Beyond the Border

The howl echoed through the night. Long.Deep. Ancient. It wasn't the cry of an ordinary wolf. Every warrior inside the Blackwood home stiffened. The wounded messenger's face drained of color. "Another one..." he whispered. Then a second howl answered from somewhere deeper within the Forbidden Forest. A third followed. The sound rolled across the mountains like distant thunder "They're gathering," Gareth muttered. Elder Magnus's warning from years ago flashed through Lyra's mind. "When the rogues howl together... no wolf crosses the border." The messenger forced himself back onto his feet despite the blood soaking through his uniform. "The Elders are ordering every gate sealed. No one leaves. No one enters. He looked directly at Lyra. "...Except her." Silence filled the room. Elara stepped protectively in front of her daughter. "She's leaving at sunrise." The messenger lowered his gaze. "The order has changed." Gareth frowned. "What do you mean?""The council fears the omen." His voice became quieter. "They want her beyond the borders before midnight." Lyra's heart sank. Midnight? She had barely two hours. "They're afraid," she murmured. The messenger didn't answer. He didn't have to. Everyone understood. The Moonstone Altar had cracked. Her name had appeared upon it. Whatever had happened at the ceremony had terrified the Elders. And terrified wolves made dangerous decisions. An hour later, Lyra stood at the front gate of her childhood home. The leather satchel rested over her shoulder. The silver necklace lay hidden beneath her cloak. She looked back one last time. The small house seemed smaller than she remembered. Its stone walls had sheltered her laughter. Its windows had witnessed her tears. She would probably never see it again. Her father stood in the doorway with folded arms. He said nothing. Neither goodbye... Nor stay safe. Only silence. Her mother rushed forward before the guards could object. She wrapped Lyra in one final embrace. "Whatever happens..." Elara whispered through tears. "Don't lose your kindness." Lyra closed her eyes. "I'll miss you." "I'll miss you every day." The guards cleared their throats impatiently. "It's time." Elara slowly released her. Before stepping away, she tucked a loose strand of Lyra's hair behind her ear just as she had done when Lyra was a little girl. Then she smiled. It was heartbreaking. Because both of them knew it was a smile meant to hide unbearable grief. Lyra turned before she could change her mind. She refused to look back again. Four armed warriors escorted her through the sleeping village. Only it wasn't truly asleep. Windows glowed with candlelight. Faces watched from behind curtains. Doors remained shut. No one spoke. No one offered comfort. The village that had raised her had already erased her existence. As they reached the enormous northern gate, Lyra noticed nearly fifty warriors waiting. Far too many for a simple exile. Captain Roland stepped forward. "The council has ordered us to escort you to the border." Lyra raised an eyebrow. "You need fifty warriors for one woman?" His jaw tightened. "We're not protecting you."He glanced uneasily toward the dark forest beyond the walls. "We're protecting ourselves." The massive iron gates creaked open. Beyond them stretched the Forbidden Forest. Ancient trees twisted toward the sky like skeletal fingers. Dense mist clung to the ground. Moonlight barely reached beneath the thick branches. No birds sang. No insects chirped. Only silence. The kind of silence that warned predators were nearby.Captain Roland stopped at the first stone marker. "This is the border." He pointed into the darkness. "You are forbidden from returning." "If you cross back into Silver Moon territory..."His expression hardened. "You will be executed." Lyra stared at him. Not long ago these men had saluted her as their future Luna. Now they threatened her life. Funny how quickly loyalty changed. She nodded once. "I understand." Without another word, she crossed the border. The moment her foot touched the forest floor...The silver necklace beneath her shirt became warm. Not painfully.Comfortingly. Almost...As though someone had taken her hand. She instinctively reached for it. The crystal glowed faintly before fading once more. Behind her, the gates slammed shut. The sound echoed through the mountains. Home was gone. For several minutes, Lyra simply walked. She had no destination. Only forward. The deeper she ventured into the forest, the colder the air became. Mist curled around her ankles.Every snapping twig made her heart race. She had read stories about this place.Rogue wolves.Mad beasts. Spirits that lured travelers into endless circles. Most were probably exaggerated.Probably. A sudden rustling froze her in place. Something moved behind the trees. Large. Fast. She gripped the hunting knife her mother had packed. "Who's there?" No answer. Only silence. Then another rustle. Closer this time. Her pulse quickened. She slowly backed away. A pair of glowing yellow eyes appeared between the trees. Then another. And another.Five pairs. No...Seven.Huge wolves emerged from the darkness.Their fur was matted with dried blood.Scars covered their massive bodies.Unlike ordinary werewolves, these creatures walked on all fours. Foam dripped from their jaws. Their eyes held no intelligence.Only hunger.Rogues.One growled. Another circled behind her. Lyra's breathing became shallow. She couldn't outrun them. She couldn't fight seven rogue wolves. The largest beast stepped forward. It sniffed the air. Then suddenly stopped. Its ears flattened. It stared directly at the necklace hidden beneath Lyra's cloak. A low whine escaped its throat. The other rogues reacted the same way.Confusion replaced bloodlust."What...?" Lyra whispered. The necklace grew warmer. A faint silver glow seeped through the fabric of her cloak. The wolves backed away. One even lowered its head. Not in submission. In fear. Then— CRACK! A branch snapped behind them. Every rogue spun toward the sound.A powerful growl rolled through the forest. Unlike the rogues' savage snarls, this growl carried authority.Command. The rogue wolves tucked their tails instinctively. One by one...They fled. Within seconds the clearing was empty. Lyra stood frozen. Someone else was here. She slowly turned toward the darkness. Nothing. Only mist. "Thank you..." Her voice barely rose above a whisper. No answer came. Yet she couldn't shake the feeling she was being watched. Not by a predator.By a guardian.Hidden high among the branches of an ancient oak, a lone figure observed the clearing with piercing ice-blue eyes. A silver wolf stood silently beside him. "The mark..." the man murmured. His Beta landed lightly beside him. "So it really is her?" The man never looked away from Lyra. "Yes." "What now, Your Majesty?" Alpha King Rowan Frost watched the young woman disappear deeper into the forest. For the first time in years, uncertainty crossed his normally calm face. "We follow." "But we do not reveal ourselves." "Not yet." Far below, Lyra continued walking alone, unaware that every step she took carried her closer to a destiny that would change the werewolf world forever.
