I had no idea where I was headed, but I was just walking. I definitely earned a couple of stares from the pack members who saw me, but I didn’t care; I was angry, and I was angry that I felt anger about the situation. It’s so crazy that it made no sense.
I swear it wasn’t minutes ago, but it felt like, as I walked out of the dining hall, the anger had suddenly descended on me. I knew why I was angry, but I did not want to admit it. This was all the mate bond's fault; this was all the fault of the moon goddess for making me feel this way. Why was she not trying to help me? Why was she supporting such evil? Why was I feeling jealous that Damien had been involved with a woman? Was this woman prettier than me? Or was he doing all this? Was this a sick plan of his? And was I successfully falling into it?
“Argh!” I screamed out in frustration. I ran my fingers through my hair aggressively. I wanted to cry. Why did life have to be so different and difficult for me? I was sure that there was no other girl my age who would have to kill their mate, and then there was me—maybe I was cursed.
It hurt, and it hurt badly. I clutched my chest, as though I couldn’t breathe. The air suddenly got thicker; I had never felt like this before. What was happening to me? My parents would be disappointed in me. My aunt would be as well, even my brother; when he got older and realized the truth, if I failed to fulfill my duty, he would equally be disappointed in me. I was beginning to become disappointed in myself.
For crying out loud, he was in my room yesterday and even today. Why did I not just attack him? “You are not strong enough,” my brain reminded me. Yes, I wasn’t, but wouldn’t it be better dying while trying rather than letting that monster breathe another day of air so close to me?
A tear dropped on my cheek, and I violently wiped it away. I couldn’t afford to be weak now. I had to be strong; I couldn’t—
“Hey,” I heard his voice from behind me. His hand was on my shoulder, and instantly I felt something like electricity flow through me; it felt really good. He spun me around, making me face him. Goodness, he is gorgeous! My thoughts screamed. I almost choked. Why would I even think that? He is the enemy! He is the enemy! I chanted in my head. Help me, goddess, I desperately pleaded.
“What are you doing here? Did you follow me?” I asked, regaining myself. I stepped away from his hold, creating some distance between us. Maybe the distance would help; sadly, it didn’t. Three feet could do nothing.
Damien stepped closer, making it two feet between us. The bond somehow felt stronger. Does he even feel what I feel? He is an alpha; yes, he is stronger and has better control of his emotions, but alphas are also known to easily rage when their emotions get to them.
I searched his eyes for even the slightest indication, but the only thing I could see was guilt, just like in the pack halls. Where is the ruthless Alpha of the North we all know? The one I should be cowering before; he was known for his dominance. The man in front of me was not weak; I could feel it. It was like he was holding his alpha essence back a lot. But why?
“I need to talk to you about Raina,” he voiced.
“I do not need to know that; that is your business, Alpha,” I responded. He seemed taken aback by my response.
“You do not have to call me Alpha,” he said, gritting his teeth. His expression told me he was displeased that I called him that. I had no idea why I even did; funny enough, I don’t remember when I had to call him by his name. We had only known each other for two days. Two tormenting days.
“But that is what you are,” I pointed out, c*****g my head to the side.
“But not to you,” he breathed. “Is this about Raina? I did not mean to hurt you,” he added.
I blinked, completely stunned. He does not mean to hurt me? Now I want to laugh; he does not know that he already has.
“That’s your business,” I said dryly. I can’t deal with this right now. Yes, I had a plan; I wanted him to love me irrevocably for my plan to work, but maybe, just maybe, I will hold off my plans for today. I prepared to walk away, but Damien did something that surprised me next.
“No, it’s not!” He growled, and the next thing, he grabbed me and crashed his lips on mine. Just like that, I felt like I was melting away with intense desire. He grabbed the back of my head, and I did not realize when I responded to the kiss. The kiss was so intense, like we were diving into each other’s souls, and somehow I wanted him to. I wanted him all around me.
“Betrayer!” A loud voice screamed in my ears, and just like that, I pushed him away. What have I done?
I instantly wanted to cry; my breathing was ragged. Damien looked disappointed by my actions, but he can’t possibly feel worse than I was feeling. I almost literally succumbed to the hands of my enemy because of pleasure.
“Mia,” my name rolled off his mouth so sensually that I almost lost it again. Damn this bond! I cursed internally. Maybe if I had been with other men, I might have had better control of these emotions.
“Please don’t,” I said, moving further back.
“I know I said I was going to give you time, but I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea about Raina and me. We—” he began, but I instantly cut him off.
“Not now,” I said and walked away. Thankfully, I did not feel him follow me. How did I not feel him the first time? It’s just been two days, but I was already slacking. He was winning; he was trying to mess with my head. I didn’t care what he had to say. I couldn’t stay and listen. I needed to get as far away from him as possible; I needed to set my head straight.
