Chapter 2: The Dark King's Awakening The harsh morning light cut through the dense canopy, forcing my eyes open with an agonizing throb. My body ached in places I didn’t know existed, tingling with the residual heat of a wildness I could barely comprehend. Shifting on the bed of thick furs, I turned my head, expecting to see Julian's golden hair. My breath caught. The man sleeping beside me was a giant. His bronzed skin was mapped with thick, jagged battle scars, and his jawline was sharp enough to cut glass. He possessed midnight-black hair and an aura of pure, unadulterated power that made my inner wolf want to curl up and submit. This wasn't Julian. This was Kaelen. The exiled Lycan Alpha. Julian’s monstrous older brother, a beast of legend who commanded the rogue packs of the shadows. Kaelen’s eyes snapped open not amber, but a pitch-black abyss swirling with dominant silver rings. A slow, wicked smirk spread across his lips as his gaze drifted to my swollen mouth and the faint bruises his grip had left on my hips. "You're awake, little bird," Kaelen purred, his deep, gravelly baritone sending a shiver of pure electricity straight to my core. He reached out, his massive hand wrapping firmly around my throat not to choke me, but to pin me gently to the furs. "You called me by my brother's name last night. But your body knew exactly who was stretching you apart." I trembled under his touch, horrified by how intensely my body reacted to his proximity. "This... this was a mistake. I have to go." Kaelen leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. "There are no mistakes with a Lycan, Clara. I tasted your blood. You're mine now. Run back to your little prince if you want. But you’ll never forget the way you screamed for me." Somehow, I gathered my shredded clothes and fled his hidden cabin, stumbling back to the Silver Moon territory in a daze of guilt and illicit pleasure. But the nightmare was only beginning. Clara's POV On my way home, my phone buzzed. It was a text from my mom, asking me to meet her at an unfamiliar estate, with the address attached. When I arrived, I found my mother, Sophia, waiting in the grand, high-ceilinged parlor. Beside her stood Alpha Marcus Silvercrest, the reigning Alpha of the Silver Moon and Julian and Kaelen's father. "Clara, thank the goddess you're back," my mother said, her voice tight with a strange, nervous energy. "Sit down. We have an announcement." Alpha Marcus stepped forward, a rare, warm smile softening his grave expression as he looked at my mother. "Sophia and I have decided to unite our families. We are getting married because we love each other deeply. And Kaelen has been recalled from exile to co-lead the pack alongside Julian." "And now, I want you to meet my sons." He raised his voice, calling them into the room. "Julian! Kaelen!" I froze. My blood ran entirely cold. Is this what my mother calls a new family? My high-school crush who had just shattered my heart, and the savage Lycan who had claimed me in his hideout only hours ago... I was supposed to live with both of them under the same roof? As my stepbrothers? Before I could even process the horror, the heavy front doors swept open. Julian walked in first, his golden hair slightly disheveled. But right behind him, exuding a terrifying, quiet dominance in a sleek dark suit, was Kaelen. Our eyes locked, and my breath hitched. Kaelen’s smirk was barely visible, but his pitch-black eyes held me captive, promising a lifetime of delicious, wicked ruin. "These are your brothers, Clara," Alpha Marcus said, pointing to the two men. "This is Julian, my younger son. And this is Kaelen, my oldest." I forced myself to nod in response, my heart hammering against my ribs. I liked the fact that we all stood there pretending as if we had never met before. No one said a word. The silence in the room was a loaded gun. "Julian, lead your sister to her room," Alpha Marcus commanded. Overwhelmed and desperate to escape the suffocating tension, I turned to bolt toward the stairs, needing to reach the safety of my room. But as I reached the first-floor landing, a hand clamped brutally around my wrist. Julian dragged me back into the shadow of the corridor, his eyes searching my face with a sudden, desperate possessiveness. He could smell the change in my scent; his wolf was registering the intruder. "Clara, we need to talk," he hissed, his grip bruising. "The betrothal to Ella was just a joke. It meant nothing. I still want you." "Let me go, Julian," I whispered, trying to wrench my arm free. Before he could pull me closer, a heavy, suffocating pressure flooded the hallway. Kaelen stepped between us, his massive frame completely eclipsing his younger brother. With a casual, terrifying display of ownership, Kaelen wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling my back flush against his hard chest. His hand rested dangerously low on my hip, right over the bruises he’d left hours before. Julian’s eyes widened, his wolf growling at the challenge. "Get your hands off her, Kaelen. She’s mine." Kaelen leaned down, deliberately pressing a slow, heavy kiss right against my jawline. He licked the sensitive skin beneath my ear, making me let out a soft, helpless gasp that both brothers heard perfectly. "She was yours, little brother," Kaelen whispered, his dark eyes flashing with lethal amusement as his grip on my waist tightened. "Before I mark her. But now she is mine. And the shadows don't give back what they catch."
