Chapter 6: The First Challenge

1354 Words
Alice Ryan’s computer screen was the only light left in the Executive Administration Department. The office had emptied out an hour ago. Even the cleaning staff had finished their rounds and moved down to the lower floors. Yet Alice stayed sitting on her chair, surrounded by heavy stacks of reports, contracts, and balance sheets. She stretched her aching shoulders, before glancing at the bottom corner of her monitor. 9:17 p.m... "So much for an easy first day," she muttered to the empty room. Taking a sip of the now-cold coffee Mia had brought her hours ago, she dragged her eyes back to the Henderson Project. Every single document had to be sorted, summarized, and reformatted before eight o'clock the next morning. It was an impossible task. At least, anyone else would have called it impossible. But impossible wasn't a word Alice like using She highlighted another dense paragraph, rearranged a dozen tangled spreadsheets, and kept her fingers flying across the keyboard. Behind the dark glass wall of his private office, Raymond Vance hadn't gone home either. He stood with one hand tucked into his trouser pocket, quietly watching Alice through the transparent partition. She hadn't noticed him standing there in the dim light. Good. He preferred it that way. His closest friend and head legal counsel, Daniel Brooks, walked into the office carrying another folder. Daniel looked at Alice's glowing desk, then turned to Raymond with an amused look. "She's still out there, you know." "I have eyes, Daniel." "You really dumped the Henderson Project on her on day one?" "She wanted work. I gave her work." Daniel let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. "Most of your senior managers refuse to touch that file. It’s a complete disaster area." "It needed reorganizing." "It needed a miracle." Daniel folded his arms, leaning back against the edge of the desk. "So... what are you actually trying to prove here?" Raymond looked back out at Alice through the glass. "Nothing." "I have known you for fifteen years, Raymond," Daniel said with a smile. "When you say 'nothing,' it usually means you're trying to prove everything." Raymond let out a quiet sigh. "She challenged me." "So you're punishing her?" "No. I'm testing her." Daniel raised an eyebrow. "Is there really a difference?" "A huge one." Daniel chuckled, taking a step toward the door. "I almost feel sorry for the girl to be honest with you. "Don't," Raymond replied, his steel-gray eyes never leaving Alice's silhouette. "She's stronger than she looks." Another hour dragged by. Alice finally leaned back in her chair, letting out a long, heavy breath. Done. She spent five minutes carefully reviewing every single page one last time. No spelling mistakes. No messy formatting. Everything was sorted into neatly labeled tabs and clear sections. A small, genuine smile touched her lips. "Take that, Raymond Vance." Gathering the neatly arranged folders into her arms, she stood up on stiff legs and walked toward the CEO's double doors. The lights were still burning inside. She knocked twice, her knuckles sounding loud in the quiet hallway. "Come in." Raymond looked up from his laptop. His face was a blank mask, completely unreadable. Alice walked right up to his desk and set the thick folder down with a quiet thud. "The Henderson Project." Raymond looked at his watch. "Ten twenty-three." "You asked for it by tomorrow morning," Alice said, her voice steady. "I finished it tonight." Without saying a word, Raymond pulled the folder toward himself and opened it. Alice stood her ground, waiting. He flipped through page after page, his sharp eyes moving rapidly over her summaries. Budgets, financial charts, contract clauses, meeting minutes.....everything was laid out with crisp, easy precision. The silence in the office grew thick. Finally, Raymond closed the folder with a soft snap. "You corrected three financial discrepancies on page forty." Alice gave a sharp nod. "They didn't match the quarterly balance reports from last spring." "You noticed that?" "They were obvious if you were actually reading the numbers instead of skimming them." A faint, almost invisible touch of a smile tugged at the corner of Raymond's mouth before vanishing completely. "You also reorganized the presentation layout." "The original layout was messy and wasted too much space. The color coding makes the risk factors easier to spot." Another pause stretched between them. Most employees would have just followed his exact orders without questioning anything. Alice hadn't just followed instructions...she had fixed the entire file without being asked. He looked up, meeting her gaze head-on. "Good work, Miss Ryan." Alice blinked, caught completely off guard. Had she heard him right? "The... thank you, sir." Praise was the last thing she expected from him tonight. "You may go home." Alice offered a small, polite nod. "Good night, Mr. Vance." She turned toward the door, taking a step, when his voice cut through the quiet room again. "Miss Ryan." She paused, looking back over her shoulder. "Yes?" "Tomorrow morning. Be here by seven." Her eyes widened slightly. "Seven?" "The board meeting begins at eight. I need the executive briefing prepared beforehand." Alice stared at him, her hands clenching slightly at her sides. "My official work hours start at eight-thirty." "They do," Raymond agreed, closing his laptop. "And yet... I expect you here at seven." Alice bit the inside of her cheek to keep from snapping at him. Was he doing this on purpose? Obviously. She took a slow, deep breath to steady herself. "I'll be here." "Good." Alice walked out into the hallway before her temper could get the better of her. Outside the building, the cool night air hit her face like a slap, waking her up. Alice wrapped her dark blazer tightly around herself as she walked down the quiet street toward the bus stop. Her legs were shaking, her shoulders were stiff, and she was running on pure exhaustion. Her phone buzzed in her purse. It was her best friend, Emma. "Please tell me you're already in bed," Emma said the moment Alice answered. Alice let out a tired, breathless laugh. "I am literally just walking out of the building." "What? Alice, it's after ten o'clock on your first day!" "My boss kept me late with a massive project." Emma groaned dramatically into the receiver. "I already hate this man." "You haven't even met him." "I don't need to meet him to know he's a monster." Alice smiled, feeling a little bit of the stress melt away. "You would probably throw a drink at him if you saw him." "Oh, I definitely would." Alice laughed softly into the quiet night air. "Actually..." "What?" "You kind of already did." Emma frowned on the other end of the line. "Wait, what are you talking about?" Alice froze mid-step near the bus stop. Oops. "Nothing! Forget I said that." "No, no, no. You don't get to drop that and walk away. What do you mean?" Alice sighed, rubbing her forehead. "I will tell you the whole crazy story when we get coffee this weekend." "You better," Emma demanded. "Get home safe!" After hanging up, Alice stopped and turned back to look up at the towering, glass front of the Vance Holdings building. High up on the forty-second floor, one single window remained lit up against the dark sky. Raymond's office. "What kind of person works this late every single night?" she whispered to herself, shaking her head. "Not my problem." She turned away, completely unaware that behind that glowing window, Raymond was standing in the exact same spot she had left him. He stood looking down at the tiny figure walking toward the bus stop far below. For the first time in years, someone had walked into his world, argued with him, crushed his impossible demands, and flat-out refused to be intimidated by his power. A slow, deliberate smile spread across his face in the dark room. "This is going to be very interesting, Miss Ryan." He clicked off the office lights and walked out into the quiet hall, neither of them realizing that their sharp rivalry was already beginning to turn into something more intense.
