JAX
There was no one in the room.
"You there!" I called to the guard patrolling the corridor. He came running up to me. "Where is the woman that was found this evening?"
The guard looked into the room, frowned.
He swallowed nervously as he faced me.
"Alpha, Aradia gave her a potion and said she would be sleeping for at least an hour," he said. "She- she was here just ten minutes ago."
I crooked a finger at the guard. He came closer. Quick as a flash, I grabbed his throat and lifted him off the ground.
"She might be a spy and you let her escape? Find her right now or die in her place," I said quietly.
I threw the struggling guard on the floor. Coughing and gagging, he stumbled to his feet and ran down the stairs, calling out to the other guards.
Ten minutes!
She could be anywhere now after getting her hands on whatever information she had come for.
If she wasn't found, all the guards on duty tonight were as good as dead.
Gritting my teeth, I was walking along the corridor when a movement caught my eye.
Quietly, I moved forward and when I got close enough, I could only stop and stare.
Someone had left a window in the corridor open. Through it I could see the full moon shining brightly in the sky.
But that was not what made me stare.
Standing by the window and bathed in the soft, silvery light of the moon, was a woman with long hair, dark as a raven's wing, which trailed on the floor behind her.
What she was doing was stranger.
She appeared to be trying to force herself out of the window- even though this was the second floor- and then, she actually seemed to be trying to grab hold of the moon.
I was stunned.
"Alpha," gasped a voice from behind me. "Alpha, we can't- There she is!"
"I can see that," I said without turning.
The woman appeared not to have heard us.
"Alpha, should I-" began the guard as he took a step forward.
"No," I said, putting up my hand.
The woman froze, suddenly turned. In that moment, I could have sworn that time stood still.
First, there was her lips; full, coral pink. Her face, oval and perfectly shaped, framed by that mass of hair.
Then there were her eyes. They were a startling shade of green, deep as pools. I had the eerie feeling that if I stared at them too long, I would drown.
I felt like I was floating out of my body. Then she stepped away from the direct beam of the moonlight and the illusion was gone.
The guard behind me breathed in short, sharp pants. He was staring at her like he was in a trance.
"Leave," I said and it took a few moments for my orders to him to sink in.
The woman and I stared at each other for a long moment when he had gone, walking by the sound of it, a little unsteadily.
On some level, I could still hear the calls and shouts of the guards searching for her.
It was probably best to get her out of sight before I began questioning her now that I understood why she could be so... distracting to others.
But definitely not to me, I told myself fiercely.
I was the master of control!
I pointed to the door of the room she had left. "Get in there."
She cast a frightened glance at me, at the door but obeyed.
Under the electric lights, she was pale, almost as white as the bandage wrapped around her arm. I remembered what Cade had said about her loosing a lot of blood.
"What were you doing out there?" I asked her, shutting the door. "Were you trying to escape?"
"Home," she said, and I received another slight shock. Her voice sounded like the tinkle of little bells. Her eyes clouded with tears. She looked out of the window at the sky for a long moment. She bit the corner of her lip. "I want to go home."
"Where is your home?" I said, clenching my fists and trying to crush the sudden urge to take her lip between mine and roll them between my tongue.
She glanced at me, back at the sky, shook her head, sending teardrops as clear as tiny diamonds, flying.
"I don't know," she said.
"You don't know? How about telling me your name and how the hell you got to my pack?"
"I- I don't know," she repeated in a low voice. "I just woke up... out there and I was scared."
I raised a brow. If this girl wasn't a spy and pretender, then she was probably crazy. Maybe she had escaped from a mental hospital.
I took a step towards the door. Being this close to her was doing things to me, things I didn't want to think about. I suddenly wanted to be away from her.
But then I decided I had to get some information first.
"Now listen," I said. "This is your last chance to tell me the truth. If I find out you're lying to me, you die. Don't think you being female would matter to me."
"I'm not lying," she said with a whimper. "I can't remember anything else-"
She paused as a gust of wind blew into the room. It blew the loose silk gown she wore against her skin.
She looked down at the gown as if surprised to find herself wearing it. From her reaction to it, one would think she had never worn clothes before.
Suddenly, with an impatient movement, she tugged at the sleeve. The flimsy material tore.
She casually stepped out of the gown and promptly seemed to forget my presence as she wandered over to the window naked as the day she born!
For an instant, I had caught a glimpse of her bare breasts. The sight set my blood on fire.
I knew what this was now.
She must be one of the princesses from a pack sent to seduce me into marrying her.
When would they learn that I didn't give a damn about women? Their bodies were just tools for pleasure. Nothing more.
"I know your game," I said, slowly closing the distance between us. Her hair whipped around. Her eyes widened at the look in my eyes. "Like the others, you were sent here to try to seduce me into marrying you, right? You're the princess of what pack? Fireheart? Whitefang? You won't tell?"
I brushed a lock of hair away from her face, ran a hand down her back. She shivered.
Her lips parted, her eyes locked on my lips. She wanted me too. I could see that.
"So the amnesia and the fake innocence is all a trick, right?" I said. "You got me there for a moment though. None of the others have ever taken their clothes off so quickly. But what I would like to know is how the hell you got past my security and onto the estate."
She was panting now, in soft tiny breaths.
I took another step closer. My head swam with the sweet scent of her. Her eyes drifted close as I leaned in. She was gasping, panting, wanting more.
I saw her n*****s peak, harden and it was all I could do to stop myself from crushing her to me and burying myself inside her. She rocked forward.
Now her lips were inches away from mine.
I stepped back. Her eyes flew open.
"You little fool," I said, angry that my voice shook a little. My already straining erection gave a violent throb. "Did you really think I was going to kiss you?"
If she wasn't so pale, she would have blushed with shame.
Her eyes flashed with anger.
"Get out!" she cried.
"Get on that sofa and let's do what you really came here for," I ordered. "When I'm done screwing you, you can go tell the bloody i***t who put you up to this that your plan didn't work. Then again, I might just decide to lock you in my dungeon and get rid of you with the rest. Depends on how well you please me. Now get on the sofa."
She did the exact opposite. She ran for the door.
I grabbed her arm.
She drew back her hand and slapped me. Hard. The sound echoed in the room.
Looking back now, I realized I didn't think at that moment. I just acted.
The dagger jumped into my hand and was at her throat in a flash.
