Chapter eight

Immediately, I took out the bullet that had gone into him. His wound closed up immediately. I took off his shirt and watched him sleep. “Silas, so that's your name,” I said in a low tone, his hand covering his left hand. I watched his chest heave. What were the odds that he was the man I would marry? My heart raced with excitement, shock, confusion—a mix of emotions that would make a person go mad. I had wiped the blood from my hand, but there was still some on my wedding dress. But I didn't care. It was his blood. “Silas,” his name wouldn't stop coming out of my mouth. “It's been hours. You should go to sleep, ma'am,” Selene said. I shook my head. “I can't rest if I'm not looking after him.” “Actually... it's for your own good. The Alpha King doesn't like it when people touch him without his consent. You are his wife, but... you could get beheaded. You do not even know the man.” I looked at her, unsure if I should tell her that I had met him before. But did she have to know that? Was she somebody I could completely trust not to tell anybody? “Thank you,” my voice was calm, and I pulled away. “Beheading?” I thought as I moved to a couch to lie down. He would do that to a person only for touching him? I slumped into the chair and arched my back. Selene moved to a different chair and lay on it as well. She fell asleep before me. My eyes were fixed on him as I slept. I'm actually married to him. I couldn't believe it. Why shoot him? Why didn't he come in through the front door like he deserved to? What is up with this man? Why were there so many mysteries about him? THE NEXT MORNING, I felt a repeated tap on my arm, which forced me out of my sleep. My eyes sprang open. The sun had risen, and the curtains were pulled open, allowing the light to come into the room. I looked up immediately and rushed to the bed. He was still sleeping, but was now covered by a duvet. “He's still not awake?” my tone lowered with disappointment. A loud knock suddenly came at the door, and my head flung toward it. “The Alpha King's guard is here,” she rushed to me. “The Alpha King's guard is here.” “The one you are in love with?” Her expression tightened. “Don't say that in front of him.” The knock came louder. “Your Highness?!” “That's him. If he finds the Alpha King unconscious, we could get in trouble,” she explained. I thought for a second and looked back. Suddenly, an idea struck. I quickly slid off my wedding dress, leaving myself in lingerie. I rushed into bed and lay beside Silas. “He would think we were on our honeymoon, and he is still asleep.” Selene shakily picked up the clothes and tossed them into a basket. The knock grew louder as she rushed to the door and opened it. A man walked in, almost the same height as Silas. He was dressed in a fresh suit and tie. His hair was blond, and he had brown eyes. His eyes moved to the bed immediately. Selene bowed her head. “They are still in bed. I'm sure they need some privacy,” she said. He didn't take a single glance at her. His footsteps were gentle as he walked toward us. I leaned against Silas, placing my head on his chest. “Problems?” He brought two fingers to Silas' nose to check if he was still breathing. Selene and I exchanged glances. She bit her lower lip and bowed her head again. “Your Highness,” he gently tapped Silas' shoulder, but Silas didn't wake up. Before I could ask him to leave, he reached for the duvet and yanked it off. “Hey!” I shouted in response. Why would he do that? Did he suspect anything? “He's unconscious,” he growled. His arm wrapped around me, and he pulled me up from the bed like I weighed nothing. He wrapped his fingers around my neck and pressed tighter, pinning me against the wall. I parted my lips and gasped as I felt sharp claws against my skin. Selene quickly dropped to her knees. “This is our new Luna. You can't do that. Please stop,” she pleaded shakily. “Why is the Alpha King unconscious? What did you do to him?” he squeezed tighter around my neck. “I... I didn't do anything,” I choked. “He's hurt. I can smell it,” he growled. “Please, let her go. She saved his life last night. She didn't want us to tell anybody, and I don't know why,” Selene spoke. His eyes narrowed on me. “You...” He slowly let go. “Did you save him?” I nodded. My fingers moved to my neck, and I gently rubbed it. “Yes,” I choked. “He has healed now but is still unconscious.” His eyes narrowed. “Why didn't you take him outside to the doctors?” “Oh no,” I quickly waved my hands in the air. “Last time we met, he was injured as well. He's a secretive person. I don't think he wants people to know. Also, he came in through the fence. That shows he doesn't want to be seen.” “You guys met?” he asked, puzzled. I gave a slow nod. “Where would you have met the Alpha King?” Selene slowly stood up from the ground as she asked, her eyes filled with puzzlement. “It's you,” the guard said before I could speak. “You are Lyra... right?” I gave a gentle nod. “He told me about you.” I could see his demeanor relaxing as he spoke. He looked at Silas. “We have to make sure nobody finds out that he is unconscious. You have to stay with him until he wakes up,” he said. I walked to sit near Silas. “What happened to him? Why does he keep getting hurt?” He pressed his lips together. “Maybe it's best if he wakes up and tells you himself... if... he wants to,” he added. “Do not let Aria in here. She can't know as well.” I nodded. “I will leave now. I have an assignment to handle before he wakes up.” He turned around and accidentally bumped into Selene. She gasped and looked up. Her cheeks turned red instantly. She immediately moved away and bowed her head. He adjusted his suit and cleared his throat. “Excuse me,” he said, and walked out of the room. I sank my fingers into his hand and squeezed it. I was sure he would wake up, but I still worried. I sighed, but as I tried to take my hand out, I felt his grip tighten around mine. My brows raised.
