of the cabin, sharp and uncompromising. "Remind me when you can... you and your family can't live here anymore." Kate blinked, caught off guard. She turned from the window to face him, her brow furrowing curiously. "Why?" Xavier scoffed softly, his eyes flicking to a group of loiterers on a nearby corner before looking back at the road. "How can you possibly be comfortable living in the slums?" The word hit her like a physical slap. A sudden wave of defensiveness rose in her chest, and she felt deeply insulted. This was the place that had sheltered her when the world was unkind; these streets held her memories. Forcing her voice to remain calm, she answered with a touch of innocent defiance, "I love it here." Xavier let out a heavy, exasperated sigh. "Kate, look at the bigger picture. I want everyone to know that you are the wife of Xavier Sterling. I don't want the media or my business associates digging around and thinking that I took in a girl from the gutt..." He cut himself off abruptly, the final word dying on his tongue as he realized how harsh it sounded. Kate caught the slip immediately. The heavy silence stretched between them for a long moment. She swallowed the bitterness rising in her throat, drawing a deep breath before giving a stiff, resigned nod. "Fine." "Can you convince your mother?" Xavier asked, his tone returning to its usual calculated efficiency. "Yes," she replied quietly. "I can." "Perfect," Xavier said, pulling the car up to the curb right outside her apartment building. He shifted the gear into park but kept the engine idling. "And also, you will have to move in with me. Not permanently, of course—just until our contract officially ends." Kate didn’t answer right away. She simply stared out the window at the familiar facade of her home, the reality of her uprooted life finally sinking in. She reached for the door handle, eager to escape the suffocating luxury of the car, but before she could push it open, Xavier’s hand shot out. His fingers wrapped gently but firmly around her wrist, stopping her in her tracks. "I'm sure you don't have corporate attire in your closet," he said, his eyes locking onto hers with intense seriousness. "When you move in with me, you're dumping the old clothes for entirely new ones. Next week, I am going to officially introduce you at the company headquarters, and you will start accompanying me to high-profile business meetings." Kate stared at him, the weight of the upcoming week pressing down on her. She gave a slow, compliant nod. "Understood." Xavier released his grip. She stepped out into the humid night air, the heavy door clicking shut behind her. Instead of heading straight inside, Kate walked up to the small balcony of her building and collapsed into an old chair. She sat there in the dim light, rubbing her temples, desperately trying to process everything Xavier had just dumped on her. The move, the new wardrobe, the public exposure at Sterling Enterprises—her life was spinning out of control. Finally, she stood up, took a deep breath, and unlocked the front door of her apartment. Inside, the atmosphere was surprisingly warm. Eleanor was sitting up, and a wave of relief washed over Kate. Her mother was recovering beautifully. The pale, wrinkled, and exhausted face that had broken Kate’s heart in the hospital room was now gone, replaced by a healthy, lively glow. On the adjacent couch, Abigail was curled up, her eyes glued to her phone screen as always, completely ignoring Kate's entry. Kate crossed her arms, a playful but tired pout on her lips. "Abigail! Don't you even miss me?" she barked. Abigail rolled her eyes, letting out a dramatic "Tch" as she reluctantly locked her phone and stood up. She stepped forward, throwing her arms around Kate in a hesitant, brief embrace. "Welcome back," she muttered. Eleanor smiled warmly from the sofa, her eyes bright with anticipation. "How did it go, Kate? How was the visit?" Kate forced her anxiety into the background, letting out a bright smile to keep her mother at ease. "I think they like me." Eleanor’s face lit up, and she clasped her hands together in pure joy. Even Abigail looked up, completely bewildered by the sudden celebration. "Wait, what is going on?" Abigail asked, looking back and forth between her mother and sister, entirely oblivious to the secret marriage contract. "Why are they expected to like you? Who is even supposed to like you?" Eleanor laughed it off, playfully swatting the air. "Get a shower first, Kate, and then come back out to drop the full gist for us." "On it!" Kate said, quickly running down the short hallway to her bedroom. She closed the door behind her, leaning against it as she finally let her guard down. The room was quiet. She began to undress, tossing her jacket onto the bed. As she reached for her phone to set it on the nightstand, the screen lit up with a pending notification. It was a text message from Gregg, sent over an hour ago. A pang of conflict twisted in her stomach. Sitting on the edge of her mattress, she decided to dial his number. The phone rang twice before his cheerful voice boomed through the speaker. "Hey, darling!" "Hey, Gregg," Kate murmured, her voice softening instantly. "How is the moon of my life doing?" he asked warmly. "I'm alright," she replied, trying to sound cheerful. "How was work? How are you adjusting to the new job?" "It’s alright, nothing too hard," Gregg dismissed quickly, completely dropping the work talk as his tone turned eager. "Listen, we've been so apart lately. Can we go out on a date soon? Maybe the park, or that restaurant we always visit?" An involuntary smile tugged at Kate's lips. "Awwn, that's sweet of you." She thought about it for a second, wanting to do something engrossing to take her mind off the Sterlings. "How about going to the cinema instead? I heard The Echo of Shadows was just released yesterday." "Anything for my love," Gregg replied without a second thought. "Then after the movie, mayyyybe we can visit the park... because I actually have a surprise for you." Kate raised an eyebrow, a sudden wave of curiosity cutting through her exhaustion. "Really? What is it?" "Anticipate, dearie," Gregg chuckled, using her favorite phrase against her. "Alright, alright. I love you, Kate," Gregg said, his voice dripping with genuine affection. The words hung heavily in the air. A suffocating guilt wrapped around Kate’s chest as she realized he was planning surprises for their future while her own life was being signed away to a Sterling. She hesitated, the silence stretching long and awkward on her end. Finally, forcing herself to swallow the shame of her secret contract, she managed to whisper, "You too."
