Chapter Eight:The Breaking Point

638 Words
Aria didn’t sleep that night. She stared at the ceiling, replaying his words like a broken tape—“Once I do, I won’t be able to stop.” What was she doing? What was she risking? And more importantly, why did she feel like she’d already lost something she never had? By morning, her chest ached with the weight of unsaid things. --- At breakfast, her father was waiting. “Sit,” he said, before she even reached the table. She dropped into the seat across from him in the faculty dining hall. A place where emotions were supposed to be kept in check—served beside black coffee and dry toast. “I received a message,” Dean Monroe said calmly. “From a board member’s daughter.” Aria stiffened. “She mentioned seeing you with Zane Rivers.” Her heart thundered. “I told you to stay away from him.” “It was for a project.” “It’s done,” he snapped. “The project is complete. There is no reason for continued contact.” “Dad—” “I’ve seen this before,” he said. “Students who believe they can rewrite the rules. Who think emotion matters more than achievement.” She blinked rapidly. “You’re talking about Mom.” He fell silent. For the first time in a long while, his mask cracked—just a hairline fracture. “She left because of you,” Aria whispered. “No,” he said. “She left because love makes people forget who they are.” He stood and pushed the chair in. “Don’t make the same mistake.” --- ✦ That afternoon, Zane got called into the Dean’s office. He’d been through disciplinary talks before, but this was different. Dean Monroe didn’t sit behind his desk. He stood beside the window, arms crossed like he was studying a flaw in the glass. “Zane Rivers,” he said, voice cold. “I reviewed your academic file. One more behavioral warning and your scholarship is at risk.” Zane stayed still. “I haven’t done anything wrong.” “You’ve been seen with my daughter. Late at night. Off school grounds. That violates university image protocols.” Zane’s fists clenched. “We were working.” “Were,” the Dean corrected. “It ends now.” And just like that—without a single threat, without a single raised voice—Zane’s entire foundation shook. “She’s not your property,” Zane said, too quiet. Dean Monroe finally turned. “She’s my responsibility. And I won’t let someone with a history like yours drag her into a future she doesn’t deserve.” Zane stared him down. But when he walked out of that office, he didn’t feel strong. He felt exactly like what they all saw him as. Replaceable. Dangerous. Disposable. --- ✦ That night, Aria waited at the old art building. She waited. And waited. But Zane never came. --- ✦ Instead, she found Bella in their dorm room, sitting on her bed with wide eyes and a phone screen glowing. “You need to see this,” she said. It was a post on the campus gossip board — “Cressmont Confessions.” A blurry photo of Aria and Zane near the student center. Late at night. Too close. Too familiar. Caption: Guess the golden girl likes her love dirty and dangerous. Aria’s face turned white. Bella looked at her. “This is getting out of control.” “Who posted it?” “No one knows. It’s anonymous.” Aria sat down slowly. “My father saw this already. I know he did.” Bella hesitated. “Zane… might’ve gotten pulled into a meeting.” Aria’s heart cracked. This wasn’t about feelings anymore. It was about survival.
