Chapter Six- The Mess

"What do you mean she wasn't giving her all yesterday? Clearly, something different happened, and I want to know the full story," Aunt Mary demanded. It was moments like this that reminded me of my mother; they shared the same fierce aura. It felt as if she were the one here defending her child from bullies. Aunt Mary turned to me, her voice strong and confident. "Mia, what happened?" "He said something about my parents, and I flared up," I admitted, my head hanging low as the words tumbled out. It had been years since their deaths, and I should have been handling it better by now, but somehow, I couldn't. I couldn't bring myself to move on. The grief felt like a wound that had refused to heal, and I believed that the only way it would ever close was through avenging their deaths. "Oh, my goodness," Mia gasped softly. "She should have had better control of her anger. What she did was very dangerous; she could have killed him! She shifted to her wolf form halfway, and I had to send more than four guys to hold her down," Landon said sternly. "Really? Four? Wow, Mia, you’ve gotten really good!" Josh complimented out of nowhere. A smile spread across his face, but Aunt Mary smacked him on the arm, and he faked an exaggerated hurt sound. "Mia cannot kill anyone. This is certainly a mistake," Aunt Mary defended. I wished what she said was true—that I couldn't kill anyone—but deep down, I knew I could. The only person I was genuinely interested in killing was Damien. "Of course. Either way, Mia is off the field today, and no practice for her tomorrow as well. That should give her enough time to cool off from whatever she is going through," Landon said, sparing me a quick glance before walking away. In the end, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise; I would use the time to prepare myself for the mate dance ceremony. "Come on, Mia, let's go," Aunt Mary gestured. I was about to follow her when Betty ran up to me. "Mia! Goodness, don’t scare me like that again! But it was good that you gave Caleb such a beating; that should shut him up for a while," she giggled. I chuckled in response. "I’ll come see you after practice. Bye!" she added with a wave. "Bye!" I waved back, and she gave a final nod before walking away. I trailed along with Mary and Josh as we made our way home, walking down the familiar path leading back to the house. "How was your trip, Josh? I’m sorry you had to fix up my mess; I truly apologize for being such a bother." I spoke truthfully. "Not a problem, Mia. It was fun, really! I had so many boring days in the human city; it’s nice to be back and know that things remain as bubbly as ever in the pack. It’s surely good to be back," Josh replied, flashing me a bright smile. Aunt Mary shot both of us a solid glare, clearly not pleased with my behavior. "You know, Josh, we should be scolding her, not acting like she’s the best student in class—because she isn’t," Mary said sternly. "But she kind of did, though! She beat up the best student. Doesn’t that automatically make her the best student now?" Josh responded playfully. That was something I liked about him—his fun and easygoing attitude. "Moreover, Mia is an adult now; she should be able to make her own decisions. Landon didn’t have to call you over like she was a child still needing guidance," he added. "Fine, you’re right on some level. Mia, just be more careful. I don’t want to see you hurt," Mary said as we finally reached the front door of our house. Josh opened the door, and we all stepped inside. "I will try to do better Aunt Mary. I’m sorry you had to be pulled out there to fix my mess, and thank you for having my back," I said with a sincere smile. "I will always have your back, Mia. That’s why I worry for you. You are my blood, and I love you. Just try to handle things better," she replied. "I will, Aunt Mary. Thank you. I’ll be up in my room if you need anything," I said, and she nodded her head. I excused myself from her presence and went straight to my room. I fell onto my bed with a loud thud. I didn’t know if I should be grateful to Caleb or not, but because of him, I now felt like I had a perfect plan. All I needed to do was wait and execute it. I stood up from my bed and went straight to my wardrobe, searching for the dagger. I had never used it since Aunt Mary gave it to me, but now it would finally serve a purpose. I pulled the dagger out from one of the boxes where I stored various items. The dagger was indeed beautiful. It looked antique, and I wondered where Mary had even gotten it from. I should have asked her when she gave it to me. On that day, I had acted as if I didn’t value the gift, still struggling to navigate my new life. I had seen it as just a mere token, but now this dagger had become my prized possession. If it were possible, I would go back to the past and thank her properly. I took the dagger back to my bed and placed it on the covers, staring at it intensely. Very soon, very soon. Vengeance felt tantalizingly close. I would find a way to get close to Damien, pour the wolfsbane when I knew I was near enough so he wouldn’t have the chance to smell it, and then I would drive the knife through his body and watch as life drained from him. I was even giving Damien a gracious death—he hadn’t given mine a gracious death when he brutally murdered my parents. But I was being kind, and this would be the final act of kindness he would receive before he burned in the flames for eternity.
