Asteria's POV
My pulse raced, the sound of my heartbeat thrashing in my ears. Beheaded for my sister's crime?
I shook my head, blurting out an apology, but the Alpha flinged me away like a used rag.
I scrambled to my feets, trying to catch my breath as my gaze lingered on the Alpha. He slowly walked towards his throne, “take her to the dungeons. She's going to be beheaded by noon tomorrow.” he ordered coldly.
I ran towards my father, crying profusely like my life depended on it, but he simply kicked me away, his gaze cold and aloof.
"Alpha Leonard.” He began, rising up slowly, “I should have known you wouldn't want her. My daughter, Anastasia, is down with an illness and I wouldn't want to keep you without a Luna for long.”
“Is that why you brought a useless piece for me? A worthless Luna? She can't shift!” He snapped, tearing a piece of my heart away, “where's the dignity of a wolf when she can't shift?”
My father sighed, bowing his head in apology, “I apologize, Alpha Leonard. Allow me to take her home with me. I'd give her more scars, more whips, lessons she'll never forget.”
“I want her dead!”
“I'll torture her better.” My father added, “I'll return the ransom you've given me and the few men sent to guide our pack. I'll take her with me and train her.”
“Then leave!” Alpha Leonard snapped, “leave now before I change my mind.”
Without waiting for anyone to show us to the door, my father dragged me out of the pack house, almost crushing my bones. As soon as we got outside, he wrapped his hands around my hair and smacked my face, “How dare you?!”
I staggered, feeling a pang of pain in my chest, “father.”
He pushed me into the carriage, “were you meant to blurt out the truth? You could have said you weren't fairing well! Do you know how much I've lost already? I could have left you to die there!”
“Then you should have!” I snapped, crying out loud, “dying there is better than being mistreated in this manner, father.” I sniffed, wiping my tears harshly, “I want to be loved too.”
“Then be like your sister!” he snapped, glaring hard at me, “You've never done anything right.”
And perhaps I never will.
Once again, throughout the bumpy ride, I didn't utter a word.
I kept staring at the road, the rolling wheels and how deserted and desolate the streets were.
While we arrived at the Mundane pack, people had not expected to see me with my father.
My mother rushed towards us, holding my father's arms as she blurted out, “Maverick, why is she back? Where are the pack warriors and everything Alpha Leonard promised us?”
My father shifted his gaze towards me, “she ruined it all.” He sighed, running his hands through his hair, “she told them she couldn't shift.”
My mother took a few steps backwards, placing her palm over her chest as her face paled. She stretched her hands, pointing at me, “you bastard! Do you always have to bring misfortune upon us?!”
I lowered my head, remaining quiet as my mother ranted.
“Pack members are dying, our population is reducing, but due to your selfish interests, you've brought doom upon us all! I can't believe my womb was destroyed because of this useless thing!”
My hands trembled as I raised my head to stare at her, “Your womb was destroyed?”
“Of course you had no idea because I hid it for nineteen years! I can't birth your father an heir because of you!” She snapped, her eyes reddening as tears slipped down her cheeks, “but you still turned out as a failure. I really shouldn't have given birth to you!”
“That's okay, Lily.” My father wrapped his arms around her, leading her inside with the rest of the pack members.
I stood there, my vision blurry, my whole world crumbling before me. I stared at the green grass beneath my shoes and trembled, falling to the ground as a heart wrenching cry escaped my lips.
My mother just blurted out the reason she'd hated me for years.
She just blurted out the reason she wouldn't hold me in her arms. She saw me as a curse, a big bag of misfortune. I wrapped my arms around myself and cried harder, wondering why I didn't die immediately I was born.
At the same time, a young boy ran towards me, startling me with the sword in his hands, “there's a rogue attack at the pack border. They're heading here! Where's the Alpha?”
I wiped my tears harshly and dashed inside, searching briskly for my father. I sighted him sitting near the fireplace, “Father, there's a rogue attack.”
His neck snapped towards me as he immediately transformed into his wolf form, “make sure your mother and sister are safe.”
Sometimes I wondered why it wasn't the other way around.
While I searched hastily for my sister amidst the chaos, I was stunned to hear moans coming from our bedroom.
I pushed the door open, finding her beneath a young man. I weaved my hands through my hair, letting out a soft sigh, “there's a rogue attack.”
“You're back?” She smirked, pulling the blanket over her chest as she pulled out her sword, “You don't seem to know your place.” She walked towards me and placed the sword on my palms, “Since dad had instructed you to protect me, stand guard at the door.”
My eyes stunged, my gaze landing on the silver blade, “shouldn't you be fighting?”
“Why fight when I have you to blame?” She smirked, taking slow strides towards the young man before she kissed him again.
In a fit of anger, I slammed the door hard and stood outside, guarding the door like I'd been instructed. Yells pierced the air, followed by wails and screams.
From the side of the high window, I could see the troop of rouges slaughtering everyone in their sight. My eyes wavered as my father fought relentlessly, protecting his home with his own life.
Rouge attacks like these weren't uncommon.
The rogue king had continued assaulting our pack, sending his troops until we would surrender our entire land to him but my father wouldn't.
I tightened my grip on the sword, watching each corner carefully and even after standing for hours, no rouge came upstairs.
Anastasia walked out the door, giggling as she wrapped a robe around herself, “you're still here?” she asked, throwing me a mocking glance, “the war is over, but I guess you've been carried away.”
I bit my lips and dropped the sword to the ground.
I ran down the stairs, eager to know what the rouges had destroyed this time, but I was stunned to find my father walking through the door with my mother in his arms—brutally injured.
He hastily placed her on the soft couch, “where's the pack doctor?! The Luna is bleeding!”
I dashed towards him, worried, but my father pushed me aside, turning to Anastasia, “She doesn't have much time. Hurry, get the pack doctor.”
