BEHIND THE COLD FACADE

1245 Words
The moment Olivia stepped back into the grand Williams estate after the gala, she knew things had changed. The confrontation with Victoria had unsettled her, but more than that, Franklin’s reaction had left her questioning everything. His silence in the car ride home, the way his jaw had been clenched in restraint—it all pointed to one thing: Victoria still had a hold on him. She wasn’t sure why that bothered her as much as it did. Olivia ascended the grand staircase, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. She had barely reached her room when Franklin’s voice cut through the hallway. “Olivia.” She turned to see him standing at the base of the stairs, his expression unreadable. He was still in his tailored tuxedo, the bow tie undone and the top buttons of his shirt loosened. For the first time, he looked less like the unshakable billionaire and more like a man carrying the weight of a past he wasn’t ready to share. “We need to talk.” She hesitated, gripping the banister. “Is this about Victoria?” His eyes darkened. “Come to my study.” Olivia followed him, her heart hammering as he led her into the dimly lit room. Shelves of books lined the walls, and a decanter of whiskey sat untouched on the desk. Franklin poured himself a drink, then turned to her, his gaze searching hers. “What do you want to know?” he asked, his voice quiet but firm. She crossed her arms. “Who is she to you?” He took a slow sip of his drink before answering. “Victoria was a mistake. A lesson in what happens when you trust the wrong person.” Olivia frowned. “That doesn’t tell me much.” Franklin exhaled sharply, running a hand through his dark hair. “She and I were engaged once. It wasn’t love—it was a merger, a strategic alliance between our families. But she had her own plans. She wanted control of my empire, and when she realized she couldn’t manipulate me, she tried to destroy everything I built.” Olivia’s breath caught. “And now she’s back?” “She’s always lurking, waiting for an opportunity to strike.” His jaw tensed. “But I won’t let her.” Olivia studied him, trying to gauge the depth of his emotions. Was it just resentment? Or was there still something lingering beneath the surface? “Do you still care about her?” she asked before she could stop herself. Franklin’s gaze snapped to hers. “No.” She wanted to believe him. But doubts gnawed at her. Silence stretched between them before he finally spoke again. “You handled yourself well tonight. Victoria was trying to rattle you.” “She almost succeeded.” Olivia swallowed. “But I won’t let her get to me.” A ghost of a smile flickered across Franklin’s lips. “Good.” Something shifted in the air between them. A silent understanding. Maybe even something deeper. Olivia wasn’t sure what it meant, but she knew one thing—she wasn’t just a pawn in this game anymore. --- The next few days passed in a whirlwind of public appearances, strategic meetings, and carefully curated moments that kept the media talking. Olivia played her role flawlessly, but the tension between her and Franklin simmered beneath the surface. One evening, as she prepared for a high-profile event, a message flashed across her phone screen. **Anonymous:** *You should ask Franklin what really happened between him and Victoria. You’re only seeing half the truth.* A chill ran down Olivia’s spine. She glanced toward the mirror, her reflection staring back at her with uncertainty. Who had sent the message? And what did they mean? She tucked the phone away and made her way downstairs, where Franklin was waiting. He looked as composed as ever, his hand extended toward her. “You look stunning,” he said, his tone unreadable. Olivia hesitated for just a moment before placing her hand in his. “Thank you.” The car ride to the event was silent, but Olivia’s mind was spinning. Should she confront him? Should she ignore the message? Finally, she turned to him. “Someone sent me a message tonight. They said I should ask you what really happened with Victoria.” Franklin’s expression didn’t change, but she saw the flicker of something—something raw and dangerous—flash across his eyes. “Delete the message,” he said calmly. “And don’t let them get in your head.” “Franklin—” “Drop it, Olivia.” The finality in his tone sent a shiver through her. But Olivia had never been one to back down. If there was more to the story, she would find out. --- The event was extravagant, filled with the city’s most influential figures. Olivia moved through the crowd with practiced ease, smiling and nodding at the right moments. But her mind was elsewhere. Then, she spotted Victoria across the room, watching her with an amused expression. “Care for a little truth?” Victoria said as Olivia approached. Olivia folded her arms. “I’m listening.” Victoria sipped her champagne. “Franklin wasn’t just betrayed by me. He was betrayed by his own family.” Olivia’s breath caught. “What?” Victoria smirked. “His father arranged our engagement. Franklin never had a choice. When he tried to back out, his father threatened to cut him off completely.” Olivia’s heart pounded. “Why are you telling me this?” “Because, darling, you deserve to know the kind of man you’ve married.” Olivia turned away, her mind racing. She needed to hear it from Franklin himself. --- Back at the estate, she stormed into Franklin’s study. He looked up, surprised. “Is it true?” she demanded. “Did your father force you into that engagement?” His expression hardened. “Victoria should learn to keep her mouth shut.” “So it’s true?” Franklin set down his glass. “Yes. My father controlled every aspect of my life. And I spent years breaking free from him.” Olivia’s anger softened into something else—understanding. “You’ve been fighting your whole life, haven’t you?” His gaze met hers, unguarded for once. “Yes.” A heavy silence hung between them before Franklin finally spoke. “I never wanted this marriage to be just another contract.” Olivia’s breath hitched. “Then what do you want?” Franklin stepped closer, his fingers brushing against hers. “I want you, Olivia. Not as a pawn. Not as a contract. Just you.” Emotion swelled in her chest. “Then prove it.” He cupped her face, his thumb tracing her cheek. “I will.” And for the first time, Olivia believed him. --- As dawn broke over the Williams estate, Olivia stood on the balcony, gazing out at the city below. The past few weeks had been a whirlwind, but for the first time, she felt grounded. She felt… home. Franklin wrapped his arms around her from behind, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. “Are you ready for what comes next?” She smiled, leaning into him. “With you? Always.” And just like that, a contract without love had become something neither of them had expected—something real.
