Chapter Nine: Misunderstandings and Shadows Clara’s POV The smooth hum of the car's engine did little to quiet the chaos in my head. Julian drove us to the venue in a comfortable silence, but the moment he pulled up to the entrance, the illusion of peace shattered. Ella was already waiting near the valet. The second she saw Julian’s car, her face lit up, and she hurried over. As soon as he stepped out, she threw her arms around his neck, pulling him into a tight, possessive hug. But the moment her eyes locked onto me stepping out of the passenger side, her warm expression instantly froze into a cold glare. "Julian, come on!" Ella urged, her voice dropping into an overly sweet tone as she caught his arm. "There’s someone inside I have to introduce you to right now. You need to see this." She began pulling him toward the grand entrance, trying to put distance between him and me. Julian hesitated, letting himself be dragged a few steps before stopping to look back over his shoulder at me. "Are you okay on your own for a bit, Clara?" he asked, a trace of concern in his voice. I swallowed the awkwardness rising in my throat and gave him a small, reassuring nod. "Yes, I'm fine. Go ahead." He gave me one last lingering look before letting Ella lead him into the thrumming crowd. I smoothed down my black dress and walked gently into the bustling party hall. The room was suffocating—flashing lights, heavy music, and high-society laughter echoed off the walls. Feeling completely out of place, I glanced around and spotted Julian across the room, already surrounded by people and looking like he was enjoying himself. I didn’t want to be a burden or ruin his night, so I quietly retreated to a vacant chair in a dimmer corner of the hall and sat down. After sitting alone for a few moments, my throat felt dry. I stood up to grab a glass of water from the passing waiters, but as I turned a corner near the lounge area, I bumped directly into Ella. "Where do you think you're going?" she demanded, blocking my path, her eyes narrowing in disgust. I blinked, taking a small step back. "Excuse me?" "Stay away from Julian," she hissed, taking a threatening step into my personal space. "He’s mine, Clara. Don't think for a second that dressing up is going to change that." I stared at her in complete disbelief. My chest ached at how quickly the girl I once called a friend had turned into a venomous stranger. Shaking my head, I turned to walk away from her toxic energy, but Ella grabbed my arm, dragging me back violently. In the sudden struggle, the full cup of dark wine she was holding tilted, splashing directly across the front of her expensive dress and soaking right through the torso of my own black gown. "Ohhh, sorry," Ella gasped in a loud, fake voice, pretending it was a complete accident while holding up her hands. "It slipped." I let out a sharp, bitter hiss of frustration, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a scene. Without saying another word, I turned on my heel and headed straight toward the quiet hallway leading to the restrooms to clean myself up. Back at the pack estate, the atmosphere was suffocatingly quiet. Kaelen paced through the grand sitting room, his sharp eyes sweeping the empty floorboards. The lingering scent of Clara’s soft vanilla perfume was still in the air, but she was nowhere to be found. A subtle ache of guilt tugged at his chest over how he had swept Sienna away earlier, but his pride had kept him from turning around. Unable to shake the restless feeling in his chest, Kaelen called over one of the housemaids. "Where is Clara?" he demanded, his voice low and commanding. "She left a little while ago, Alpha," the maid answered nervously, bowing her head. "She went to the city party with Master Julian." Julian. The name hit Kaelen like a physical strike. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. Without a second thought, he turned and marched straight up the grand staircase to his quarters, grabbing his dark leather jacket. He wasn't going to leave her alone with Julian. As he strode back down toward the main doors, Sienna stepped into the foyer, her eyes instantly landing on his tense posture and the jacket in his hand. "Kaelen? Where are you going?" she asked, her voice instantly turning soft and fragile. "Out," he said curtly, not slowing his pace. "I'm coming with you," Sienna insisted, hurrying to match his long strides. She knew better than to push him when his aura was this dark, but she refused to let him out of her sight. Kaelen didn't have the energy to argue. He gave a sharp nod, unlocked his car, and drove silently into the night toward the party, his grip white-knuckled on the steering wheel. By the time Kaelen and Sienna stepped through the heavy doors of the party hall, Clara was still down the corridor, trying to dab the damp stain out of her dress in the ladies' room. Kaelen’s dominant presence immediately drew glances, but he ignored them all, his sharp eyes scanning the sea of faces for a familiar shock of dark hair. Seeing Ella standing near the bar dabbling at her own dress, Kaelen walked straight up to her. "Where is Clara?" he asked, his voice cutting through the noise of the party. Ella looked up, masking her annoyance behind a smooth, innocent smile. She pointed casually down the quiet, dimly lit corridor. "Oh, Clara? She went toward the restrooms a few minutes ago." Without a word of thanks, Kaelen turned and headed down the quiet hallway. Meanwhile, Clara stepped out of the restroom, drying her hands with a paper towel. She paused in the quiet corridor, startled to find Julian standing a few feet away, waiting for her. "Are you okay?" Julian asked, his eyes sweeping over her damp dress with genuine concern. "Ella told me what happened with the drink." Clara let out a tired sigh, her shoulders slumping. "Yes, I'm sure... but Julian, will you please drive me home? I'm really not comfortable staying here anymore." Julian didn't answer right away. He stepped closer, his intense gaze dropping to her lips. The dim hallway lights cast long shadows over his sharp features, making his handsome face look devastatingly attractive. A sexy, dangerous smile played on his lips as he closed the distance between them. "Of course I'll take you home, Clara," he whispered softly. Before she could process how close he had gotten, Julian leaned in and gently pressed his lips to hers. For a split second, caught off guard by the sudden intimacy and the echo of old memories, Clara didn't move. That single second was all it took. Kaelen turned the corner of the hallway just in time to see Julian holding Clara in his arms, their lips pressed together in the quiet shadows. A cold, agonizing sensation tore through Kaelen's chest. His blood ran cold, replacing his rage with a hollow, brutal emptiness. Clara gasped, suddenly coming to her senses, and shoved Julian back hard. "Julian, stop!" As she stumbled back, her eyes caught a shadow moving near the end of the hall. Her heart plummeted into her stomach. Standing right there, his eyes dark with absolute betrayal, was Kaelen. "Kaelen!" Clara cried out, her voice cracking with terror. "It—it's not what it looks like!" She stepped forward to explain, but Kaelen didn't stay to hear a single word. He turned on his heel, his face an unreadable mask of cold stone, and walked away into the crowd. "Kaelen! Kaelen, please wait!" Clara yelled, running down the hall after him, her heels clicking violently against the floor. Near the main exit, Sienna saw Kaelen striding out with a dark, terrifying aura radiating around him. A cruel, satisfied smile flashed across her face as she hurried to match his pace, slipping her arm through his as they walked out to his car together and drove away into the dark. Clara burst through the main doors out into the cool night air, but all she saw were the red taillights of Kaelen's car disappearing past the gates. She stood alone on the pavement, tears finally stinging her eyes. She was furious at Julian, furious at Sienna, and furious at herself. But most of all, she was heartbroken that Kaelen hadn't even given her a chance to speak. Deep down, a cold, heavy truth settled into her soul—no matter how much she wanted to explain, she knew that seeing another man's lips on hers was something no excuse could ever easily erase.
