The Bond Mark

Ayla didn’t mean to lean into his touch. But the moment Kael’s fingers brushed her bare shoulder, her body betrayed her. A shiver raced down her spine — not from fear, not even from desire — but from recognition. Something ancient stirred beneath her skin. Her wolf whimpered. It had always been like this with him. “You shouldn’t be here,” she whispered again, voice hoarse with unshed tears. “I didn’t come to cause problems.” His hand fell away slowly. “I came because I couldn’t stop dreaming about you. About—” “Don’t.” She turned sharply, her silver eyes narrowing. “Don’t say her name. Don’t say her face. Don’t even say you wondered.” Kael swallowed. “She’s mine too, isn’t she?” Silence. Ayla looked away, gripping the cold marble of the balcony rail like it could keep her grounded. “I don’t know what you want from me, Kael. You left. You didn’t fight for me. And then Darian—” “Darian mated you out of spite,” Kael snapped, voice sharp with rage. “He sealed a bond with you not because he loved you, but because he could. And I let him. That’s on me.” His voice broke on the last word. “I never stopped loving you,” he said, softer now. Ayla’s heart pounded. “You think love undoes the bond mark on my neck?” Kael stepped forward, so close she had to tilt her chin up. “The bond mark is ink. What I feel for you is in my bones.” Her breath hitched. The bond mark. A jagged crescent burned into her nape during the full moon ceremony—a physical sign of Darian’s claim. The moment the bite sealed, the pain had been unbearable. But worse than the pain was the moment her wolf whimpered, curling up inside her like it had been broken. A forced mate bond didn’t just cage her body. It caged her soul. “I am his,” she whispered. Kael leaned closer, brushing his lips near her ear. “Not all of you.” Behind them, hidden in the shadows, a pair of golden eyes gleamed. Darian had always trusted his instincts. And his instincts had led him to the balcony moments after Ayla disappeared from the gathering. He stood in the shadows of the hallway, fists clenched, rage boiling behind his calm facade. > Kael still wanted her. Maybe never stopped. > Ayla still responded to him. His wolf snarled beneath his skin. Darian’s pride was legendary, but so was his cruelty. He didn’t mind sharing his Luna's body — he’d suggested an open relationship, after all. But her heart? Her soul? > That was war. --- Ayla moved away first. “I need to go back. People will notice.” Kael didn’t try to stop her, though his hand twitched like he wanted to. “Will you let me see her?” Ayla turned back to him. “She doesn’t know you. She only knows silence where your name should have been.” Kael’s throat tightened. “Let me fix that.” “I’ll think about it.” Then she left. Kael stayed behind, staring at the moon and feeling like the boy he used to be had just been gutted. The Omega. The outcast. The second son. The lover who always arrived too late. --- Back inside the manor, Ayla didn’t make it far. Darian was waiting. She didn’t see him until she turned the corner and slammed into his chest. His hands caught her arms—too fast, too tight. “Enjoy your conversation?” he asked, voice low and deadly. Her eyes widened. “You were listening.” “I heard enough.” Ayla struggled to pull away, but he didn’t let go. “Tell me something,” he said, eyes gleaming. “Does your wolf still whine for him?” She flinched. His grip tightened. “I marked you. I claimed you under the moon. You are mine, Ayla.” “You forced the bond,” she hissed. “You took what he didn’t get to fight for.” Darian’s eyes darkened. “And what if I break it?” Her heart dropped. “You can’t.” “No?” he said, his mouth dangerously close to her neck. “Not even if I mark another?” She went still. That was a threat. In their world, mating another could weaken or sever a false bond. But it also meant war. Public shame. Emotional collapse. “You wouldn’t,” she whispered. Darian’s smile was venom. “Watch me.” Then he released her, brushing past like she was nothing more than a passing shadow. Ayla pressed a hand to her chest, trying to slow her pulse. > He’s unraveling. > And he’s going to take her down with him. --- That night, Ayla returned to her chambers and locked the door. She knelt by her daughter’s cradle, watching the tiny chest rise and fall in peaceful sleep. She looked like him. Kael. The same dark lashes. The same high cheekbones. The same quiet fire in her aura. The child was barely one, but Ayla already feared for her. > What kind of father threatens to mark another just to make a point? Darian hadn’t touched the child in weeks. And now Kael knew. Things were going to spiral. Fast. She sat on the bed and let herself cry for the first time in months. Not because of the pain — she’d gotten used to that — but because she had felt something on that balcony. Hope. Hope was dangerous. Hope could get people killed. --- Elsewhere in the manor, Kael was pacing. He couldn’t sleep. Seeing her again had reopened wounds he thought he’d buried long ago. But worse than that was seeing the mark. The Alpha’s bond. It burned in his memory like a brand. > She was his. She was never meant to be. But Kael didn’t believe that. There had to be a way to break the bond. > Or break the Alpha. His wolf growled at the thought. Kael had walked away from power. From the Silverfang legacy. But if protecting Ayla—and the child—meant stepping back into the shadows of war, he would do it. And he wouldn’t lose this time. --- Darian stood on the edge of the training grounds as dawn crept over the horizon. The Beta approached him. “The Elders are asking about the rogue reports.” “I’ll handle it,” Darian muttered, eyes locked on the treeline. “And your brother?” Darian’s lip curled. “Let him play hero. The girl will see what kind of man he really is.” The Beta hesitated. “And the Luna?” Darian turned to him slowly. “She belongs to me.” “And if she doesn’t want to?” He smiled, cold and deadly. “Then I’ll break her until she does.”
