It didn’t take long for Maya to wrap up the case. Once he’d been busted, Jeff Durham was eager to share that he’d been enraged by the way Katerina was pulling away from him. He blamed Toni for Katerina’s new self-defense skills, her new job, and her growing independence in general. He’d been on the boardwalk after eating dinner at Captain Crabbie’s when he’d spotted Toni. He’d lashed out with no purpose other than to bring her down.
It was such a relief for Toni to know that she didn’t have to watch her back anymore. She could jog down the boardwalk without looking over her shoulder. She could train for the Midnight Run in peace. Thank goodness, since the race was only two weeks away.
