CHAPTER EIGHT _FLAMES IN THE SNOW

791 Words
P.O.V( SCARLETT) The manor glowed under a blanket of freshly fallen snow, each window flickering with candlelight. Outside, the wind howled like an untamed animal, but inside, Blackwood Manor hummed with life—yet tension laced every corner, every shadow. I had learned that no warmth or fire here was ever simple; every flicker of comfort carried the undertone of danger. Breakfast had been quiet, but my mind was restless. Gabriel had left me alone for a time—a rare gesture—and yet, the quiet only made my awareness sharper. Every creak of the floor, every draft of wind, every faint echo of snow striking the windows pulled me toward anticipation and fear simultaneously. I found myself wandering the corridors, drawn to the west wing again, curiosity burning hotter than caution. The storm outside had quieted slightly, leaving a powdery silence that made each footstep seem amplified. Shadows of the towering shelves and ornate furniture seemed alive, whispering secrets I wasn’t meant to hear. “You’re persistent,” a low voice said behind me. I froze. Gabriel appeared as if he had materialized from the shadows themselves. His coat brushed against my arm, heat radiating despite the winter chill. His eyes, gray as steel and sharper than any weapon I had ever seen, fixed on me with an intensity that made my pulse thunder. “I… I was curious,” I admitted, my voice steady though my chest was tight. “I need to understand this place.” He stepped closer, every movement deliberate. “Curiosity comes at a cost, Scarlett. And this manor… it doesn’t forgive mistakes.” I swallowed hard, aware of how dangerously close he was, aware of how much power he wielded—not just in the manor, but over me. Desire and fear intertwined, each heartbeat a drum that echoed in the empty halls. “Do you enjoy testing me?” he asked, voice low, rough with something darker than mere authority. “Maybe,” I whispered, aware that my own boldness surprised me. “Maybe I want to see how far I can go.” A slow, predatory smile curved his lips. “Good,” he murmured. “Because surviving here requires courage. And courage… is seductive when tempered with danger.” Before I could reply, the sound of the front gates echoed—a carriage rolling over snow, heavy and deliberate. Gabriel’s posture stiffened instantly, his eyes narrowing, every instinct alert. “Stay here,” he ordered, hand brushing the small of my back in a gesture that was both protective and possessive. I obeyed, but my pulse leapt. He moved like a shadow through the hallways, disappearing from sight. Minutes passed. Then, I heard voices—strained, unfamiliar, and dangerous. Gabriel returned, guiding two men in coats too fine for their faces to be seen clearly, their posture tense. “These are allies,” he explained briefly, voice low enough that I couldn’t make out the full meaning. “And yet, every ally carries risk. Tonight, they test loyalty. They test control. They test us.” I understood then that Blackwood Manor was more than a home. It was a fortress, a crucible, and I had entered willingly. The depth of Gabriel’s world—the mafia power, the lethal precision, the obsession he demanded—was something I couldn’t fully comprehend. And yet… I wanted to. Later, after the men had departed, the house settled into an uneasy calm. Gabriel led me to the drawing room. Candles flickered, shadows danced across his angular face, and for the first time, he allowed himself a smile—private, dangerous, intimate. “Tonight,” he said softly, stepping closer, “we are alone. And I will teach you a different kind of lesson.” I felt my breath catch. His hand brushed mine—a feather-light touch—and my pulse accelerated. Desire, danger, and heat coiled tightly inside me. I had felt it before, but never like this. Never so tangible, so consuming. “I’m… ready,” I whispered, though I wasn’t certain what I was truly ready for. He leaned in, his lips barely grazing my ear. “You will learn,” he murmured. “And the only way to survive this… is to surrender—to trust… and to want.” The fire crackled beside us, shadows casting our forms in flickering shapes. And in that room, with snow pressing against the windows and the storm’s echo fading into the night, I realized something irrevocable: Blackwood Manor, Gabriel Blackwood, and the storm between us had already claimed me. Desire burned like a secret inferno, as consuming as the snow outside was cold. And I understood that there was no turning back.
