I could feel my stomach drop momentarily, my heart racing at the sight of Paige and her cohorts but I remained composed.
“Elena,” she sneered. “What the hell are you doing in my boyfriend’s bathroom?! Are you that desperate?… Oh, you think he'll walk in here and fall for your little wet act?!” She mocked and her friends giggled like a pack of chihuahuas.
I swallowed hard, “Look, I just came in here to change. You threw me into the pool, remember? You know what, I'll go… I don't want any trouble,” I muttered and moved towards the door.
But then, a sudden pull yanked me back. I staggered, barely catching myself. “Paige! What was that for?” I snapped.
“Nobody walks out on me!” She hissed, her hand raised, ready to strike.
“HEY!”
Travis' voice cut through the tension just as her hand was about to connect with my face. He strode towards us, his eyes burning with rage, and in his hand, a black polo.
“Haven't you done enough, Paige? What’s wrong with you?” He continued, his eyes fiercely fixated on Paige.
Paige scoffed, rolled her eyes, and tossed her hair over her shoulder then her gaze shifted to me,
“Make sure all you do here is change. If I come back here and see you, you’ll not like the next prank I'd pull on you!” She leaned in towards me, every word dripping with malice. With that she stormed off, her followers scurrying after her.
Paige and I used to be inseparable in elementary school but everything changed when we got into high school. She became popular and started mingling with only girls she deemed worthy of her high-class standard of which I wasn't.
She barely spoke to me except when she needed help with her homework, that was when she’d be all nice and sweet. Immediately after that was sorted out, she went back to being a stranger.
This broke my heart but I kept the hope alive. Anytime I helped her, I did it happily hoping she'd remember us but nothing ever changed.
However, the cruelty in her actions tonight is what I wasn't expecting, It was just too much. I guess she finally noticed I liked her boyfriend Jesse.
“Here,” Travis handed me the polo. “Put it on, I'll wait outside for you,” he spoke gently.
Tears trickled down the corners of my eyes as I stared at his outstretched hand.
“Hey… don't let them get to you. They aren't worth your tears, okay?” he whispered gently, his beautiful eyes staring deep into me, it made me tremble.
I sniffled, taking the shirt from him.
“I’m outside,” Travis uttered before stepping out. Once I was finished, I came out of the bathroom,
“I'll need to come back here for my clothes,” I muttered.
“It’s fine… hope you're feeling better now?” Travis replied, his charming face radiating worry and concern as he moved his lips, causing my cheeks to blush.
“Yes, thanks,” I mumbled, brushing past him and heading for the house entrance.
“Elena, wait. Let me drive you home, it's getting late… I can't allow you to go home all alone,” Travis called out.
I turned around, the oversized polo swaying around me. “Travis, again… I appreciate what you've done for me but can you just leave me alone? Why are you even helping me?” I snapped as I tried to control my rising anger.
His eyebrows rose in surprise, his face turning serious, “Elena, you were drowning. I couldn’t just stand by and watch my classmate who sits beside me, go under.”
My breath caught, a soft gasp escaping my lips. “He notices me?” My mind raced.
The hallway fell silent as we stared at each other. I broke the silence, “I'm fine, I can go home by myself.”
“Elena…” He reached out, his fingers wrapping my wrist.
“Leave me alone!” I yanked my hand free, anger surging within me as my eyes stared fiercely at him. “I don't need one more person feeling sorry for me!”
Travis's face went pale, his eyes widened in shock as if he had just seen a ghost. He stood frozen, his whole body tensed up so much that a chill of fear crept down my spine.
Then, his voice came out fragile and soft,
“Elena…”

Travis POV
It’s not possible.
A werewolf in this town and she isn’t one of us? My father always claimed he wiped out every rogue wolf that didn’t join our pack.
But as she pulled away, her eyes burning with rage, her scent hit me like a punch… Raw, untamed, and powerful.
Thane, my wolf growled with high alert, his excitement noticeable as he roared within, “And her scent is the strongest I have ever encountered.”
I stood paralyzed with shock. My lips managed to whisper her name but the remaining words stuck in my throat. Elena, the fragile quiet girl in my class, was a werewolf?! My mind raced.
“Hey! Are you alright?” Her voice snapped me back to reality.
I cleared my throat, pushing Thane’s excitement aside.
“Elena…” I began and then the truth spilled out before I could catch it.
“You’re a werewolf.”
An awkward silence fell between us, Elena’s gaze tightening as she stared at me as though I was speaking nonsense, and then she let out a scoff.
“Seriously? You helped me just to make fun of me? I don't have time for this.” With a look of disgust twisting her face, she turned and stormed off.
“Elena!” I called out, hurrying after her. “Just hear me out. You're just like me, a were…”
“Werewolves aren't real!” She turned around sharply facing me, her eyes burning with rage. “What’s wrong with you? If you're trying to pull a prank on me, at least get creative!” Her voice was filled with disdain and I could feel Thane growl in frustration.
“What’s with all these ridiculous fantasies that don't exist? Stay the hell away from me Travis,” she continued and she stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind her.
“You came out too strong Travis. Go easy on her,” Thane rumbled, his voice a low growl. I took in a deep breath and followed her outside.
“Elena, you're right. I shouldn't have said that but let me give you a ride home at least,” I uttered as I caught up with her.
“I said I'm fine!”
“You’re not!” I fired back, my patience exhausted and Thane’s irritation moving through me. I clenched my teeth, pushing him down.
Moving closer, my steps careful and steady, I uttered, “Trust me… this town, Black Hollow isn't a place to wander alone after dark, especially not tonight. Something’s happening tomorrow.”
Silence hung in the air as she stared at me, her eyes squinting in curiosity, then she asked,
“What are you talking about? What’s happening tomorrow?”
