The Necklace Awakens

1177 Words
The shrill sound of my alarm pulled me completely awake. For a few moments, I simply lay in bed, staring at the white ceiling of the hotel room. The dream lingered in my mind with unsettling clarity. The castle. The silver-eyed man. The unfinished portrait. And the voice... "Elena... Elizabeth..." I rubbed my temples, trying to shake away the lingering unease. "It was only a dream," I whispered to myself. Yet somehow, I didn't believe my own words. I sat up abruptly, my heart still pounding from the dream. Instinctively, my hand flew to my neck. The cold metal brushed against my fingertips. The necklace. My breath caught in my throat. "I never took it off..." With trembling hands, I unclasped the silver chain and quickly slipped it from my neck. The crimson gemstone seemed to shimmer for a brief second in the morning light before becoming completely still. I opened the small wooden box, carefully placed the necklace inside, and shut the lid with a firm click. "No more," I whispered. "I've had enough strange experiences." I wrapped the box in a spare sweater and tucked it deep inside my travel bag, making sure it was hidden beneath my clothes. Only then did the tightness in my chest begin to ease. Taking a long, steady breath, I got out of bed. Whatever had happened in that castle... Whatever the dream had meant... I wasn't ready to face it again. To clear my mind, I rolled out the small yoga mat I always carried while traveling. Stretching helped calm my racing thoughts. The steady rhythm of breathing slowly eased the tension in my body. After finishing my morning routine, I picked up the hotel phone and ordered breakfast. "A cup of hot tea, please... and the English breakfast set." "It will be ready in about twenty minutes, ma'am." "Thank you." While waiting, I stepped into the bathroom. The warm shower washed away the exhaustion from yesterday's adventure. I brushed my teeth, tied my damp hair into a loose ponytail, and changed into comfortable clothes. Just as I finished, someone knocked on the door. "Room service." I opened it and accepted the tray with a grateful smile. The aroma of freshly brewed tea instantly lifted my mood. I sat beside the window, quietly enjoying my breakfast while watching the morning sunlight spread across the distant mountains. For the first time since entering Burgi Forest... I felt peaceful. After finishing my meal, I reached into my travel bag and carefully removed the small wooden box. It felt heavier than I remembered. Slowly, I opened it. The silver necklace rested inside exactly as I had left it. Its crimson gemstone shimmered faintly beneath the morning light. Beautiful. Dangerous. Without thinking, I instinctively reached toward it. Then I stopped. "No." I closed my hand into a fist. "I've had enough strange experiences for one lifetime." Yesterday I had entered an abandoned castle. I had found a mysterious necklace. I had heard voices. And last night's dream had felt more real than reality itself. Whether all of it had been supernatural or simply the result of stress... I wasn't ready to find out. I gently closed the box. "I need time," I whispered. "If mystical things really exist... if there's another world hidden behind this one... I don't want to rush into it." I let out a nervous laugh. "Maybe I'm just overthinking everything." That explanation sounded much safer. Within half an hour, I had packed my belongings. I checked out of the hotel, thanked the receptionist, paid my bill, and walked toward the parking lot. My car waited exactly where I had left it. As I drove away from the mountains, Burgi Forest gradually disappeared in the rearview mirror. Even after it vanished from sight... I couldn't stop thinking about it. A little later, I stopped at a supermarket on the edge of the city. I picked up groceries for the week. Fresh vegetables. Milk. Bread. Coffee. A few packets of instant noodles. Chocolate. Some toiletries and household supplies. Ordinary things. Comfortingly ordinary. The cashier smiled politely as she scanned my purchases. "That'll be seventy-three euros." I paid, thanked her, and pushed the cart toward the parking lot. Halfway there... A strange sensation crawled up my spine. Someone was watching me. I stopped walking. Slowly, I turned around. People moved in every direction. Families. Students. An elderly couple. A delivery driver unloading boxes. Nothing unusual. Still... The uneasy feeling refused to disappear. I quickly loaded the groceries into the back seat. Before getting into the driver's seat, I glanced around one last time. No one. As I drove away, I kept checking the rearview mirror. Again. And again. No car remained behind me for long. No motorcycle followed. No shadow lingered. Eventually I exhaled. "You're becoming paranoid, Elena." Perhaps everything was simply in my imagination. The familiar streets of my neighborhood finally appeared. The moment my house came into view, a wave of relief washed over me. Home. Safe. Normal. I unlocked the front door and stepped inside. The quiet embrace of my small house instantly calmed my nerves. I switched on the lights. Placed the grocery bags on the kitchen counter. Carried my travel bag upstairs to my bedroom. Then I collapsed onto the bed with a deep sigh. "I definitely made the right decision by refusing that camping trip." If I had stayed another night in Burgi Forest... Who knew what might have happened? Or perhaps... Who I might have met. The thought sent a shiver through me. I decided I deserved a relaxing evening. I filled the bathtub with steaming hot water. The bathroom slowly filled with fragrant lavender-scented steam. I unwrapped a bath bomb and dropped it into the water. It fizzed happily, turning the water a soft violet. Perfect. I slipped into the warm bath and closed my eyes. Every sore muscle slowly relaxed. The stress of the last two days seemed to melt away. For twenty peaceful minutes... Everything felt normal again. Afterward, I rinsed off under a cool shower, dried my hair, and changed into an oversized T-shirt and comfortable shorts. I walked downstairs, connected my phone to the speakers, and played my favorite playlist. Soft music filled the house. Smiling to myself, I began preparing dinner while humming along to the song. For the first time since leaving the forest... I truly believed everything was over. I didn't notice the wooden box sitting silently on my bedroom desk. I didn't see the faint crimson glow escaping through the tiny gap beneath its lid. Inside... The silver necklace had begun to pulse like a living heartbeat. Once. Twice. Then the gemstone flashed with an eerie crimson light. A whisper, too soft for human ears, drifted through the empty room. "...She has returned." Far away... Beyond mountains, forests, and centuries of forgotten history... Inside the ancient castle... The silver-eyed man slowly opened his eyes. A faint smile appeared on his lips. "At last..." His voice echoed through the empty throne room. "The necklace has awakened."
