Run! Run! Run!

Travis paused, “Almost there,” he whispered. As we went deeper, the forest seemed to wrap around us like living walls and my breath quickened, regret setting in. “We’re here…” he finally said as we walked into a corner, stepping onto a hilltop where the moon shone bright and clearer. Below us, the vast thick forest stretched, leaves swaying with the wind. “It's beautiful…” I whispered. “Yes it is,” Travis replied, his gaze shifting to me. “Elena… I want to show you something,” his voice dropped. “Remember what I told you about werewolves?” My stomach twisted, “Not this again! Travis, there is no such thing as werewolves. They are just stories for movies and books! You’re beginning to scare me, just stop.” Travis remained unfazed, his expression becoming colder, “Just hear me out… I knew words wouldn’t convince you so I brought you here to show you… so you’d see how special you are.” A surge of fear washed through me and I snapped, “You know what? I’m leaving!” and I stormed away. “Elena!” I stopped in my tracks, my heart beginning to pound rapidly. His voice… that wasn’t Travis, that wasn't human. Slowly, I turned to face him, fear gripping me to my soul. Travis was naked, his huge figure heaving in the moonlight. Suddenly, he began to grow bigger, his bones cracking, his body changing before my eyes. His hands began to stretch, his flesh tearing away and revealing animalistic muscled fur and claws for fingers. I stood frozen, fear trapping me in place as my eyes widened in sheer terror of what I was witnessing. Gradually, Travis’s body transformed into a magnificent, primal beast and his cries emerged as deep howls and animal groans, a sound I only read about in books. Before me stood a beast… a werewolf! It spoke, its deep, hoarse growl sending shivers down my spine, “MINE…” The werewolf took a step closer, its burning green eyes fixated on me and suddenly my legs found strength. With a quick move, I turned my legs and was ready to run with the speed of light but suddenly my body stopped me. CRACK!! The sound of bone cracking echoed through the air. “What the f**k?! Is that my bone cracking?!” I thought, my mind racing as fast as my heartbeat. Then again it cracked, it was me! “Ahhhh!!!! What is happening to me?!” I screamed as my spine arched unnaturally. The pain! The pain was excruciating… unbearable. My body was on fire as if something inside me was trying to break free. My skin stretched until it ripped, and my screams tore through my throat with every crack. I glanced down at my hands and my eyes widened. My fingers were twisting and elongating and then, claws! Claws burst through the tips, ripping my flesh apart just like Travis. My knees buckled as I fell to the damp earth, my screams changing into a howl. “Breathe… breathe through it, let it happen,” Travis, the beast growled as he towered over me, his voice low, deep, and commanding. I wriggled and groaned as the pain was something I had never experienced, it consumed me like fire as my body gradually morphed into a werewolf. And then… Silence. It was over. Travis pulled me up and I stood in front of him panting, my mind trying to process what I just happened, what I just shifted into. “You’re beautiful…” he growl was low, like a whisper. His emerald green eyes shone bright in the moonlight sending a shiver down my spine. My eyes fell to my hands, they were no longer human. I had shifted into a shiny, beautiful, pure silver werewolf that glimmered under the moon’s soft glow. The world felt different now, sharper and clearer. The night air became filled with sounds and smells I never noticed before… the smell of leaves, the metallic kick of Travis’s breath… The pain had faded, replaced by a sense of fascination and wonder. My first attempt at talking came out as a growl, a low roar that caught me off guard. “T-Travis… w-what just happened?” Travis's wolf eyes were filled with a sense of fulfillment but there was something else, something deeper. He growled softly, his voice soothing. “Your true self, who you are… is what happened.” We stared at each other, sharing a moment of deep understanding and then he pulled me close, his arms sinking into my soft, silver-fur waist. “I’m going to shift back, just watch me. Don't worry, your body will lead you.” He stepped back and gradually, he transformed back into a human as I watched in awe. Then it was my turn. My body began to shift and gradually silver fur melted into skin. I shifted back to human form and the pain was bearable this time. I collapsed forward, into Travis' waiting arms and we stood there… naked and vulnerable under the moonlight. His eyes were now black, mesmerizing still and looking deep into me. “Elena… the moon goddess has fated us to be mates. You're mine, I'm yours,” he whispered, his voice soaked in desire and yearning as his face moved closer to mine. Suddenly I felt a growl within me as though a wild beast was awakening inside me. Travis chuckled, “That's your wolf… she’s excited.” He was right. I could feel what it felt and it sure was excited. Then like magnets to a wall, our lips touched, fierce and hungry. Our tongues devoured each other fiercely, It was magical, raw, and deep, a kiss unlike anything I have ever felt. Then… “Ahhhhh!!!” I screamed as I suddenly felt a hard nudge and pulled away. It came again and this time it hit me so hard that I had a migraine instantly and stumbled to the ground. “Elena! What is it?” Travis reached for me. If he didn't know what was happening to me, then what was it? In a split second, the beast in me growled and I began to shift, transforming back to my silver wolf self. With the speed of light and paws in the dirt, I took flight. My claws scratched the woods and my steps were mighty, heavy, and fast! I ran so fast that Travis's voice came to me as a soft echo, swept away almost immediately by the wind. And then a voice… her voice, roared in me, “Run! Run! Before it's too late!”
