Ella took a shaky step backward, her mind refusing to accept what she was seeing.
“No…” she whispered. “It can’t be you.”
The man’s expression softened slightly, almost like he regretted her fear. “I didn’t want you to remember it this way.”
Jayden stepped forward instantly, placing himself between Ella and the doctor. “What did you do to her?”
The alarms grew louder, echoing through the mansion like a countdown.
The doctor glanced toward the ceiling. “We don’t have much time.”
Ella’s father suddenly spoke, urgency in his voice. “Ella, listen to me. You need to leave this place right now. All of you.”
Jayden looked at him sharply. “Leave? The exits are blocked.”
As if responding to his words, heavy metal doors slammed down over the mansion’s main entrances. The building shook slightly.
Ella grabbed her head again as more memories surged.
A lab.
White lights.
Her voice crying out for someone named Ryan.
Jayden caught her as she almost collapsed. “Hey—stay with me.”
“I see it,” Ella whispered. “I see everything.”
The doctor took a slow step closer. “Then you understand now. You weren’t supposed to be just a subject. You were supposed to be the bridge.”
Jayden frowned. “Bridge to what?”
The doctor hesitated… then answered.
“To bring Ryan back.”
Ella looked up sharply. “That’s impossible. People don’t come back from the dead.”
The doctor’s eyes darkened. “Not if the procedure works.”
Thunder cracked outside again, shaking the windows.
And suddenly, the lights inside the mansion flickered violently.
A deep mechanical hum filled the walls.
Jayden pulled Ella toward the staircase. “We need another way out.”
But before they could move—
A loud voice echoed through hidden speakers.
“CONTAINMENT COMPLETE. SUBJECT E-1 IS AWAKE.”
Ella froze completely.
Jayden looked at her, alarm rising in his eyes. “What does that mean?”
Ella whispered, barely audible.
“It means… I’m not the only one who woke up tonight.”
