When I emerged from the bathroom, I thought Clark would be in the bed waiting for me to explain my behavior. But he wasn’t. Instead, I heard his voice down the hall. I stuck my head out the bedroom door and gathered my dowdy gown in my fists. Was he upset? I hadn’t meant to tease him. As guilt roiled in my stomach, I tiptoed closer to the girl’s rooms and peeked in, inhaling sharply at the heartwarming scene. Clark was leaning over Maya’s bed. “Wake up, sunshine,” he gently rubbed her back. Brooke was already up and wiping her eyes, but with tender patience, Clark continued to coo Maya into greeting the new day. His gentleness was absolutely beautiful to see.
