Point of View:
Tyler Baile
“Did you get it?” Anastasia whispered when we had a moment alone together.
“Yeah,” I whispered as I handed her the moonstone.
“What were you thinking!” Justin barked as he barged into the room. I jumped and dropped the moonstone onto the ground. Justin, Anastasia and I watched it hit the ground. “What is that?”
“Nothing,” I said quickly as Anastasia picked it up and sprinted out of my room at vampire speed.
“Really Ty I thought you knew you could trust me.”
“It’s not like that. I do trust you but this needs more than that.” I said looking at him. He took a sharp breath and stared me down. “I barely know anything about you and you want me to trust you right off the bat? Why because you talk to me after school?”
“Then get to know me.”
“I’ve tried but you blow me off.” Justin opened his mouth and then shut it and rubbed the bridge between his eyes and sighed.
“I’m sorry Ty, I am just not that good about that kind of stuff.”
“I know.” I muttered.
“Damn can’t you even accept an apology?”
“I can.” I snapped. We were silent for a moment before I broke our intense stare down. Justin walked over to my bedside and pulled up a chair next to me. He sat there and hung his head in silence as I looked away from him.
“I’m from Montana, or at least that is where I was found.” He started off. “I was found alone on the side of a highway on a full moon by another werewolf and he watched me until dawn came. When were in human form he came to find out I was only six and had been living on my own since I was four. I lived naked for two years hungry and alone.” I let go of my anger and looked to Justin as he gave me his life story. “The man who found me brought me back to his pack in Deadwood, South Dakota. Little did I know but when he did it caused for a new alpha to rise to power.”
“Why,” I asked him.
“I was a turnie, their pack was full of peer-breads. They thought that by taking in a mutt would make them look weak. So when the pack was split in two and a small mini war broke out and the werewolf who found me became alpha and my father. He and his husband Jerry a human did everything right to raise me.”
“Wow.” I said softly.
“That is a little basic information. What to know more?” He asked leaning in close to me.
“Yea.”
“Well…” Justin and I sat in the hospital room listening to his life, growing up with his adopted dads, dealing with the pack, in charge of the first defense for the pack, his college education and everything that brought him here.
“So wait you mean to tell me, you left the luxury of your back in Deadwood South Dakota for a teaching job here because the headmistress caught you in a mall?”
“Yeah, she did.” He laughed.
“That is the weirdest thing I have ever heard off,” I said as I chuckled.
“So are you going to tell me what that thing was you handed to Anastasia?” Justin asked me. My smiled faded and my face grew stiff. “You promised.” Justin said.
“One I didn’t and two I’m afraid that the more people who know the more people will get hurt because of it.” I said looking down at the foot of the bed.
“Just tell me.”
“A moonstone.”
“Wait like the talisman moonstone?” Justin asked standing up. I looked to him and nodded solemnly. “What! Why?”
“People need to be free we have the right to it.” I said sharply.
“You are children. What do you plan on doing with it?” He asked putting his hands on his hip.
“The same thing we did to the Pimelea.” I said before slapping a hand over my mouth.
“What did you do to the Pimelea?”
“Take one guess,” I muttered.
“Jesus Ty. You can get expelled for that or even worse.”
“No, I’ll be executed. I know what I am doing Justin.” I said tossing back the covers. I pushed myself out of the bed and wobbled as I tried to find a balance.
“No you don’t otherwise you wouldn’t risk it.” He said reaching out to steady me.
“You don’t know what it is like to be limited and control,” I snapped at him as I pushed his hands away. He clenched his jaw and stared me down.
“You will stop this before you get caught.”
“Stop me.”
“I will if I have to.” Justin said lowering his voice to a growl.
“Then I’ll do what I have to do.” I growled back.
“I am begging you not to,” Justin softened his voice. I grabbed onto the chair he recently vacated and dug my nails into it.
“I’m tired of being lied to and I am sure the rest of the student body is too. It is time they were given some truth on what is happening to the world outside these walls.” I took a deep breath as my vision started to turn black and white, “I think it is time for you to leave.” I growled. I blinked away the dullness and watched Justin’s facial reactions. “Go!” I yelled picking up the chair and smashed it into pieces.
“Tyler,” Justin said stepping closer to me. I roared at him, literally like an animal. Justin clenched his jaw again and backed away slowly.
“See you round.” He muttered.
“Doubt it.” I whispered. Justin flinched and walked out slamming the door. I sighed in frustration and walked over to my belongings and took out my phone and dialed Anastasia’s number.
“Tyler everything alright?”
“Yeah, what about the moonstone what has Evie found out about it?”
“Well it is like we predicted we are going to need a full moon to do the casting so a week before semesters this should be done. Another thing we have found out from the spell book is we need both a hybrid and a werewolf, a pure bread one. You think Justin would be up for that?” She asked as she fumbled with something on her end.
“No he was a turnie, though if we had Brock back he could perform it. I can start asking around if you’d like?”
“Nah that would be to suspicious, I’ll go through some student files and talk our choice out with the group.”
“Alright. I’m going to check out of here and head home.” I said as pulled out my semi damp jeans.
“No you need to stay there for overnight observation. I agree with Justin that it is too risky to have you back home. You could have some kind of illness.” Evelyn yelled in the background.
“Alright Evie just one night,” I said to her.
“Speaking of Justin again, what did you tell him?”
“The truth.”
“What!”
“He clearly saw it, I just couldn’t lie.”
“Yea you could have. You could have just called it another kind of rock.”
“Don’t worry.”
“No I will!” She shouted. I pulled the phone away from my ear as she ranted. “He could go to the headmistress and that’s it we are done and your neck will be on the chopping block.”
“He won’t, he couldn’t,” I said thinking back to how sweet Justin had always been to me.
“I know he would have you read his outside of school file?”
“No.”
“He has an expunged record, he was in trouble as a teen and was sent to Juvie and then he landed in jail for eight months after beating the crap out of a guy.”
“No he would have told me that.” I said more to myself than her.
“Just keep your eyes open alright?”
“Alright night,” I said ending the call. “Gotta love life,” I muttered as I jumped back into the extremely warm bed. I closed my eyes and dreamt of the fear and panic I experienced in the lake. I woke up to the head nurse shining a flashlight in my eyes.
“Sorry to wake you just checking your vitals.” I rolled my eyes and sat up in the bed.
“I got to go to school,” I said tossing the covers back and snatched up my now dry jeans and slipped into them.
“School has been canceled for a staff meeting.”
“That wasn’t on the student calendar.” I said looking at her before tossing on a sweater.
“You are right but the headmistress called it. Students are apparently causing mischief with some security systems. It was brought to her attention by Professor Thyro I believe.” She said to me.
“Really,” I said as my heart sank. He would betray me, great so not talking to you again. “Thank you but I am heading home,” I said as I hurried out of the room and into the lobby. I found Anastasia signing discharge papers; she smiled happily as she saw me approaching her. “We need to talk now,” I said pulling her outside the hospital.
“What is going on?”
“Justin informed Cast about the talismans being broken.” I said in a hushed tone as we passed people on the way to Laney Hall. “It is only a matter of time until they realize the moonstone is missing and that I was in the hospital from being in the water for too long.”
“Tyler calm down, I took care of that.” She said pulling me into the study of the Hall.
“What do you mean?” I asked her.
“Clayton found you ice cold in the shower unconscious and we brought you in. They won’t even know that you were actually retrieving the moonstone.” Anastasia said to me as we sat in front of the fire.
“Where are we going to hide it? I bet you twenty bucks that they will do sweeps of the rooms.”
“Already taken care of,” She said taking out a pocket knife. She picked at one of the bricks on the fire place and it popped off. She caught the hallow brick and dumped out the moonstone. “They won’t know.” She said as she put it back in place.
“They better not Anastasia cause as shocking as this may be but I do not want to die over something that stupid.” I said raising my hush tone to a loud hiss.
“I know. Just give it a few weeks alright? Focus on you studies and act natural until the full moon.” I nodded and sighed from the frustration.
“Sad thing is no one knows about this,” I muttered.
“Not true.” We spun our heads around and saw Justin standing there holding onto Donavan.
“What are you talking about?” Anastasia asked sweetly.
“The moonstone.” Her fake smile faded and she stood up and crossed her arms.
“Did you rat me out?” I asked Justin.
“No.” He said glaring at me. Anastasia walked up to him and even though he had a good foot on her she looked tougher than he did.
“You rat him out I rat you out to Cast, I know your record.”
“Will you accept my help or not?” He bared his teeth at her.
“What help?” I asked standing up.
“Him.” Justin said pushing Donavan closer to me.
“Don?” I asked him.
“He has the purest genes on campus, you’ll need him for the ritual.” Justin said.
“I’m always here to help.” Donavan smirked.
“You’re okay with that?” Anastasia asked him.
“Yeah what is the worst that can happen,” He said. All three of us looked at him and his smirk faded. “That bad?”
“I just about died, twice, trying to get it.” I said to him.
“You look fine to me.”
“The scars run deep.” I said to him remembering every horrible moment.
“Anyway,” Justin said cutting in, “you cannot do anything during the eclipse next week.”
“Eclipse?” Anastasia asked him.
“Yeah, it’s the lunar eclipse where it turns red.” Donavan commented.
“That would be perfect timing instead of the full moon,” I said, “think about it. It is a special event that happens a few times a year, where a full moon can happen once a month. It would strength the ritual and everything.”
“Do you not listen?” Justin said grabbing my by the shoulders and pulling me close, “They will expect that. Every teacher including me will be out there looking for any student with that stupid stone in their possession.”
“Justin,” I said placing my hand on his chest, “I’ll be careful.” I blushed and coughed to cover my embarrassment, “We all will be careful.”
“I want you to be safe, got it,” He said looking to all of us.
“I’ll pass the word onto Evelyn and Clayton,” Anastasia said.
“Don’t get them involved.”
“We will need them to run interference and back us up.” I told him.
“I agree with them,” Donavan said to me.
“Fine but my goal is to protect you two only,” He said pointing to me and Donavan.
“Thanks,” Anastasia said flatly.
“You are a damn vampire, you can take care of yourself. They are the one risking their own lives, mortal lives, for this stupid thing.” Justin went off on her.
“Hey mom and dad why don’t you guys go up to your rooms and talk this out,” Donavan said cutting them off.
“Excuse me?” Justin asked balling up his fist.
“Stop it,” I said as I poked him in the chest hard. “You want to help you don’t bark orders, you give suggestions and be a team player.” Justin rolled his eyes and was at ease as he listened to me. “Donavan this is going to require a lot of you.” I said walking up to him, “Come with me. You’ll bunk with me and Clay tonight so we can discuss things.” I said grabbing a hold of his hand and led him out of the study.
“I know but hey if someone is messing with my mind I would like to stop it.” He said as he followed me closely. He went to turn off to my floor but I pulled him further up the stairs.
“Don’t ask questions.” I told him as we came to the girl’s floor. I walked down to Evelyn’s room and knocked twice.
“Coming,” Evelyn said from the other side. Seconds later there she stood with the door wide open.
“Hey Ty and Don,” She said stepping back.
“You need to prep him for the ritual, we are moving it to next week.” I said walking in still holding Donavan by the hand.
“What?” Evelyn asked slamming the door shut.
“There is to be a lunar Eclipse next week and it will be the perfect timing to destroy the moonstone and don’t you deny it.” I said as I dug through the journals of spells.
“Tyler, Justin said we can’t,” Donavan said to me.
“Justin knows?” Evelyn asked confused as she took a seat.
“Yea, and Don I don’t care what he said. This crap needs to end now and you and I are going to be the ones to do just that.” I said sitting him down on Anastasia’s bed. “Let this sink in while I get the translated version of the ritual.” I made my way over to Evelyn’s stacks of notebooks.
“It’s the red one.” Evelyn stated as she stared blankly at the wall.
“Evie this for the best. They can help protect us even better than before,” I said plucking the notebook from the stack.
“I know but a heads up would have been wonderful.”
“Hey he just showed up with him,” I said to her as I flipped to the ritual notes.
“So we are just supposed to bend over backwards now?” She asked. “Ty?”
“They’re gone.” I said as I looked at the ripped edges.
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“The directions for the ritual are missing.” I said showing her the notebook.
“What!”
“You mean these?” Justin asked from the doorway. I turned and saw him holding up the book with the spells, and Evelyn’s notes.
“Give them here.” I demanded.
“No,” He said firmly.
“Justin,” I said walking up to him. “Please give them.”
“No,” He said slowly.
“Damn it Justin this is not what I meant by a team player.” I said to him as I tried to reach for the papers.
“You didn’t tell me that,” He said pointing to the notes.
“You didn’t need to know.” I said closing the door behind him.
“Tyler as a team player I should be informed.”
“Justin Drop IT!”
“Tyler I will not let you sacrifice yourself!” He roared in the closed room.
“WHAT!” Donavan exclaimed.
“I told you that you didn’t know what this costs.” I said over my shoulder to Donavan.
“You can’t go through with this.”
“I don’t have to anymore,” I said to him stopping them all in their tracks, “if we didn’t have a pure bread werewolf I would have needed to sacrifice myself. But now,” I said snatching the notes out of his hands. “I just have to ingest the moonstone power, and that’s that. Donavan has the hardest part. He needs to willing change and feed off of me then I will be able to reverse the curse on the moonstone.”
“I have to feed off of you?” Donavan said softly looking at me.
“Yes. It’s is going to be okay, I’ve been bleeding like the entire time I’ve come here, I think I can bleed one more time.” I said to him trying to reassure Donavan.
“And you’re okay with this?” Justin asked me as he gently laid his hand on my shoulder. I sighed and thought of how I wish I could just turn around and kiss him so he’d shut up.
“I was willing to die for free will once, what makes you think I won’t do it a second time?” I asked as I dispersed the thought.
“Very well,” He said almost intimately, “but you will not do it next week is that understood. I mean it Tyler if you go behind my back and do it I will not treat you the way I have been.” He said firmly.
“Yes, I understand.” I also am willing to make that sacrifice I ‘forgot’ to add.
“Very well then I’m off. Get Donavan prepare for the ritual.” We nodded and he left us alone in the room.
“Okay we have no time,” I said as I ignored everything that had just happened.
