Grey. Everything is grey and blurry and moving speedily around me. No, its not moving around me. I recognize that I am running. In fact, I am moving quicker and with more ease than I ever have before.
I pause, breathing in deeply. The smell of pine and oak, and the sound of branches moving in the breeze is almost overwhelming.
It is then that I realize that I can see extremely well, despite the intense dark that the cover of the forest in the night provides. And everything around me is not grey. I am instead surrounded by vivid greens and more shades of brown than I ever knew existed.
I walk slowly to a small pool of cerulean water and glance down expecting to see my reflection. What I see instead is a large auburn wolf with confused eyes that are the same olive green as my own. I open my mouth, only to see the wolf do the same. I left my hand, only to see a large paw in its place.
A small scream escapes from my maw, and I take a swift, startled step backwards. As I do, I bump into something very solid. I whip my massive wolf head around and see a set of mocha eyes staring back at me. They belong to the most beautiful man I have ever seen.
He smiles up at me, and holds his hand out while speaking gentle, comforting words that flow from his sensuous mouth like velvet. “Shh, mi amor. Everything is okay.”
I wake, bolting upright. My heart is hammering, my long auburn hair clings to my face, and I struggle to regulate my breathing. “Woah,” I speak aloud.
That was so strange. I now know that I was dreaming, but that dream felt so real. I mean, of course it couldn’t have been real. In the dream I was a giant wolf! ..and the man in the dream was to perfect to exist. Although, I am now stuck with this weird feeling of being, I don’t know ..incomplete, with his absence. “Hmpff,” I huff to myself.
I peer at the alarm clock on my desk, which reads 6:55. It is set to go off in two minutes, so to avoid that headache-of-a-noise, I reach over and turn it off.
My limbs are sore from the night of heavy sleeping and strange dreams. I push aside my comforter and stretch, easing that soreness out.
Today is my last first day of school. Not to be too cliché, but it is definitely bittersweet. On the one hand, no more school! I have always excelled at school and don’t doubt that I will graduate at the top of my class, but I have never enjoyed it. And though my adoptive parents were super supportive when I told them I didn’t want to go to college, I still feel like I will be disappointing them by not going.
On the other hand, I will have to actually figure out what I am going to do with my life. Past the whole not-going-to-college thing, I have no idea what I want my future to hold.
I still have the remainder of this year to figure it out. That’s what I tell myself as I go through the motions to get ready for the day.
By 7:35, I am downstairs grabbing an apple and granola bar from the kitchen pantry to eat on the way to school.
“Heading out Mom. I’ll see you after school,” I shout towards her office at the front of the house.
“Goodbye Jules, have a fantastic day sweetheart!” she replies, and I step outside to leave.
