Chapter 8 — The Alpha’s Restraint

Lucien did not return to his quarters. He did not sleep. The moment he left Evelyn’s room, the air felt too tight in his lungs, as though the keep itself were pressing in on him. He moved through the corridors like a shadow, boots silent against stone, every sense stretched painfully sharp. Her scent followed him. Not the familiar trace he had learned to control over the past days—but something altered. Warmer. Thicker. It threaded through the air like smoke, curling into his chest, sinking its claws into his wolf. Heat. Not his. Hers. Lucien emerged onto the battlements and braced his hands against the cold stone wall, letting the night wind bite into his skin. The forest below stretched endlessly, dark and restless beneath the moonlight. Too bright. The moon hung full and heavy in the sky, its pale glow washing over the trees like judgment. Lucien closed his eyes and drew in a slow breath. Control. His wolf snarled in protest, pacing beneath his skin, muscles coiling with barely contained violence. The instinct was old. Ancient. It recognized her as something rare—something claimed by destiny, whether Lucien wanted it or not. Mine. The word slammed into his thoughts with brutal clarity. Lucien’s jaw clenched. “No,” he murmured aloud. He had spent his life resisting fate. He had rejected the Moon Goddess once already, torn himself free from a prophecy meant to chain him. The pack whispered about it still—the Alpha who defied the moon and lived. He would not bend now. Not for heat. Not for instinct. Not even for her. Yet his body betrayed him, every nerve humming with awareness. He could feel her through the keep, as if distance meant nothing. Each spike of her discomfort echoed inside his chest, pulling tighter, harder. A soft scrape of boots sounded behind him. Lucien didn’t turn. “Report,” he said. The guard stopped several paces back, clearly uneasy. “Alpha… the eastern sentries detected movement near the boundary.” Lucien’s fingers curled into the stone. “Pack?” “No, Alpha.” The guard hesitated. “The scent was… wrong. Cold. Sweet.” Lucien’s eyes snapped open. “Vampires.” “Yes.” The word settled heavily between them, thick with old blood and older wars. Lucien straightened slowly, every instinct sharpening to a blade’s edge. “How close?” he asked. “Close enough to circle the perimeter without triggering alarms,” the guard said. “And close enough to know she’s here.” The stone beneath Lucien’s hands cracked with a faint, sharp sound. Of course they knew. If he could feel her heat like a beacon through stone and iron, predators older than wolves would sense her just as easily. Perhaps more clearly. Perhaps more hungrily. “Double the guards,” Lucien ordered. “Rotate every hour. No one approaches her chambers without my explicit permission.” The guard nodded quickly. “And you, Alpha?” Lucien turned at last. The guard stiffened under the weight of his gaze. “I’ll handle the rest,” Lucien said. The guard bowed deeply and retreated without another word. Lucien remained where he was long after the footsteps faded, staring into the forest. His wolf pressed closer to the surface now, restless and angry. She’s vulnerable, it growled. She’s dangerous, Lucien shot back. Both were true. He exhaled slowly, dragging a hand through his hair. He had known Omegas whose heat drove packs to madness. He had known powerful females who bent Alphas with nothing but presence. Evelyn was neither. She resisted dominance instinctively. She pushed back without understanding how. Her heat didn’t seek submission—it sought balance. And worse— It responded to him. A sharp pull twisted suddenly in his chest. Lucien froze. He felt it then—clear as a physical touch. She had said his name. Not aloud. Not even consciously. It was intent. Raw and unguarded. The bondless space between them snapped tight, the pull vicious enough to steal his breath. His vision blurred for a split second as his wolf surged forward, roaring for release. Lucien’s hands curled into claws before he could stop himself. Stone groaned beneath his grip. “Enough,” he snarled. The word tore from his throat, low and feral. He forced the wolf back, muscles locking as he fought for control. His breathing came harder now, each inhale dragging fire into his lungs. If he went to her— If he crossed that corridor and touched her while she burned— He wouldn’t stop at comfort. He would pin her to the bed, teeth at her throat, instincts screaming for the mark that would end her heat and bind her to him forever. Claim. Protect. Possess. Lucien closed his eyes. Once he marked her, there would be no undoing it. The pack would kneel. The vampires would hunt harder. The witches would whisper her name in spells. She would never be free of the world again. And she would never be free of him. A distant howl rose from the forest—uneasy, questioning. Lucien straightened, decision hardening like steel in his chest. He would protect her. From the pack that watched her too closely. From the vampires already circling. From the destiny clawing at her blood. Even if it meant protecting her from his own wolf. Lucien turned from the battlements and moved back into the keep, his steps heavy with restraint. Far beyond the borders, hidden among the trees, crimson eyes lifted toward the moon. A pale figure smiled, lips stained dark. “She’s awake,” a voice murmured softly. “And the Alpha is already breaking.” The night swallowed the words whole.
