How is this even possible?

She began to pull. The pain hit like lightning, raw and without warning. My wolf was tearing herself away from me. The pain came again, more excruciating than before. “Ahhhh!!! STOP!” I screamed, collapsing to the floor, my claws scraping the rug as my body convulsed. My wolf eyes stared into the mirror, witnessing the nightmare happening to me. As I continued to scream, muscles and flesh snapped like overstretched rubber and gradually, my silver-furred wolf separated from me. There we stood, now two separate beings locked in an intense stare. My wolf loomed over me, its blue eyes gazing down at me, burning with the same confusion I felt. My mind raced, was this normal? Travis never mentioned this. Slowly, I took a step back, dread rushing through my body. She mirrored my movement, carefully taking a step back as well to my surprise. We stood there, frozen in silence as we stared at each other until I mustered the courage to speak. “C-can y-you speak?” I stuttered, my voice barely a whisper. She remained silent, her heavy breaths and low growls the only sound breaking the silence. I took a cautious step forward and she did the same. I reached out, palm up and she followed and as if pulled by an invisible magnet, SNAP! Fur became skin, claws became nails, and we crashed together, my human form gasping as her consciousness flooded back into mine. Once I recovered from the transformation, I called 881 and settled into the parlor pouch, my mind racing, trying to process all that just happened. ——— I stood in front of the mortuary, my eyes swollen from crying when Travis pulled over. Walking up to me, he muttered, “Hey… I’m so sorry,” and wrapped his hands around me in a warm embrace. Tears streamed down my face as I pressed against his chest. I needed comfort, the warmth but my wolf growled in protest as if she didn’t want me seeking solace in him. But I didn't move, I craved this and she wasn't going to stop me from getting it. “I should have been there with you, maybe this wouldn't have happened,” he muttered into my hair. “No… that wouldn't have changed anything. They were already gone Travis,” my throat burned as I gently pulled away from him. “But who could have done this? And why? What sort of cruelty is this?” Travis’s expression twisted in confusion and a hint of anger. “I have no idea… but this was no ordinary death. I could smell a strong hint of fur mixed with werewolf scent.” I paused, tears streaming down my eyes. “It’s all my fault, Travis,” I stammered as the pain of losing my parents came rushing back to me intensely. “No… Elena, don't say that, It’s not your fault. Whoever did this is the one to be blamed, okay? I promise you, we will find them,” Travis said gently as his fingers grazed my cheek, wiping away my tears. “Take me to school…” I muttered, brushing past him. “Elena… the principal said you should take as much time as you need to mourn.” “I can't stay in that house, Travis. I just can't,” I shot back. ——- Travis POV The forest road stretched out before us, the car engine humming through the suffocating silence. Thane moaned in my chest, aching for her pain. He longed to pet her, to lick away the salty tears from her cheeks just as wolves do to comfort each other. “Travis?” Her voice caught me off guard. “After the first shift… is there more? Anything else that needs to happen?” she asked softly. “Ermm… Just some control exercises and training so you get accustomed to your wolf…. Why do you ask?” I answered, glancing at her and back to the road ahead. Silence filled the car as Elena stared ahead. Then she whispered, “Nothing… it's nothing.” “Okay. You know, I could train you. Teach you how to utilize your skills and how to control your wolf,” I said glancing at her and back at the road. “That could be a welcome distraction…” I continued, placing my hands gently on her lap. Thane growled slowly in agreement. She jerked like I burned her. “Are you okay?” There was silence, her eyes wide with surprise. “I’m fine, it's just my wolf. She’s suddenly acting weird whenever we touch,” she replied. “Maybe that's her way of grieving, trying to protect you… you know,” I suggested but the way her fingers dung into the seats told me it was more than grief. Thane stirred in me, uneasy. “You’re probably right because she wasn't like this in the woods,” Elena stuttered, still startled. “It's fine. I'll just avoid touching you for now. By the way, have you named her yet?” “No… I haven't had time to even think of that,” she replied. “Well… Freya, goddess of War and Protection. What do you think?” I said, glancing at her, searching her face for approval. There was silence, then she muttered slowly, testing the name, “Frey…the goddess of war and magic.” I nodded in agreement and our eyes met. For the first time since the mortuary, her lips curved in a smile making Thane howled happily inside me. WHAM!!! Something monstrous, a shadow plowed into us from nowhere and suddenly we were airborne, weightless and the world rotated. Time seemed to come to a stop as the roof of the car crumpled like paper against the first tree we hit. Trees shattered, and glass rained like knives. SNAP!!! My seatbelt tore loose, sending my skull into the steering wheel and blood flooded my mouth. We were still moving, tumbling, rolling, glass and blood dancing in the air as I screamed in pain. PAM!! THUMP!!! Down we went until we came down a cliffside, crashing to a stop so fiercely I passed out. As I regained consciousness, a migraine hit me so hard that I passed out again. My eyes flickered open once more and slowly I surveyed the situation. We were upside down, suspended by two trembling trees at the edge of the cliffside. The car groaned like a dying animal, its creaking sound intensifying with every movement I made. “Elena!” I gasped and looked over the passenger seat. Her body hung upside down, unconscious and still wrapped in her seatbelt. Slowly, my heart pounding and my body aching, I reached out to her, “Elena…Elena…” I muttered, my voice shaking from the impact. Suddenly, SNAP! One of the branches of the tree that held us in place broke. “Be careful, don't move..” I told Elena as she blinked weakly, her eyes opening to the horrific scene. “T-Travis… W-what just happened?” she stuttered as she looked around, blood trickling down her head. “Elena, calm down and don't move… I’ll get us out of here okay?” I muttered, trying to stay calm for her. Thane growled inside me, his claws scratching my rib bone, trying to come out. And just then… AOOOOOO!!!!!
