All I knew was the weight of Ani’s hand in mine—cold, limp, frighteningly still—and the faint glow pulsing weakly under her skin whenever Jennifer’s power surged into her. The room was dim, so they kept the light to a bare minimum so Esmeralda could light different candles for her magic, but she had finally collapsed in the corner, her head tipped forward, her dark curls serving as a pillow.
