As I make my way towards the woods at the edge of the property, I glance back at the building. Cloudcroft High School. A place I really did not want to go. What I thought would be the low point of my stay in this town. Somewhere that turned out to be my favorite place on Earth.
The goddess saw fit to bless me with my mate only a month after I turned eighteen. I must have done something right in a past life, because most of the wolves I know had to wait years to find theirs. Sure, some of the guys are content messing around with a bunch of randoms, but that’s never been my way.
My father, the Alpha of our pack back home, always taught me that to be truly powerful and complete, you need to find your missing half; your mate. He found my mom, our Luna, when he was forty-three. And since he marked her as his, our pack has been the strongest in Central America.
As the heir to the Southern Spokane Pack, it is my responsibility to carry on his legacy. You see, my father, Alpha Javier, has a reputation. When he took over the pack, he changed some long standing, and barbaric practices. Previously, our females, excluding the Luna, could not hold positions of power in the pack (Beta, Omega, etc.). Women were lower down in the ranks despite their ability to fight. He also changed the practice of becoming Alpha. We no longer fight for dominance. Which is why I am in this town in the first place.
In order to prove myself worthy of leading the pack, I have to first lead a take down of another pack. One that mistreats it’s members. Although my father uses his position of power for good, there are other Alphas who abuse their pack. They torture any members who don’t please them. They consider their females worthless, except to breed. They are cruel and verbally and physically abuse their females. They go around starting fights with other packs over nothing, and then abandon their members, leaving them to die if the other pack turns out to be stronger.
There have been rumors that the pack here, in New Mexico, is like this. The members are scared and abused and won’t talk to outsiders, so I have been sent to confirm these rumors and potentially take down the alpha. His name is Chris, and he’s meant to have a meeting today with the human’s sheriff that I want to follow. From what my dad heard, he’s using his pack members to run drugs and distributing them to the humans here.
Usually wolves have no interest in drugs, as they don’t affect us, but sometimes there will be a bad egg that just wants the quick buck they can get from selling. Where I am from, that’s a big no-no. We don’t take advantage of the humans or put them in harms way. It puts our kind in unnecessary risk.
So even though I’m feeling anxious being away from Jules, I need to focus on the task at hand. I tear my gaze away from the school, and my mate inside, and head into the woods.
I stashed an empty bag behind a large oak tree this morning. As I reach the tree, I scan the area around me to make sure that nothing and no one is there to notice my shift. I strip out of my clothes and pack them neatly in the bag. I roll my neck and sigh happily as I let my wolf take over.
For the average wolf, shifting can be painful and take quite a long time. For me, as the son of an Alpha, it’s the opposite. It’s exhilarating. My transformation happens in the blink of an eye and my wolf shivers with the excitement of being free. He takes a moment to stretch out his large fur covered legs and then takes off.
He stops abruptly at the edge of the woods facing the school, whining softly. “We can’t go back to her just yet,” I think to my wolf. He growls, clearly upset that he cannot storm up and mark her. “We need to get to this meeting between Alpha Chris and the sheriff, and as soon as we are done, I will check on her.” He whines again. “No, she isn’t ready to meet you just yet. She smelled as though she had never shifted herself. I could barely smell her wolf, and the way she reacted to me, I’m not sure what she knows of our kind. We’ll have to go slow with her.” I tell him, attempting to calm him.
He huffs one last time and finally pulls away from the woods. We head to the meeting. I’m hoping that we get some good intel from listening in so that I can spend most of this trip with her. I have a feeling that if I’m not able to mark her soon, my wolf will go crazy.
