Finally Finished

1799 Words
The final bell rings, signaling the end of the school day. “We just finished our very last first day!” CC squeals with delight. “Yeah. Woohoo,” I reply, forcing myself to smile back at her as I finish tying my shoe. She rolls her eyes at my lame attempt at enthusiasm and grabs her bag from the bench. We head out of the locker room together. When we exit the gymnasium, she looks over at me grinning wickedly and says, “so have you texted him yet?!?” “No, as a matter of fact I have not. I mean I’m sure he’s been busy moving boxes and I’ve been busy with classes, so really I haven’t even had time to think about him.” “Liar!” I glare at her as we make our way through the parking lot. “Okay. So MAYBE I have thought about him a little. But I’m not so desperate that I’m going to text him immediately.” “Okay, but hun? I don’t think he’s going to think that you’re desperate. If anything, he’s probably waiting on the edge of his seat to hear from you.” “Yeah? You think so?” “Definitely. He’s smitten chica. As he should be. You’re a catch!” “Well you’re biased cause you love me. But alright, I’ll text him now.” I slide my phone out of my back pocket right as we reach my car. I double check the note Gabriel left with his number, and quickly create a new contact for him. Now all I have to do is decide what to say to him. I must have been staring down at my phone for several minutes because CC has already gotten my keys, cranked the car, put her bag in the back seat, hooked her phone to the cassette adapter to put on her music, and is now leaning against the outside of my car frowning at me. “Well?” “Uhh, well what?” “What did you say to him?” “Umm, I haven’t actually said anything yet.” “Ahh, so that’s what that look is for.” “What look?” “You’re totally looking at your phone like it’s the worlds most complicated puzzle.” “I am not!” As soon as I hear myself say this and see CC raise her eyebrow at me, I realize just how terrible of a lie it is. I sigh deeply and continue, “okay, well yeah. I guess I’m kind of nervous to text him.” She steps up next to me and bumps her shoulder against mine lightly. “Just be your amazing self. Say what you want to say. You don’t have to think so hard about it.” “Yeah, you’re right. I’ll just.. I’ll just start our game! It seems like he’s the kind of guy that I can just jump into things with.” “There ya go! Perfect. So text him aaaaand, let’s go” Trying not to give it too much thought, I look back at my phone and begin my message to Gabriel. ‘Hey, so I’m going to start out with an easy one.. where are you from?’ I press send, make sure the sound is on so I can hear if he responds, and tuck my phone back into my jeans. “Alright, let’s go!” I say to CC as I walk over to the drivers door. She comments, “finally! I thought we would be in this parking lot forever. And we have so much planning to do for our mandatory senior fun.” I shake my head at her a laugh. “Right, senior fun! Let’s get to it lady!” I exclaim as we both enter the car. We decide to start our planning at the local Whataburger. And by ‘we decide’ what I really mean is I told CC that if I had to take part in mandatory planning for mandatory fun, then it was also mandatory that I get more food. And she never turns down the opportunity to eat some good fries, so we end up there. We’re sat at a table, facing each other with a big basket of fries in between us. I’ve also got a burger and a vanilla milkshake and CC has a chocolate milkshake that she is currently dipping a fry into. She’s highjacked my cellphone to save some event reminders. As I’m looking through my calendar I see reminders for spirit week: pajama day, character day, wacky Wednesday, team day, and school spirit and pep rally. There’s a senior skip day saved as well as a CC skip day. There are several sporting events and dances. There are even some volunteer days and college fairs. “So, I know that I agreed to help you achieve the average high school experience.. but CC? This seems a little excessive.” I look at her across the table and she is just smiling widely. She replies slowly and drawn out, “mandatory ..senior .. FUN!” I sigh deeply and take another bite of my burger as she continues, “yes, it may SEEM like a lot when you look at it all like that. BUT, this is our last year together! And I just need to make as many memories to take with me to Texas as I can. So, yes. We are going to do a lot together this year. And you are going to thank me for it next year when you’re going crazy from missing my excessive ass!” At this last exclamation, I almost tear up. She’s right. Of course, she’s almost always right. In an attempt to bring things back to a lighter tone, I jokingly tease her by saying, “you’re right ..You’re ass IS a bit excessive.” I wiggle my eyebrows and laugh at my own joke. CC throws a fry at me and we get back to going over our plans for the year ahead. Once we’ve finished our food and I’ve filled in her calendar with some mandatory chill days to balance it out a bit, my phone chimes. I look down at the screen and see that Gabriel has texted me back. When I look back up towards where CC was sitting to tell her that he texted, I realize she’s not there. Instead of sitting across the table in front of me, she has hurried out of her chair and squatted down directly beside me. “Is it him? What did he say? And what took him so long to reply? Did he profess his love for you?” “Jeez, slow down!” I say chuckling towards her. “I haven’t even opened it yet. Plus, don’t you need to get home?” “What? Why are you trying to change the subject Jules?” “I’m not. I just noticed what time it was and realized we probably need to get home for dinner.” CC raises her eyebrows at me questioningly. It’s the kind of look that says she is 100% ready to call me on my bills hit if I don’t just tell her what’s going on. I sigh deeply and say, “alright. Yeah. I guess I’m just being a little possessive. I don’t know.. I mean I want to read it, but I just want to read it on my own.” CC lightens her look and seems like she’s about to say something, but I cut her off. “Of course I’ll tell you all about it.. after. I just want him to myself for now I think.” “Okay Jules. You don’t have to explain. You can just tell me how you’re feeling and I won’t push it, you know that.” “I do. My feelings and thoughts are just all a little messed up right now. I’m blaming hormones.” At that, we both laugh and get our stuff together to leave. I listen to CC talk about several movies that I just ‘have’ to watch while I’m driving her home. I’m honestly thankful for the distraction. Once I drop her off at her house, I’ve got about a seven minute drive to mine. I keep thinking about opening the text from Gabriel. I wonder what he said. I wonder what he did today. I wonder if he got all sweaty moving boxes and maybe took his shirt off. I start thinking about what his bare chest might look like. What it might feel like beneath my fingers. How his body is probably tight and lean and warm. How I would love to be pressed against it. My core begins to throb just thinking about him again. I press my legs together and try to focus on driving. As soon as I get to my house I’ll open it. As I turn onto our street I notice a strange car parked in the driveway where I usually would park my Rabbit. I guess my parents are having someone over for dinner. I pull in front of the house and park on the street. I turn my car off and pull out my phone, finally allowing myself to look at the message from Gabriel. It looks like he sent me two messages. Not trying to ignore your question, but are your parent’s name’s Sarah and Tim? I think for a second about how strange it is for him to ask me that, and how strange it is that he is right. And then I see the next message, Your room is not at all what I imagined, mi amor ;) I gasp audibly and look back to my house. Gabriel is in my house. Gabriel is in my room. My heart flutters, slightly from nerves and slightly from the excitement of being able to see him again. I grab my things and almost run to the front door.
